Style: American Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This bold, imperial brown ale gets its body from a team of malts including Caramel malt for sweetness, flaked barley for dense foam, a bit of Chocolate malt for its deep color and Aromatic and Munich malts to add even more depth. German and Perle hops add a touch of bitterness to balance the malty sweetness. The addition of rich Sumatra coffee takes this perfectly balanced imperial brown ale to a decadent level.

I was able to snatch up four 4 packs of this for $11.99 a pack..

The beer looks excellent in a glass with a nice light mocha head of foam. The smell is fantastic fresh roasted coffee with a light malt sweetness in the background. The taste and mouthfeel are equally phenomenal- the beer tasted like a fresh roast cup of Sumatra Coffeee with a toffee/caramel sweetness from the malt. There is also a nice, roasty/sweet lingering aftertaste..

There is a reason why Founders is one of the best breweries around.. Sumatra Mountain Imperial Brown Ale is world class..

Peace...

look: Dark Ruby that lets enough light into to let ya know this ain't a stout. Surprisingly light head. Messy lacing. Kind of like foam on a mocha I guess.
smell: Really deep, rich coffee. Best pure coffee nose I've ever sniffed.
taste: Coffee to be sure but some semi-sweet chocolate, maybe a hint of vanilla, a hint of spice and something woody.
Another wonderful Founders creation.

12oz bottle 3/31/16 BO. Pours a Dark Brown color with thin tan head and fresh collar , smells of coffee and roasted malts., taste and smell is cold press coffee with sweet toffee and molasses, mouth feel is creamy on the front with a little bitterness at the end, coffee is very prominent in the brown , its good but i only want to drink one , on the sweet side, if you are a fan of coffee brews this one is for you.

Found this at a local Market District for $12.99 a four pack. Into a perfect pint glass.
A - Hazy deep dark brown just a slight sight of light at the base of the glass looks like dark roast coffee! Head is exceptional a full inch of frothy mocha head that slowly pulls back to some lace.
S - Man the coffee really shines on this! Deep roasty toasted coffee goodness with some balancing coca powder and vanilla marshmallow like sweetness.
T - Slightly green at times giving way to bitter roast coffee yet mostly sweet almost like a deep roast cold coffee. Brown malts are there muddled throughout and it is sweet but it never really seems like a candy beer. I love it!
M - I can't believe this beer is 9% so smooth and creamy bold and bitter so much coffee flavor.

Ow man am I glad I got a four pack of this Founders always impresses me with their high octane dark brews!

What a beer this is.....is pretty much exactly what it says it is. The Sumatran coffee is extremely prevalent in both smell and taste, a little sweetness added to the possible bitterness and this is an extremely well balanced and well brewed beer. Looks great, mouthfeel is excellent, this is a real stunner.for fans of coffee beers, this is a must try.

Enjoyed on tap and now reviewed from a 1/2 growler.

Pours near black under a lasting mocha cap, leaving decent looking low sheeting a nd some ringed lacing.

Loaded nose of coffee grounds, dark chocolate and dark malty goodness

More of the same on the palate, coffee, dark chocolate, dark malts, caramel, vanilla. Densly flavorful, complex and well worth seeking out.

Big. Brown. Coffee. Beer. Warming brown malts and molasses-like sweetness serve as the base for a real boatload of rich coffee flavors. Full and smooth, with a solid body and abv punch.

12oz bottle of the 2016 bottling. Served in a snifter glass.

Pours a dark brown body, nearly black, two finger thick mocha head, great retention, bits of lacing. Smells of straight up acidic black cold brew coffee, roast, touch of brown sugar, slightly metallic. Flavour follows the nose- tons of coffee, which I enjoy quite a bit. Mild roast malt, touch of brown sugar sweetness. More bitter coffee follows through, eventually receding to a brown sugary sweetness on the finish. It's interesting for sure. Mouthfeel is medium-fuller bodied, a bit hefty, no booziness, good carbonation and a bit of brown sugar on the finish. This was a pretty interesting coffee beer and while it isn't the best, I thought it was different enough from the rest of the coffee stouts out there to make it a worthwhile pick up, although I think it was $3.49 a bottle.

Finally founders has done something great. After the dibocial of the the recent back stage re releases they decided to but this out in stores not just at the brewery. This may be the best coffee beer out there. Great coffee aroma and taste like an Arby's jamocha shake. Once the craft beer enthusiasts of the world try this it won't be on store shelves for long. Well done founders.
