Notes / Commercial Description:
Canadian Breakfast Stout (CBS) is the epitome of why we launched the Backstage Series: to bring some of our most sought-after beers, which have been available primarily at the taproom or at a few select events, to a much larger audience.

Canadian Breakfast Stout is an Imperial Stout brewed with a blend of coffees and imported chocolates, then aged in spent bourbon barrels that have most recently been aging pure Michigan maple syrup.

Pours midnight black, like motor oil. Smell has notes of maple, coffee and bourbon. The taste is a world class beer, the maple is the straw that stirs the drink, keeps the coffee and bourbon nicely together in harmony. Thick but not overpowering feel. An absolute classic.

Pours black. Bourbon and coffee aroma. Good mouth feel. Silky smooth with plenty of rich taste you'd expect. My only disappointment is the lack of maple aroma and flavor. Maybe just need to let this one age awhile.

2017 Release. Poured into Founders pint glass. It poured nearly ink black with deep mahogany hues when held to the light, and almost two full fingers of lovely, fluffy, mocha-colored head and lacing that dissipated very slowly leaving thick, elegant lacing. The nose featured dark roasted malt, both burnt and freshly-brewed coffee, chocolate, and just a whiff of maple. Surprisingly, I didn't smell the bourbon. I could certainly taste the maple syrup, however. When first sipped it was extremely sweet - but the taste quickly changed to burnt coffee, char, and dark chocolate. Only at the finish did I finally notice the bourbon taste. Initially, it was almost like sipping two distinct beers. As the glass warmed, however, the sweetness became less pronounced and the bourbon more distinct. This stout has a rich, creamy mouth feel with moderate carbonation, and I could really feel the 11.7% ABV. For me, as for many others, CBS has been a whale for years and I was pleased that New Jersey finally received bottles this year. While initially I was a little put off by the sweetness, as the glass warmed the flavors blended really nicely and I now understood why CBS is so highly regarded. It's not the best stout I've ever had (I'd pick Parabola any time) but it's awfully good!

The maple is very mellow. Some booziness but not too much. I get some bourbon and oak. The aroma is kind of muted, still, an excellent beer.

1,000th rated beer calls for something extra special. Three words come to mind with this beer: flavor, balanced, subtle. Just fantastic. It's funny-after the first few drinks, I was wondering what the big deal was, but as I continued, it just seemed to get better and better. Look is dark as can be, nice foam and head retention. Smell is coffee, chocolate, and maple, but not overwhelming, slight hints of barrel there as well. Taste is wow. Just plain wow. So much flavor – chocolate, coffee, maple, all over a robust roasty stout base. It's sweet without being cloying or sticky. A very smooth feel. For a beer at almost 12% ABV, you can hardly tell. There is just a slight hint of slick oiliness that is the only weakness overall. But I admire the contrast of complexity and subtlety so much that I really have to give it fives across the board. One of the best beers I think I've ever had. So glad to try it, and a very worthy 1000th beer to rate.

L: probably the best looking beer I’ve seen. Nice big head with great retention. The head lasts the whole glass. Lacing is amazing.

S: barrel and chocolate. Slight maple. Not as much as I would have hoped on the maple.

T: very chocolate. Fudge like. Maple at the end. Barrel flavor throughout but not very strong.

F: ultra smooth. Super creamy. Clean finish. No complaints.

O: this is a great beer. Lives the hype to me. Probably he only 5 rating on look. I love the full feel and smoothness. Only complaint is not as much maple as I would like.
