Excited to try this one since I'm from Michigan and love to see good Michigan beers. Watching the MSU/U of M game right now!

A - 4.25 - nice orange/amber color with a slight haze to it. Frothy white head that leaves a nice lacing on the glass. I would say the color is the most striking aspect of it's appearance, it's a very deep amber orange that leaves u begging to smell and taste it.

S - 4.00 - Great smell - grapefruit, pine needles, resin, citrus zest, significant bready/caramel malt in the background --> More prevalent than other IPAs, but nowhere near a red IPA.

T - 4.00 - I really can't knock the taste on anything. It's not my favorite, but it's definitely outstanding. Intense grapefruit/pineapple juice flavors. Orange juice, citrus zest. Pine needles. The malt is not as intense in the flavor, since the hops are so central.

M - 4.00 - This is a very bitter beer. The alcohol is completely covered. Leaves a bitter/piney taste in your mouth afterwards. The aftertaste is a little sticky/resiny/palate numbing - which is a good thing.

O - 4.00 - I think this beer stands out from the rest in it's own way. It has a noticeable malt backbone to it, but not nearly like Dogfishhead 60 or 90 minute, which I consider a good thihg. At the same time it's not as much of a hop punch in the face as Ruination, Pliny, or Hop Stoopid.

Appearance: A medium copper color. Decent clarity, with a substantial, frothy white head. Nothing out of the ordinary. Certainly nothing extraordinary.

Smell: As to be expected, the hops are the heavy hitters here. Floral is at the forefront, but citrus is right behind. While likable enough, I found the bouquet to be a bit wanting in complexity. As the beer warms, however, some more resinous notes are picked up.

Taste: The hop flavors match the aroma, but more is added to the mix, most notably creamy vanilla, and malt tasting of buttered toast. There's a lot to like here, but compared to other very good IPAs, it's a bit subdued.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light mouthfeel, with medium-high carbonation which adds a bit of a bite. The finish is both dry and refreshing.

Overall: With so many IPAs out there, Founders Centennial fails to stand out despite the fact that it is a very good beer in its own right. I would absolutely order it again, but only on the off-chance that a less desirable option was available.

Excellent IPA. If you ask me, some of the best balanced IPA's in the US come from Michigan.
