I don't even want to ask how the South Philly Taproom managed to get any of this stuff, but I just thank my lucky stars I was able to try it.

The beer pours a rich honey gold color, with OK head retention and lacing. On the nose.... geez loueeze.... now how in the world did founders manage to make a beer that smells like this? The beer has an exotic aroma of sweet mandarin orange with a significant underlying component of hoppy bitterness. There is also some exotic aromas of mango and papaya, giving this beer a gorgeous nose that is nearly off the charts. The flavors on the palate replicate the nose, yet amazingly the beer manages to stay fairly dry on the finish, despite some moderate honey sweetness. The alcohol is incredibly well disguised, and the mouthfeel is no more then medium bodied. This beer is incredibly light on it's feet for such a big beer, though the exotic fruit flavors and the sweetness detract from the drinkability ever so slightly.

Wow! Just incredible stuff from Founders. Bravo! This is quite well done.

What a fortunate mis-pour this one was...friend and I got to drink it for free, and i would definitely have paid anyways! Double trouble is a great ipa to begin with, but this sort of smoothed it out took it from great to excellent for me- the bourbon flavor definitely hits you right up front in taste and smell, middling out with hops and finishing with a pretty sincere malt character. Smooth from front to back, with mellowed out bitterness and nice floral notes. This ones a good one after a freezing cold walk.

This a barrel-aged version of Double Trouble. The barrel aging smooth some of the hop bitterness in a very enjoyable manner. Makes the more resiny notes in the DT settle down and promtes the more floral and smoother hop resins shine through. Barrel aging seems to bring more of the malty sweetness and the depths of the malt to the forfront which IMO seems to make an even more drinkable brew than the original version. Mouthfeel is smooth and as it warms becomes even more enjoyable and easy-going. Kudos to the Founder's folks for continuing their exploration of big beers and spins-offs of their classics.
