Notes: Borrowing elements from both high-end craft cocktails and moody jazz clubs, Velvet Rush takes the bourbon barrel-aged brown ale up an octave with free-flowing notes of coffee, chocolate and vanilla extract. Milk sugar aids in weaving together this complex tapestry of flavors to create a unique sipping experience that really ties the room together.

Single, twelve ounce bottle copped from Bottle King in Livingston. Pours a light brown mahogany hue with minimal frothing. Ardent aroma replete with nuances of caramel and toffee. Similar overall flavor profile. Good stuff.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a dark coppery amber with a one finger off-white head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of lightly toasted malt, coffee, vanilla, cocoa and light bourbon. Flavor is lightly toasted and dry caramel malt, coffee, bourbon and light vanilla and cocoa. Bourbon and mocha finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. A big brown ale that exhibits all its adjunct flavors in good balance. The bourbon barreling kind of makes this taste like a tamed down strong ale, but that's probably because these flavors are usually in a denser malt ale. As expected, the blend of flavors is nicely done, with authentic coffee and bourbon the clearest notes, but good cocoa and vanilla too. Although I'm a big fan of coffee in porters and stouts, the flavor is sometimes too stark in lighter beers for my palette. I liked this well enough and it is a hefty ale, but probably a one and done for me; if I have to be up all night from caffeine in my beer, I'd rather have a stout. That said, I enjoyed this bottle and appreciated trying this interesting take on a brown ale.

Appearance: Clear brown, ok, fizzy head.

Smell: Nice coffee aroma, mocha, marshmallows.

Taste: Sweet, super creamed coffee. Some wood and vanilla finish it off.

Overall: Was in the mood for some barrel-aged stuff so picked up a 4 pack. Very nice smell, taste is good if a little sweet. The barrel seems to keep it from going too far off the deep end on sweetness.

Medium light carbonation with a slightly watery body. Cloudy murky reddish brown appearance.
Aroma is vanilla, cinnamon, malt, and brown sugar.
Taste is cinnamon, malt, bitter and earthy almost dry bitter finish and malt lingers long in the aftertaste. A slight vanilla creaminess shows up as well.
Overall an above average, flavorful beer

12oz bottle poured into a snifter

A- pours brown in color with a one-finger foamy khaki colored head that has good retention and leaves some lacing behind

S- smells of fresh espresso, very similar to the coffee in KBS Espresso. Undertones of chocolate, vanilla cream, milk sugars, nutty brown malts, caramel, oaky bourbon, maybe a hint of hazelnut

T- nutty brown malts up front are quickly confronted by a big hit of bourbon barrel, adding oak and barrel juice. Mid-palate brings out an herbal fresh coffee note, complimented by undertones of milk chocolate, vanilla and creamy milk sugars. The finish gives more coffee with bourbon on the linger

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that turns slightly creamy info a warming finish

O- a solid BA brown, but not on the same level as Underground Mountain Brown

Pour is a deep brown with a tight, fluffy khaki head. Good retention
Nose is a wave of bourbon soaked coffee beans, toasted malt.
Taste follows. Bourbon soaked coffee beans, chocolate, toffee, toasted malt. finishes with a hint of vanilla.
Medium plus thickness on the body. pleasently creamy. Not overly sweet.
Lactose addition is done nicely; as a balancing feature. Does not dominate.

From Liquor Shed. Bottled July 30th 2021.

It pours a dark brown with reddish hues, small but persistent head of tannish foam.

Smells malty, chocolate, vanilla, Bourbon, light coffee, brown sugary.

All in the taste with chocolate and vanilla taking center stage. Bourbon compliments rather than detracts, milk chocolate sweetness, alcohol is hidden pretty well.

Fullish mouthfeel for this high octane Brown Ale. Recommended.

Very clear and attractive brown ale, dark and nutty in appearance, with good head production and retention.

Rich and frankly amazing nose, with tons of coffee and bourbon, along with oak, red grape, caramel, and toffee. It smells quite a bit like other Founders BBA offerings, specifically KBS and Underground Mountain Brown.

Really nice and sweet malt base up front, with dark fruit and bread leading the way - similar to a barleywine. Bourbon isn't quite as strong on the palate as on the nose (a familiar trend with Founders' BA offerings lately). My first sip I got very little from the additives, other than coffee - but that changed by the very second sip, with the cocoa and vanilla joining in to create a black velvet cake-like flavor. Reasonably balanced between sweet and bitter, leaning a bit on the former.

Very little harshness, despite the ABV and barrel treatment.

I don't get much of a White Russian impression, if that was the goal, although the lactose does add a certain creaminess. In fact, I'm not particularly reminded of any cocktail, nor does it drink quite like one - unlike Highball Drifter, which I'm tempted to pour on ice.

This is an enjoyable beer, overall very good, but not an absolute stunner. I'd gladly pick up more, as I think it would make a great late night sipper or digestif. If it could live up to the promise of the nose, it would be world class, hands down.

