Notes: Borrowing elements from both high-end craft cocktails and moody jazz clubs, Velvet Rush takes the bourbon barrel-aged brown ale up an octave with free-flowing notes of coffee, chocolate and vanilla extract. Milk sugar aids in weaving together this complex tapestry of flavors to create a unique sipping experience that really ties the room together.

Dark chestnut brown with tan head that settles into a thick ring around the glass. The taste is plush vanilla and dark coffee, bourbon barrel whiskey and cherry oak, a bit of sweet lactose, and malt from the base brown beer. Very unusual for a brown ale, but tasty.

Poured from bottle into tulip, good 1 finger tan head good retention and lacing. Clear dark ruby/brown in the glass. Chocolate, vanilla, coffee and slight bourbon wiff on the nose. Taste follows the nose, sweet malt up front, chocolate, vanilla and roasted coffee thru the middle and a dose of bourbon on the finish. Residual bourbon and vanilla on the palate. Super easy drinking, to the point of being dangerous. Finishes on the dry side, but leaves a little sweetness on the palate.

FOUNDERS VELVET RUSH BA BROWN ALE 7/26/22

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Lawson's Willi Becker.'

a: Opaque brown with a red-brown aura at the bottom, thick lacing surrounding an even thin surface foam.

s: Black coffee.

t: Coffee and chocolate with vanilla notes. Some sweetness and light whiskey notes.

m: Lighter side of medium,

o: As a barrel aged brown, a bit disappointing for the domination of coffee. rather than the bourbon flavor we generally expect and desire from a bourbon barrel aged brew. Thus IMO overpriced.

Founders did this style with their Underground Mountain Brown in 2020 and I thought it was pretty good. Velvet Rush attempts to tweak that recipe into a new beer and it falls short.
Coffee concentrate, the vanilla extract comes off as artificial, and there’s not a lot of character that defines this offering as anything unique.
Nice alcohol burn, a tad of Heath toffee candy,.,, I get more oak barrel dryness than a bourbon note at finish.
Certainly doesn’t suck, but it isn’t great either.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Nearly clear medium mahogany pour. 1.5 fingers of foamy white head leave great lacing.

S: Coffee and vanilla mixed with malts/grains.

T.F: Semi-sweet... sugars, coffee, vanilla, and milk chocolate up front. Toffee and more coffee. Some roast for balance... medium bodied and smooth/creamy. Some definite booze, but the 11% is pretty well hidden.

O: If you're in the mood for a semi-sweet coffee/cocoa/vanilla brown ale this should be your go to. It made for a nice change of pace/nightcap. Dangerously drinkable and the ABV will sneak up on you.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a very dark brown with tan head. The nose is amazing. Coffee all the way. After I smell the coffee for a while, I start to get some other notes of milk chocolate, licorice, vanilla, and a hint of dark fruit. Not much barrel coming through on the nose. The taste nicely follows the nose. Coffee is dominant, with nice compliments of chocolate, vanilla, milk, caramel, and a hint of bourbon. Mouthfeel is creamy and thick. Overall, a truly fantastic brown ale.

Poured from 12 ounce bottle into DFH tulip. Bottled on 08.05.21. Dark brown amber body with very light tan moderate sized head. Smell of chocolate, coffee, barrel and malts. Taste mirrors the smell with an overriding sweetness that isn't out of balance and more of a booze presence. Mouthfeel is very smooth as befits a brown ale and not overly thick. Probably dangerously drinkable. Another Founders brown ale success.

12 ounce bottle, bottled on 07.30.21, thanks to Brutaltruth for this brew! Served in a snifter, the beer pours a brown color with not quite an inch tan head that stuck around a while. Good amount of lacing. The brew smells like milk chocolate, coffee, caramel, molasses and vanilla. For the most part the taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also some nutty, dark bread and bourbon flavor noticeable too. Leans sweeter tasting but not close to being overpoweringly so. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's coating and creamy with a moderate amount of carbonation. I thought this was a good overall imperial brown ale, definitely worth a try if you get the chance to!

A 12 fl. oz. bottle, bottled on 5th August 2021, poured into a snifter glass.

Appearance: A clear dark brown colour with an almost one finger beige head that had decent retention and left some nice spotty lacing.

Aroma: Sweet, brown sugar, chocolate, vanilla, milk, caramel, roasty, coffee bean, espresso, oak, with light bourbon notes.

