Doom may be impending but that doesn't mean you have to fear it. A collision of worlds, the intense hop character of our Imperial IPA mingles with the warm vanilla and oak notes imparted from the time spent in our favorite bourbon barrels. Like all good things, Doom comes to those who wait.

Slightly hazy amber orange color with a thick off-white head with great retention and leaving strong laces.
Aroma with predominant notes of mild bourbon, vanilla, oak and lychees.
Flavor is more interesting with notes of chocolate-cocoa, bourbon, lots of spices, especially vanilla, orange marmalade and resin. Dry and bitter aftertaste.
Bordering full body with appropriate carbonation. They have slaved its 12% abv. Well done.
Me like it. Very complex and flavorful with no notes shadowing the recipe. Oak and bourbon are delicate. Almost an American Barley Wine without the dark notes. I felt a lot of cocoa upfront with bourbon and oak on the background.

Pour: yellow-orange with a lots of white head that slowly ebbs leaving a web of lacing as you drink. Really attractive beer.
Aroma: Not a lot of aroma given it’s an imperial IPA and BB aged. Maybe my sniffer is dead tonight!
Taste: hop/malt forward, bourbon, citrus, maybe some vanilla, some honey like sweetness. Reminds me of Hopslam with bourbon on top.
Mouthfeel: really good balance of malty thickness, just enough carbonation to make it an IPA not just a BB aged Stout feel.
This beer grows on me as I drink it. Smooth, hop citrus, bitterness and bourbon are well balanced. Really interesting and surpringlt easy to drink. Highly recommend it.

Pours a deep, dark amber coloration with a medium off-white head leaving a spiderweb of lacing on the glass after a little swirl. Smells predominantly of vanilla and bourbon with a certain. slightly piney citrus aroma overshadowed by all the vanilla and bourbon. Taste follows the nose, the vanilla is strong in this one. There are also notes of citrus, pine, oak, caramel malts and bourbon, with quite a bit of bitterness coming through in the aftertaste. While it hides its ABV quite well, there is a slight, hot boozyness to it. I'm conflicted about this. It's not bad, but I'm really not sure if I want vanilla bourbon notes in my piney citrus DIPA. Does everything really need to aged in barrels? I think I'll stick to stouts for barrel aging and enjoy my DIPAs fresh and fruity.

L - lightly hazy with a three fingers head

S - bourbon, caramel, citrus, pine resin

T - bourbon, orange, grapefruit, herbal bitterness, vanilla, caramel. Very few sweetness compare to the bitterness. Some mineral notes. Orange blossom

M - medium carbonation, a bit sirupy

O - A very nice barrel aged dipa. At 12% it almost flirts with barleywine territory but it's really really not boozy for the abv. I think I'll feel it quite soon

Bottle poured into a Founders Brewing Co snifter

A: Pours deep golden orange amber with a frothy light tan head that settles to a light layer and leaves a some nice lacing.

S: Smells as expected, a big DIPA with a bourbon barrel kicker. Citrus, a little fruit, and spicy pine, noticeable barrel presence, vanilla, oak, mild bourbon, backed with biscuity malt and some caramel and honey sweetness.

T: Happy to report some of the hops have survived their slumber. Citrus, orange and grapefruit, a little spicy pine, some underlying fruity notes, peach and apricot, complimented nicely with barrel character, lots of vanilla, some earthy oak, just a touch of the bourbon, and built on a foundation of crackery malt with some caramel and honey sweetness.

M: Medium to full body, moderate carbonation, slightly creamy smooth, with a just a bit of warmth to remind you of its strength.

O: I'm super curious what the base beer tasted like fresh just to have a reference point of how much this changed in the barrels. That being said it came out quite tasty, maybe leaning a bit towards the English IPA style, but with a little extra kick. Not something I'd necessarily go after again, but a fun one to try.

Looking forward to trying this supposed "oxymoron" of an experiment. Barrel aging an IPA? Blasphemy!!! The hops heads who religiously check on freshness dates and consider a 2 day old IPA drain pour worthy must be shocked beyond belief.
All kidding aside, I'm reviewing this live, with high expectations (because Founders rocks, and an open mind. (Purity of style be damned!)
It pours a copper amber color with a moderate foam head that soon dissipates. A thin ring and a scattering of lacing stick to the glass.
Holding it up to the nose it is instantly apparent that this is aged in bourbon barrels. Besides the bourbon sweetness and alcohol spice, the oak and vanilla also come through. I'm really enjoying this complex nose as the biscuity malt and caramel aromas lure me in with their inviting aromas. Subtle but bold hops aroma also comes through; hints of tobacco, peppery and pine.
Medium to full body with a complex blend of malt, hops and alcohol flavors. As with the aroma, traces of bourbon are instant. A strong combination of boozy sweetness, alcohol spice, vanilla and oak, make this taste like a hard liquor. Yet, the robust hops kick, peppery, put new needle, tobacco and resin, remind us that this is an IPA. Nice alcohol warming and a slight burn, is accompanied by a dry and bitter finish derived from the hops. A rich and chewy malt backbone also adds to the complexity. Caramel sweetness, toasty and biscuity. There are even some fruity and citrusy flavors, as well as the aroma, that come out towards the end. I'm picking up orange peel, grapefruit rind and even some licorice and anise seed like qualities. The alcohol burns all the way to the end. A strong brew indeed but quite easy to put down. I think it was worth it.

This is a huge beer. Left a lasting aftertaste that I wasn’t crazy about. Maybe too much going on. Overall, better than average but not my favorite from Founders.
