Notes: The perfectly balanced and decadent drinking experience of KBS meets the classic taste of hazelnut. Taking this bourbon barrel-aged stout to a new level, KBS Hazelnut allows the existing premium coffee and chocolate notes to soar to new heights when accented by the nutty sweetness of hazelnut.

The deepest of dark brown liquid swirls into your glass topped by a thin dark tan head. The body is substantial and smooth at once. Fantastic evolution of flavors follows your first sip. Hazelnut dances with chocolate on your palate, with subtle bourbon and coffee flavor in support. Absolutely luscious KBS variant.

A very hazelnut variant of KBS.
Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is hazelnut and chocolate. Taste follows with hazelnut forward and chocolate and roasted malts just behind. Feel is smooth and good, mostly smooth with some spikes. Overall it's a tasty KBS variant.

Well. Wanted to try this but put it off didn't want to spend the $27 or $8 per single at my local big box for what I imagined would be average, at best. So grabbed the one for under $6 at my favorite, returning home from the shore, local. And, wow. Aroma hazelnut all day. Tastes barrel bomb, chocolate and even some coffee as you go. So hard to find any coffee in a beer anymore, so this was a real treat. Saw it priced at $21 earlier this week, wish would've grabbed it.

12 oz. bottle. Black body, ample khaki head. Smells of coffee, bourbon, toasted hazelnuts. Tastes of hazelnuts, coffee, bourbon, oak, vanilla, unsweetened chocolate, and roasted malt. Hazelnut isn't over the top, nor is the bourbon or sweetness. Medium heavy, but well balanced. Very good.

Look: Pours black as tar. Syrup lace on the glass. If you're looking for a head . . . this ain't it!
Smell and Taste: Coffee, Chocolate, Hazelnut, Bourbon all seen to be equally balanced. Somewhat bitter aftertaste.
Feel: Syrup like with some carbonation.
Overall: It's good but not my favorite KBS.

Another KBS variant, but I'm hip to the score now, drink fresh, kbs degrades with age.

Pours the usual black pour. Brown head, 1/2". Looks the part. Aroma hits the fudge, chocolate malt, bourbon and hazelnut notes. Story checks out. No surprises.

Taste brings the same story, bourbon with a taste impact in the 6ish months of aging range it feels like. Really excels in the mouth feel, just like every kbs, the right amount of viscosity without a heavy Chicago pour need, you can dome these even in the morning. Even looks the part in a coffee mug. The coffee/hazelnut influence can overlap, but I think hazelnut is more prominent here but in the right proportion.

Those early morning tip offs baby. Or tailgates. So the hazelnut aspect here checks out, has a similarly satisfying effect like Grey Monday, but coming in much cheaper per ounce. The hazelnut is well done. Its another KBS banger at a good price that makes a lot of other potential bourbon barrel purchases seem extravagant price wise but also lesser in terms of quality.

12oz bottle
bottled on 01.26.22
L: jet black body; tall tan head fades to a thin layer of foam
S: coffee, hazelnut, chocolate, bourbon, oak, vanilla, Frangelico
T: Frangelico, hazelnut, semi-sweet chocolate, dark roast coffee, boozy bourbon, oak, vanilla, pepper, earthy hops
F: full body, ample carbonation, creamy texture, boozy & peppery finish
O: excellent KBS variant!! I only bought a single bottle, but I’ll grab a 4 pack next time I see it

Look: Dark black poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint hold glass. Foam Rosen to the surface. Lacing happening as it dissolves to the surface of the beer.
Smell: Getting Selmas of espresso coffee along with chocolate and slight hazelnut towards the end. Getting slight peanut aromas as well.
Taste: Big bourbon flavor in the beginning but once you get past it you get flavors of coffee, chocolate, even hazelnut. It hit all the markers it was describing!
Feel: Heavy bodied beer, slightly acidic. This is definitely a dipper beer.
Overall: Not bad! I got it because I searched it up and saw it was a world class beer. I think this is good to try but I wouldn’t say I’d buy it again unless re-reviewing.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a snifter.

Look- Black, medium brown frothy head, average head retention, above average lacing.

Smell- Hazelnut, chocolate, coffee, bourbon.

Taste- Predominant hazelnut, bourbon, chocolate, coffee.

Feel- Medium body, creamy, slightly mouth coating, slightly below average carbonation, slightly mouth warming.

Overall- Very hazelnut forward. This beer will probably be almost perfect after a year or two when the hazelnut has time to mellow. Thinner body than the original KBS.