Founders Velvet Rush is an imperial brown ale, much like their Underground Mountain, with a different profile of added ingredients, steering the resultant flavor in somewhat a different direction. I find chocolate and vanilla more forward than the bourbon and coffee here, over a solid malt base. The look of the beer is solid, a mostly opaque brown ale beneath a light tan two finger head. The beer is carbonated sufficiently to provide ample lacing after every sip. The smell is remarkably subdued. I get chocolate and vanilla, with little else. The flavors expand and fairly explode upon sipping.. this is a tasty brew, albeit slightly oversweet, a byproduct of the vanilla and added milk sugars. The mouthfeel is excellent. It feel like I am criticizing this beer by not all-out raving about it here.. I am not. It's damn tasty compared to the swellest of swill by your Joe Average brewery. My only dissatisfaction is with the endless unveiling of brand spanking new barrel-aged brews that are slightly tweaked versions of previous beers for a day. Velvet Rush to me, is a minutely dumbed down version of Underground Mountain, and I don't like succumbing to extrapolated hype one bit. Please, Founders.. you are a GREAT brewer. Slow down the train, give us something new when you have created a new masterpiece. Otherwise, I am happy with the tantalizing portfolio of beers that already exists. Ok I’m not going to get all technical. I love sweet dark beers. This barrel aged brown ale is tasty and very drinkable. It is well balanced, not too boozy. Coffee taste is prominent. It’s a little on the sweet side but a really tasty choice that I will be drinking during the long MN winter.

Founders Velvet Rush Imperial BBA Brown, 11.1% ABV. Pours dark brown with a two-finger light brown head that left no lacing. Nose is vanilla, chocolate, and lactose - pretty much chocolate milk. Taste follows, plus coffee, moderately sweet, slightly bitter. Smooth mouthfeel, overall outstanding.

A: Pours a deep brown/mahogany color with a fingers worth of head that fades down to a thin cap

S: Toasted malt and lots of coffee up front along with some caramel, cocoa, and vanilla

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with a mix of toasted malt, coffee, cocoa, and vanilla. Picks up the caramel and some light bourbon and oak. Finishes with lingering coffee, bourbon, and drying oak

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Definitely on the dry side thanks to the barrels

O: A solid BBA brown ale with the coffee, cocoa, and vanilla fixins. Definitely a sipper at over 11% and definitely worth checking out

Brown mahogany-like pour with deep creamy/ thick head. No visible carbonation.
Nose is coffee and dark sugars.
Taste follows suit but the coffee is nice and the sweet notes of chocolate and vanilla play their roles nicely.
Feels creamy and thick with lower carbonation, barely sticky, but a nice feel this is.
Nothing complex. Sweet, dessert beer, brown ale goodness.

I was saving this. For what? For now!

This is a very unusual brew, and it deserves a little respect. Can I get some respect over here? It's an "imperial brown ale brewed with coffee, chocolate, vanilla extract, and milk sugar aged in bourbon barrels." That's a mouth full, and as soon as you pour you know that's what you are getting. A mouth full of tastes. It is deep brown, with great fizz. An amazing smell emanates. Chocolate, bourbon, coffee, alcohol. In the taste, all these mix in huge quantities. There's no guessing, it has everything big. The overall effect is pretty thick and boozy.

Highly recommended. It is so refreshing to have something so unique and wonderfully made.

12oz bottle. Label is stamped for bottling date as '08.05.21'.
Back lit clear, amber brown colored body. Persistent beige head and cap. Leaves some peaks of lacing above the body surface.
Aroma of coffee and vanilla, with some chocolate. Bourbon barrel and oak influence is faint.
Taste is cocktail like, with a smooth and sweet blend of chocolate, vanilla, and coffee. Something close to cherry syrup appears. Some oak and bourbon mix in. More coffee and vanilla in the aftertaste.
More than medium mouth feel. Good carbonation.
Well crafted brew that allows the smells and flavors to blend and waft and create close to a unique experience. To be experienced as a sipper.

From a 12oz. bottle, 8 weeks from bottled on date. Appearance is a clear medium brown, thin head, quickly dissipating. Aroma of choco-coffee-vanilla, very pleasant. Taste is as advertised, subtle nuances are left to the individual taster, I’m sure that they may be there, I choose to not let my imagination stray too far. Mouthfeel is drying, and carbonated.
This is a fine example of the craftsmanship that the brewmeisters at Founders exhibit.
Well done.

Slightly less than a finger's worthy of light khaki colored tinged froth... Decent retention... Color is a deep dark brown with a slight chill haze... Rich nose highlighted by vanilla, bourbon barrels, budge and light coffee... Flavor profile is quite subdued though all the expected characters are present with the barrel aging cresendo-ing on the finish.... Mouthfeel is medium... LIghtly carbonated... Hides the ABV very well... Good beer, but a few minor tweak woudl make this potentially world class...

From the 12 oz bottle in a snifter. This solid brown pours a ruby tinged
brown color with a nice head of off white foam that settles to a thick ring, thin
layer, and sports some nice light lacing. Nose of vanilla, cream, dark cocoa, and
faint booze / bourbon. Flavors exceed the nose with dark chocolate, cream, brulee,
moderate bourbon, brown sugars, mild oak, subtle dark coffee, and warming booze.
Nice mouth feel; medium full body, light yet effervescent carbonation that is lightly
prickly amongst the booze, warming, moderately sweet, and a dry bourbon touched
malted finish.

Overall, more excellence from a fantastic brewery!

Cheers
