Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 12.40%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Previously known as Hand of Doom.

Doom may be impending but that doesn't mean you have to fear it. A collision of worlds, the intense hop character of our Imperial IPA mingles with the warm vanilla and oak notes imparted from the time spent in our favorite bourbon barrels. Like all good things, Doom comes to those who wait.

This is a 12oz bottle.
From the back label: "Bottled On: 04.27.17 1601 6 12.4% ALC/VOL"

Appearance: The body is a medium-dark shade of orange and amber. It has a medium head that is creamy textured and off-white. For a beer that has 12.4% ABV it has amazing retention. The beer has very good clarity.

Aroma: There is a light, woody, barrel aroma. It smells a bit like a watered down bourbon.

Taste: The beer has a lot of barrel flavor. There is a lot of bitterness to the beer and it has a strong charred ash flavor.

Mouthfeel: It has a lot of bitterness. The body is light and loaded with tannin which dries up the palate. Dry finish with a lot of remaining bitterness. The alcohol is hidden very well.

Overall: There wasn't any hop flavor or aroma to the beer; it only contributes to the heavy bitterness in the beer. It is a high alcohol beer with loads of bitterness and a nice bourbon barrel flavor. For such a high alcohol beer it is very well done but it just feels over-engineered without any real benefit. It felt a bit more like a bourbon barrel barleywine than an Imperial IPA. It's not a bad beer so I would still recommend it but I think I would only really recommend it to those who either really like bourbon or those who like barleywines.

I love barrel aged beer. I enjoy DIPAs. This tasted like a combination of that with the likes of a barley wine or strong ale. Not a ground breaking brew, but a solid barrel aged beer. Hop presence perfectly marries the barrel flavor.

22oz bomber poured into a snifter. Smells of citrus, pine, and oak. Very hoppy up front but do get a hint of vanilla and bourbon. Flavors that come out the most are pineapple and citrus. Very interesting taste but not quite sure how I feel about this one.

Description: Golden color, a little darker than apple juice, with minimal head or lacing and a crystal clear appearance. Overall, the smell is a bit muted with bourbon/oak being the most prominent aroma. There's some fruit as well, tropical - maybe mango. You can really smell the booze on this, which isn't surprising. Taste is a little underwhelming. Not as much bourbon as I expected or a typical, hoppy, bitter IPA finish. Feel is like an IPA but a bit thicker and with less carbonation.

Suggested food pairing: Guacamole

If you like this beer than you should also try: Devil Dancer

Overall: 3.75 (This beer is good but I would not likely drink it again) I found this one kind of underwhelming. The idea of a barrel-aged IPA has always seemed a little off to me and I don't know that barrel aging really complements the style. There were some good elements to this but I feel like it got lost somewhere.

Growler into pint glass. Pours a clear amber-gold with a nice off-white head. Great lacing. Initial impression is booze, vanilla, oak, grapefruit, and pepper. Mouthfeel is chewy/sticky. Carbonation is medium. Finish is boozy and slightly bitter-sweet. This is a really good DIPA. A little bite, but that just adds to the effect.
