Notes / Commercial Description:
Canadian Breakfast Stout (CBS) is the epitome of why we launched the Backstage Series: to bring some of our most sought-after beers, which have been available primarily at the taproom or at a few select events, to a much larger audience.

Canadian Breakfast Stout is an Imperial Stout brewed with a blend of coffees and imported chocolates, then aged in spent bourbon barrels that have most recently been aging pure Michigan maple syrup.

Misc.: 2017 release (no bottled on date); #CraftAdjace

Saw cases of this at Jubilation Wine & Spirts in Albuquerque, N.M. Was excited because the allotment in San Diego sold out on the first day I believe and here there were loads and loads of it. Wasn’t happy with the $23.99 price tag, but it was at 750-ml. bottle and I reasoned with myself that it wasn’t available since Oct. 2011. Also from the same article saw that it was retailing for $24.99, so I guess I got a deal. Online description read, “Canadian Breakfast Stout (CBS) is the epitome of why we launched the Backstage Series: to bring some of our most sought-after beers, which have been available primarily at the taproom or at a few select events, to a much larger audience. Canadian Breakfast Stout is an Imperial Stout brewed with a blend of coffees and imported chocolates, then aged in spent bourbon barrels that have most recently been aging pure Michigan maple syrup.” DAMN!

Poured a pitch black color with two fingers of khaki tan rocky head. Serene setting underneath with no noticeable bubbles. Almost perfect spiderweb foamy lacing. World-class retention. (Sight - 4.75)

Smelled smooth bourbon, char wood, making it smokier than I would have thought, dark candied chocolate, cacao, oak, toffee, black burnt coffee grinds, light vanilla cream and maple syrup at the very end when I pulled away. Got straight maple from the bottle. Wow. What a difference from the glass that it was poured in and the bottle. (Smell - 4.25)

Took a few sips to really appreciate it. In order got oaky bourbon, char wood, candied dark chocolate, cacao, espresso, burnt coffee grinds, lingering maple syrup, burnt brown sugar, vanilla cream, lightly toasted marshmallow, licorice, toffee and roasted barley. (Taste - 4.25)

Full body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth, warming finish, (Feel - 4.75)

Just a terrific beer. Better than KBS for sure, although I still prefer most versions of Tioga-Sequoia to Founders. Hopefully this is the last time I ever purchase/review a #CraftAdjace beer. (Overall - 4.25)

2017 bomber poured cellar temp to a chilled glass stein. Three finger tight mocha head that fades to a light tan top, mocha bottom ring that persists. Nose is smooth balance of bourbon, coffee, maple, maybe some vanilla. First sips follow the nose deliciously. This is my first encounter with this legend, and a very tasty one at that. The area had a surge of availability, so I bought four! Evidently, there are lots to go around, or the hype has faded, but I'm okay with being late to the party. Mouthfeel is heavy, full, lingering perfect balance of the core flavors. Very drinkable at a fast pace, but at $25 a bomber, savor that flavor! Lacing is still clinging to glass top some 20 minutes later. The aftertaste is sweet maple with a vanilla presence. In some ways, the front end reminds me of Prairie Paradise, which I was fortunate to score in my area recently, because some beer connoisseurs tucked away a handful. The sweetness was never cloying, unlike some "dessert" beers, but was balancing the dark roasted coffee and bourbon flavors. I didn't really get any prominent chocolate notes on nose or tongue. Does wanting only great beer like this make me a snob? I'm okay with that. I'll keep advocating (see what I did there?) for my friends to put down those sad, pale glasses of swill!
