Hazy bronzed amber with a two-finger head that took a somewhat hard pour to achieve. Retention is very good, though. Hop aromas from across the spectrum come through: grapefruit is dominant, but pineapple, and floral notes are present, too. Bottled less than a month ago, the aroma is nice and fresh.

Flavor is excellent. The malt body is pretty substantial, but this is still packing plenty of hoppiness. Solid bitterness throughout with mostly citrus zest character from the hops. Mouthfeel is spot-on with an oily texture and carbonation that's lively but not prickly. Though a pretty big beer at 7.2 percent, alcohol flavor doesn't come through at all.

A really good IPA, if not quite good enough to crack the top tier. Between Centennial, Double Trouble, and the outstanding Harvest Ale, Founders has a killer IPA lineup.

A: Pours a crystal clear light copper. Tiny head that quickly fades. Nice lacing.
S: Awesome grapefruit and citrus. A little pine.
T: Grapefruit and citrus. Great firm and super clean bitterness. Wonderful malt backbone that's there but in a supporting role to the super star hoppiness. Little bit of crystal malt sweetness.
M: Perfect mouthfeel for an IPA. Great crisp finish.
O: Fantastic beer.

Pours hazy amber/honey color with three finger width foamy head. There is great head retention and lacing on the side of the glass. Well balanced malty and hoppy aroma with hints of citrus. Malty taste up front with an excellent transition to a grassy hoppy bitterness. There are some citrus notes somewhere in there. Nice, lingering bitter aftertaste. This is definitely one of my favorite IPAs.

One of my favorite IPAs from a bottle. You can get it at the local grocery store here in Michigan I have had it at one bar only that had it on tap and that was the first taste for me. One of my first IPAs. Not too bitter for a beginner. Have never been disappointed.

Serving: Bottle into tulip glass
Served: 12 July 2013
Bottle date: unknown (scratched off the side)

Appearance: A nice coppery gold color as it pours. Does not produce a big head, maybe one finger or so, that actually quite quickly dissipates.

Smell: Smells magnificent. The aroma hops on this beer are fantastic- it smells juicy, citrusy, and a little floral. Smells big and inviting.

Taste: The taste is a little more subdued than the aroma would have you think. It's possible that I got an older bottle of this so the hop presence had toned down just a little bit, since I bought the beer in a Kroger mix-a-six-pack, which tends to have hit-or-miss beers in terms of age. The hops, I found, do not beat you over the head, though they are obviously the most notable part of the taste itself. The hops seem nicely balanced, in a sense, with the malt.

Mouthfeel: Nice and smooth, though initially quite carbonated.

Overall: A great IPA. I'd be curious to see what a fresher one tastes like. In terms of IPA's from Michigan, I personally think that Bell's Two Hearted wins above this one. Trying Shorts Huma-Luma-Licious sometime in the next few days, so we will see how that stacks up.