Taste: Moderate to high sweetness with slight bitter notes, caramel, brown sugar, chocolate, vanilla, coffee, bourbon.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation.

Overall: Excellent aroma as the bourbon crept through as it warmed. The flavours were a bit sweet for me though, and didn’t make it as easy to drink as I would have liked.

Served from the bottle in a Boulevard tall tulip.

Pours a deep midnight hickory topped by a finger of khaki foam. The nose comprises sweet coffee, cocoa powder, light maple syrup, light molasses, and a touch of bourbon way in the background. The taste brings in more of the same, along with a twinge of vanilla bean for good measure. The body is a hefty-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a smooth feel. A very tasty bit of brown goodness, indeed.

Appearance: A dark reddish brown body is crowned by a large, somewhat coarse and quite persistent tan head. A fine-beaded and unbroken sheet of lacing adorns the glass wall.

Aroma: The aroma is wonderfully complex, with notes of chocolate syrup, unsweetened cocoa, milk chocolate, toasted malt, sweet coffee, vanilla, brown sugar, and toasted nuts. One thing that seems utterly absent from the aroma is any hint of alcohol, surprising in light of the considerable ABV of eleven point one percent.

Taste: A medley of chocolate flavors present at the opening of the taste. As with the aroma, there is chocolate syrup, bitter cocoa, and milk chocolate. Also notable are brown sugar and vanilla, with hints of wood. Toward the middle of the taste, the alcohol appears. Despite the high ABV, there is a gracious warmth paired with bourbon-like notes. As the taste advances to the close, there is a wave of roasted malt and some toasted nuts. The finish is slightly dry with a lingering, slight burnt note.

Mouth feel: Smooth and full, quite pleasant, with a hint of champagne-like carbonation to add interest.

Drinkability/notes: Velvet Rush is a superb beer for pairing with rich chocolate desserts, or as a dessert, itself. It would also serve well as the last example in a high ABV beer flight.

Presentation: Packaged in a short twelve ounce brown glass bottle, served in a La Fin du Monde tulip. The "Bottled On" date is "07.30.21".

Twenty years ago on this date, 03/20/2022, I joined BeerAdvocate. Cheers!

12 oz bottle with a 30 July 2021 bottling date stamped on the back label.

Appearance. Poured into my Belgian snifter, this displayed a clear, dark reddish-brown body with a good off-white head.

Aroma. Coffee and lots of barrel aging influence are dominate, but these don't mask a generous load of dark grains. Lightly smokey.

Flavor. Tasting brings the flavors expected from the aroma, along with vanilla and cinnamon. The smoke and coffee are both more subtle here than in the aroma.

Mouthfeel. Smooth (especially when further aged to July 2022), full body with well chosen medium-light carbonation and partially hidden ABV.

Looks and Tastes very thin and flat and all that lingers is the flavor of charred wood on the roof of your mouth. Extremely disappointed in this one from Founders.

The pour is a tad murky, reddish brown like mahogany MinWax. The tan head collapses to a nice ring and a raft.

The smell opens with cold brew coffee for me. There is a little chocolate, even less vanilla, slight sweetness like light brown sugar, and hardly any barrel initially. Light bourbon creeps in after a few minutes.

The taste follows, but it is much stronger than the smell. Cold brew coffee, the chocolate plus vanilla plus lactose combo starts to play like milk chocolate, but the initial chocolate taste is more like baking chocolate. The barrel influence seems pretty minimal, but it's there. There's a decent level of bitterness just at the end of the taste. I do not find this to be very sweet, and that is surprising. No indication of the 11-ish percent alcohol.

Feel is fairly light, well carbonated, slightly drying astringency, but pretty smooth and silky. The coffee lingers as does the chocolate. A very mild vanilla sweetness builds in with repeated sips.

Overall, it's a very decent brew. I expected a bit more intensity in the aroma, especially. It's well-balanced and the flavors are quite harmonious, and I would say restrained compared to other flavored Founders offerings

12 oz. bottle. Brown body. Smells of bourbon and chocolate with a dose of vanilla. Tastes of vanilla and chocolate with a dose of bourbon. Oak in the finish with a lingering lactose sweetness. That's about the only sweetness in it, surprisingly, as the description is pretty sugary. But it's pretty drinkable. Pretty good.
