KBS - Maple Mackinac FudgeKBS - Maple Mackinac Fudge
Notes: Michigan didn't invent old fashioned fudge, but it was perfected here. We pay tribute to this time-honored tradition with KBS Maple Mackinac Fudge. By amplifying the rich chocolate notes of KBS using Mackinac Fudge coffee, then adding maple syrup and aging it in oak bourbon barrels, we've created a bold new take on our barrel-aged classic - one that could only have originated in Michigan.

KBS stands for "Kentucky Breakfast Stout".

ABV varies by batch.

12 oz bottle, poured into a stout glass at ~40 degrees F and allowed to warm during consumption. Bottle date is October 2020, and I purchased this out of a walk-in cooler at a bottle shop this very weekend.

L: Pours your typical impenetrably dark stout color, and forms a massive, fluffy head of tan foam with excellent retention.

S: Straight up maple fudge. As in almost exactly what one expects to inhale when walking into a fudge shop in the northern US or Canada. I'd honestly be hard-pressed to find any "beer" scent in the nose, per se.

T: Ah, there's the actual beer. While the maple fudge notes are distinct and prominent, the underlying black bread, char, and coffee roll through as well. The barrel notes manifest late in the tasting process, and linger in the aftertaste.

F: Oddly light for KBS, thinner than one might expect.

O: Usually of late, I find myself typing something like "Nice, but I prefer " in reviews like this. This one actually bucks that trend for me. This is tasty stuff.

Really hope they make this again. Coffee, chocolate fudge, vanilla, maple, bourbon - just everything to make KBS even better. Don't skip this one if you see it. Worth every penny.

L: Nearly black. Dark brown, well formed soapy head.
S: Deep and boozy. Fudge, caramel, and maple syrup. Very sweet.
T: Like the nose. Roasty caramel malt and fudge upfront, with hints of bourbon, becoming maple syrup and dark chocolate, finishing with a hint of coffee. The booze is less of a focus and more of a compliment.
F: Wet and smooth. Moderately sticky.
O: Was I surprised? No. Was I satisfied? Yes. This is a delicious stout with some interesting complexity, and fantastically balanced to boot. In fact, that’s my overall take: wonderfully well rounded. It’s not my favorite stout, but what it does it does very very well.

12oz. bottle served in my Spiegelau tulip. Pours the color and clarity of cola with a loose, 1/8th inch, mocha-colored head that disperses towards the edges. Nose expresses aromas of dark fudge and maple candy. Taste consistent with nose with the addition of roasted coffee and char; however, it all comes off a little watered down. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body with a mild, even carbonation. Overall, might be past its prime, but not overly impressed.

Bourbon and fudge. Simple, well crafted and delicious. Founders does it again. I get some toasted coconut on the finish as well leaving me wanting a mounds bar. Definitely worthy of the price of admission.

12 oz bottle, born on 10/26/21, poured into a snifter at 55 degrees F:
L - black tar, with a hazelnut head that largely faded but lingered around the edges of the glass
S - bourbon, fudge
T - this is my second bottle of a fourpack and the fudge has mellowed a bit. Now a nice blend of bourbon, malt, fudge
F - thick mouthfeel with minimal carbonation
O - this beer is getting better with age. Very nice!

12 ounce bottle into a snifter. Bottled 10/14/20, had 6/16/21.

Pours an opaque dark brown, with a one and a half inch foamy head and some foamy lacing. Aromas of fudge, fudge, fudge, coffee, chocolate, malt, some vanilla. Has a sweet aroma. The flavor also starts with fudge- not as much as the aroma, coffee, roasted malt, chocolate, some vanilla, bourbon as it warms, a hint of maple. It’s fairly sweet and there’s some bitterness on the finish, an odd bitterness. Mostly smooth, a very good but slightly thinner full body, well carbonated.

It’s certainly good, with fudge for days- great aroma, but the barrels are pretty light and the maple is a rumor. Not as complex as the OG, and it lacks the overall richness and barrel impact.

Pours pitch black motor oil. One finger tan foam. Dissipates After a swig or two. Smell is chocolatey fudge and raisin, light coffee and roasted malt. Taste follows suit but seems a lot more boozey than original KBS which I rated much higher. There is some vanilla here but not much. Some oak and charcoal flavors. I couldn’t get past the bourbon flavors to distinguish and appreciate the rest. Okay beer but won’t buy again

L - motor oil. Dark as black, but with a brownish hue. Minimal head, but the ring of lacing that's left is crimson tan in color.

S - burst of milk chocolate up front that quickly turns acrid as the milk turns dark and we're left with raw cocoa beans. There's a sweet maple/honey blanket over the whole thing and even some peanut butter richness. By far the most aromatically diverse of the KBS variants.

T - such richness. Wow. Undulating between sweet milk chocolate and roasty bourbon woodsiness. On one side of the coin is vanilla extract, maple candy, and dark cherry fruitiness . On the other is fudgy tanginess and that core KBS barrel acidity. Fantastic contrast.

F - unfortunately thin for this ABV, but still does the trick in delivering a massive dose of chocolatey flavor, so it's pretty hard to complain.

