Style: American Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This bold, imperial brown ale gets its body from a team of malts including Caramel malt for sweetness, flaked barley for dense foam, a bit of Chocolate malt for its deep color and Aromatic and Munich malts to add even more depth. German and Perle hops add a touch of bitterness to balance the malty sweetness. The addition of rich Sumatra coffee takes this perfectly balanced imperial brown ale to a decadent level.

All the flavors that I typically enjoy with porters and stouts (chocolate, coffee) married to a brown ale. Quite possibly one of the best beers Founder's has put out to date.

Sweet aromas of malt and coffee, smooth finishes, almost Heath bar toffee-ish for being 9%.. Almost too smooth and it drinks far too easy. Do yourself the favor and buy the whole 4-pack because one just isn't going to do it.

12oz bottle poured into tulip glass:

Look: Pours an amazing dark brown with at least an inch of head. Lacing is present as well.

Smell: Very strong coffee aroma right off the bat followed by some chocolate, caramel, and biscuit malt.

Taste: Taste follows the noes. The strong coffee taste hits me right. This thing tastes amazing. The 9% ABV is well hidden so this could sneak up on you after a few.

Feel: Medium bodied. Silky, creamy, and smooth.

Overall: Fantastic imperial brown ale. The Sumatra coffee in here tastes amazing. As a coffee stout/porter drinker this is right up there with the very best. Another home run from the crew at Founders. Glad I skipped the 6 pack and grabbed an entire case of this since we may never see it again!

From Bottle at home, thanks to brother Rick. Bottled dated 03/31/17, use by 07/21/22. That's 5 years, 3 months & 23 days.

I'd be interested how that came to be, but that may be moot as at first blush this stuff will take some serious discipline to cellar for very long.

Advertisement worthy appearance on the pour. Settles in with a rich, creamy tan, bordering on pale taupe colored head over a deep opaque inky brown/black liquid. The coffee aroma is very inviting & foretells the slight sweetness that's carried into the taste. The body is just right. Rich, chewy & very well balanced. Goes down very smoothly. At 9% ABV this could get dangerous.

Some chocolate, some coffee & lots of pleasure.

Not sure if it could get any better in 5+ years, but, hey, if I can get enough to tide me over, it's worth a try.

The semantics of whether we have a brown ale, porter or stout on our hands is overshadowed by the straight deliciousness. So stop talking & start enjoying.

Just amazing if you like rich coffee. Creamy mouthfeel. Phenomenonal coffee they used. A little sweetness. Perfect. I enjoy as much as KBS I think. This is a must have by Founders. I only got a four pack and will be getting my hands on much more.

Every once in a while some brew just blows me away. Here is yet another I found on tap. Very aromatic with roast coffee, split vanilla bean, hints of caramel and chocolate cake just to name a few. Flavor matches nose to a tee. Very reminiscent of bourbon county coffee without the 'syrupy' feel. Very palatable and the coffee, cake and vanilla lingers on. This was basically desert for my dinner cap off. Overall everything was spot on near perfection. Truly a mastercraft.

It is exactly what it's billed to be from the commercial description. It is loaded with coffee and has an creamy, smooth body. It pours a murky brown with a tightly bubbled head. Tastes like caramel and coffee and is on the sweet side for a brown but it is definitely a heavier version of your typical brown ale. It almost reminds me of an ice latte in a bottle and has more resemblance to an actual coffee drink than any beer I've had and I am a big fan of coffee flavored stouts/porters/etc.