L-Dep dark brown with a perfect chocolate head of 1/4-1/2 inch

S-Hazelnut coffee creamer..peanuts...light note of java

T-Rich chocolate syrup, hazelnut coffee creamer...a bit of java..

F-This is sweet and rich and pushes that line where some will find it cloying.

O-Decadent, opulent, rich....you name it...it's good for what it sets out to be but for me this is a bit rich and only a night cap type beer...

A: Pours an opaque thick viscous jet black in color with moderate amounts of fine active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass and faint dark cola brown + dark chestnut brown colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall dense foamy dark tan head that slowly reduces to a large patch of thin film covering a little more than 85% of the surface of beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Just shy of strong aromas of hazelnut + coffee beans over the top of moderate to strong aromas of dark + roasted + chocolate + caramel malts with moderate amounts of caramel + chocolate sweetness. There are just shy of moderate aromas of vanilla + toasted oak + bourbon. Very light aromas of earthy hops.

T: Upfront there are moderate to strong flavors of dark + roasted + chocolate + caramel malts with moderate amounts of caramel + chocolate sweetness. That is followed by strong flavors of hazelnut + coffee beans as well as light to moderate flavors of vanilla + toasted oak + bourbon. Finally there are very light flavors of earthy hops. Slightly stronger than moderate amounts of lingering roasty bitterness and moderate lingering flavors of hazelnut + coffee.

M: Full bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth and creamy.

O: Easy to drink considering the strength, more of a slow sipper but a fantastic beer that really hides the high ABV very well. Enjoyable with a nice balance in the complexity of flavors and aromas between the different elements (coffee, espresso, bourbon, chocolate, and vanilla) with the hazelnut addition.

Picked up a single while in PHX on 3-11-22 for $5.74. Bottled 1-26-22; consumed 5-20-22.

Beer poured black with a beautiful tan head with the initial pour.

Nose is hazelnut forward with some roasted malts.

Taste is the trademark huge malt base with a coffee and chocolate infusion, a touch of bourbon, and a whole lot of hazelnuts in the end. The barrel balances the sweetness very nicely.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied and very smooth.

Overall not my favorite KBS variant but not the weakest one either.

Rich taste that is almost too much. Good for a slow drink alone, too strong a flavor to pair with a meal.

Look: It pours very dark brown with a tan head. Head retention is low.

Smell: It has a strong chocolate and hazelnut aroma. There are also roast and bourbon notes with strong alcohol.

Taste: The flavor has a strong nutty flavor with roast and chocolate. There are also bourbon notes with very low dark fruits.

Feel: It has a full body with strong alcohol warming with strong bitterness.

Overall, the bitterness has an unpleasant edge to it, but the flavors are complex and the alcohol warming is quality.

Poured from the bottle into a branded Founders Barrel Aged series elongated tulip glass. Bottled 2/22/2022.

Creamed up classic top, light mocha colored with a big sheet on top. Looks like a dollop of milkshake ice cream on top sitting on a simple dark walnut brown nearly black body. Classic looking and great looking KBS as usual.

Delicious aroma. Big amounts of roasted coffee and dark chocolate, and a shocking amount of roasted nut that seems to cover a lot of territory, hazelnut, peanut, evan pecans. Not a hint of heat coming off of this. The only thing is that there is a big hint of rich round character, but if I didn't know this was KBS already I would have a hard time thinking from the nose this was barrel aged. Much of the barrel hinting notes are very much obscured by this bold thick excellent flavor, otherwise it's fantastic.

Palate comes with unexpected twists. Surprisingly light bodied, but full of flavor with some unexpected angles. Classic roast coffee, with rich milky tones less of dark chocolate than I associate with KBS. Dense sensing notes of more of wood than nuts, but light touches on toasted nuts that gets more into wood and bark flavors, but nicely without tannic dryness. Again not much hint of barrel notes, but there's a touch of boozy warmth but not easily picked up what it is.

It's not my favorite variant of KBS, but it still has it's character with some minor losses.

12 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a stemless wine glass

This beer pours black and is topped with less than an inch of mocha head that leaves little lacing.

Oh my, hazelnut coffee aroma. Smells delicious. I get some chocolate too.

Hazelnut coffee flavor. Earthy. I don't get much barrel character. Chocolate

Full bodied with a super smooth mouthfeel

Tasty beer. Strong. I think the hazelnut overpowered the barrel.