O - KBS jacked up with a heaping helping of decadent sweetness. Hits all the right notes from OG KBS and introduces a bold, but carefully crafted adjunct flavor.

Viscous jet with a finger of sepia froth that doesn’t linger; fresh baked brownies on the nose with hints of bourbon, fig, blueberry and coffee; German chocolate cake, dates, maple cream candy, espresso grounds, cigar smoke and whisky barrel to finish with a bitter, tannic linger; medium to full, chewy, mild heat.

4 4.5 4.25 4.25 4.5

The name says “maple” and “fudge” and that’s what’s doin’ here.
A monster fudge nose - but cakey, not ganache or truffle - leads into a pile of sweet 70% dark chocolate in the body. What’s more impressive is the maple, which is not pure rock candy but more along the lines of butterscotch or coffee candies, maintaining a delicate presence rather than just fermenting out.
What’s not working here (as kovergas says) is the coffee and the barrel. The coffee is there, but plays like an acidic high note rather than a well integrated part. And the barrel just underwhelms: some wood, little bourbon booze, no vanilla.
It’s balanced and nuanced, as are all in this series - these are always a pleasure to drink, and suffer only in comparison to each other.

Better than CBS for smooth maple character, but still doesn’t beat the original KBS.

Pours black with a finger and a half of dense caramel foam. Aroma is maple, syrup, chocolate, fudge, cocoa nibs, toffee, and toasty, toasty malts. Big time and expressive. No booze on the nose. Flavor profile is more of the same - chocolate, fudge, toffee, maple, nuts, and roasty and toasty malts. Booze seeps thru a little more here, offering up a touch of heat at the end. That heat couples up well with char to round out the sweet start. Mouth feel is thick with hearty, velvety texture. Overall, everything from the first look to the texture is great. It's boozy and big without being abusive or mislead.

Regardless of opinion on this brewery socially, to me their dark stuff is so far amazing. The coffee is super background here but the chocolate and bourbon flavor is excellent, maple is subtle as well but I wasn't surprised there. Overall it was a quality product.

This beer makes me marvel at the combination of taste, feel, and smell.

It pours perfectly, it smells heavenly, and the taste is awesome from first touch to the lips to the swallow and retro-hale.

Wow, this is a fantastic beer! Thanks to my wonderful wife for putting this in our anniversary mixed 6 pack. Dark as the deepest corner of the universe, a head that could support the lunar lander, lacing like a Calder, and then you get to smell it, and ultimately put it in your mouth. Bourbon, coffee, chocolate, but not too much of any of the main characters. Beyond the tastes in the foreground are little subtleties rounding out the cast. Fantastic.

Bottled on 10.14.20: Pours pitch black with a 2 finger thick foamy/creamy light brown (sand) colored head, that faded slowly and left good lacing.

Smells of maple syrup, fudge, brownie batter, dark chocolate, molasses, brown sugar, burnt coffee grinds, roasted nuts, chocolate syrup, some earthy tones and oak/barrel accents. Almost seems like spices such as rye come through as it starts to fade.

Wow, this is one of the best “dessert beers” I’ve ever had. It hides the ABV, it’s not too sweet and yet it’s very complicated and makes the best use of all the star ingredients. Like the nose the taste has maple syrup, fudge, brownie batter, dark chocolate, molasses, brown sugar, burnt coffee grinds, roasted nuts, chocolate syrup, earthy tones, oak/barrel accents and then ashy, smoked wood flavors, pine cones, rye, chocolate milk, espresso and bittersweet bakers chocolate. Considering all the chocolate and sugary aspects this is not overly sweet and has enough char and bitterness to balance it. It has the campfire smoked essence, like the grains were almost burnt, which helps completely hide the alcohol. This was a tasty slow sipper with a nice chewy feel.

Poured a 10/14/20 bottle into a North Coast Brewing tulip glass. Solid black with a persistent tan ring of lacing. Smell of maple, vanilla and chocolates. Flavors of maple, bitter chocolate and vanilla (nice contrast), reminds me of Funky Buddha. Full mouthfeel. Hides alcohol well, maybe due to the Mackinac Fudge; nicely done, recommended.

FRom the bottle, it pours a stygian brown/block color, blocking all light transmission, with a modest light brown head that remains and leaves lacing as you enjoy it. The nose is lovingly smothered with scents of maple, chocolate, caramel, almonds and fudge ice cream. In the mouth, it smoothly runs over the tongue leaving behind tastes of bitter chocolate, fudge and a touch of maple syrup. Wow!

Served from the bottle in a Mickey Finn's shaker pint glass.

I like fudge. I like KBS. Let's do this. This stuff pours a lithe obsidian topped by a finger of tan foam. The nose comprises rich chocolate syrup, mild charred barrel, vanilla bean, and a waft of roasted malts. Lovely. The taste tones the chocolate down to add some balancing roast and some coffee; more barrel comes through here, as does an influx of bourbon and a background twinge of maple syrup. The combination is a touch discombobulated, but ultimately it's a rather pleasing mixture. The body is a healthy medium, with a light moderate carbonation and an easy-going feel. Overall, a very tasty stout, potentially one that doesn't quite live up to its stated pedigree, but one that I will never think of turning down. Good times.
