Aroma is very citrus dominant initially, with grapefruit and tangerine opening the way for deeply toasted, nutty malt and resiny, earthy hops.

Flavor is a bit more muddled, with citrus clashing a bit with the deeply toasted/lightly roasted malt and resiny hop bitterness. Bitterness lingers a bit much in the finish.

America's upper midwest region has always flirted with maltier, heavier, and more robust taste. But with the influence of hops come knocking, the American brown ale is taking a bitter turn.

Founders Misty Mountain Hop Brown comes out of the gate with a medium-dark brown hue and a sturdy frothy sand-stained head that crowns the ale. Robust aromas of toffee, nuttiness, coffee and cocoa pale in comparison to its citrus and pine overtones. While its taste is rich with toffee and caramel, that sweet balance will give way soon.

That's because over the middle palate, the sweetness gradually fades and the hops begin to rise. As the savory character of pecan, toast, caramel and butter pecan retain, their associated sweetness retracts and the bitterness sets in swiftly. Coffee-like with the shavings of fresh pine, the grassiness of a fresh mowed lawn and bright citrus rinds all complement the bitter finish.

Medium-full on the palate, the beer's rich upstart is slow to relax and keeps the taste richer and fuller late into the session. A mild coffee-like astringency balances the sweet finish for a session that's as robust as it is bright.
