12 oz bottle

Pours jet black almost still.. Big notes of tobacco, chocolate, roasted coffee on nose and palate. Mouth feel is viscous almost chewy and bit of a hop presence on back end. Coming through slightly oxidized however the low carb level i think is an attribute to this beer.

Bottle received as an extra in a trade some years ago. Guess I had better drink it.

Appearance is interesting. Dark brown, almost black body, thin white head.

Nose is sharp, piney hops with a caramel or molasses sweet malt component.

Flavor is dark and rich, sharp hops show up midway and dominate the finish. Smooth caramel malt slides across the tongue.

Tangy and tantalizing on the palate. The low carb does not prevent this from being a pleasure to sip.

Almost a black IPA, almost a Double Bastard type strong ale. This is a delicious and unique brew. For an older beer, this has held up remarkably well in my cellar. The hops are still huge. Wish I had sampled this while fresh as well.

A dark brown beer essentially, rolls red to the edge thin lighter brown head, 1/5". Aroma was hot. Boozy.

Taste had more heat. Lots of caramel, hops, bitterness, malt, alcohol. Some brown sugar, toffee notes.

A good not great barleywine.

From 12 oz bottle to snifter. Been sitting in the back of my mini-fridge for 4 years now.

A: Cola-brown, thinner appearance than expected. Not much of a head to speak of.

S: Earthy grain and booze. Disjointed bouquet with notes of copper, wood. Hoppy strain as well, surprising given how old it is.

T: Raisin and booze are noted first. Oaky, grainy. Minerally aspect as the flavors unravel, tastes oxidized a bit. A healthy dose of hop essence at the back of the sip, really unexpected given the brew's age. The bittering aspects bleed into warming booze and a lingering, medicinal sweetness.

M: Chewy mouthfeel, but lighter than excepted. Lots of scrubbing bubbles - if it was oxidized it was from the bottling

Not a bad BW, but nothing remarkable. I figured I'd sit on this bottle for awhile, but it hindsight that probably wasn't the best idea given this was a one-off. Given the amount of carb left in the bottle, though, my guess is that this just isn't a very good brew.

via Trade:

A: Deep, dark amber color. Minimal lacing that dissipates quickly.
S: Minimal sweetness, dried fruit, syrupy nose. Got a bit of smoke towards the end.
T: This beer starts out strong, and finishes with some dry dark chocolate. As it develops the thickness intensifies, the bitter chocolatey notes drop but the sweetness retains.
M: Thick and rich boozey notes, full body and a very long finish.
O: I've never had this beer fresh, but after 4 years its really solid. Almost 2 different beers from start to finish. I hope Founders will revisit this like they're doing to some other older brews.
