Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.60%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Canadian Breakfast Stout (CBS) is the epitome of why we launched the Backstage Series: to bring some of our most sought-after beers, which have been available primarily at the taproom or at a few select events, to a much larger audience.

Canadian Breakfast Stout is an Imperial Stout brewed with a blend of coffees and imported chocolates, then aged in spent bourbon barrels that have most recently been aging pure Michigan maple syrup.

Had two glasses of this at a tapping. Tasted pretty good at first but half way through that maple syrup was just overwhelming and covered most every other character it may have had. 100 points, naaaa I don't think so. That's just the rarity talking. I felt I could have taken a KBS or even a Breakfast Stout and poured in half a shot of real maple syrup and come pretty close to it's flavor. BC is head and shoulders better.

It's a shame that this beer rarely sees the light of day. Much better than KBS in my humble opinion (CBS hid the booze better). Beautiful aromas of maple and chocolate and a mild peaty-ness. Tastes like a true Imperial Stout should. Creamy richness with mild maple and coffee notes. Glad to have had this.

A hot syrupy sugar bomb. Where's the bacon?? I'm a smoke beer fiend and this one was totally lacking. There was no nuance or complexity. I'd happily pour this on a waffle, though.

Finally. Last keg in the region. Tapped march 2017, from 2015 release. We had an official countdown from Founders.

Midnight syrup black with almost no head.

Not much on the nose, could be my environment getting in the way. Some maple syrup and cocoa. As it warms I'm getting more of a nose. Sweet bourbon. Light nail polish. Scores adjusted.

Oh shit. This is incredible. Huge waves of bourbon, maple, and black licorice just invade the palate leaving syrup and booze behind. To say it's good is an understatement. The alcohol grows astringent but not for long as it turns to black jelly bean.

Feel is huge, viscous, thick, syrupy...all the above.

I'm having a 2015 KBS side by side and CBS is to KBS what KBS is to FBS. A killer.
