Style: American Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This bold, imperial brown ale gets its body from a team of malts including Caramel malt for sweetness, flaked barley for dense foam, a bit of Chocolate malt for its deep color and Aromatic and Munich malts to add even more depth. German and Perle hops add a touch of bitterness to balance the malty sweetness. The addition of rich Sumatra coffee takes this perfectly balanced imperial brown ale to a decadent level.

12 ounce bottle, dated 03/31/2016

Bottle into snifter with an opaque brown hue, and long-lasting, one-finger beige head.

Aroma begins with the Sumatra coffee, with lighter notes of toffee, bread, woody earth, and chocolate.

Taste is a bolder, nicer balance of all the aforementioned aromas. The beer finishes with a lingering bitterness that compliments the coffee nicely.

Mouthfeel is medium-light with moderate carbonation. Very refreshing, actually.

Overall, Sumatra Mountain Brown was exactly what I expected for an Imperial Brown Ale with Sumatra coffee. It delivers excellent quality coffee aroma and flavor that does not completely cover up the base brown ale.

Poured into Kane snifter

L-Brown, some light passing through, looks a bit thin somewhat soda like.......3/4 inch head that fades into an off white cap.......thick lacing

S-Lots of dark, roasty coffee and cocoa powder, hazelnut, toffee, brown sugar, butterscotch

T-slight sweet coffee not as much coffee as the nose..........chocolate, molasses, butterscotch, nuttiness.........well balanced, no one flavor dominates

F-Medium +, creamy, oily, minimal carbonation, some boozy presence but not overbearing

O-very good, smooth, alcohol is hidden for 9 ABV, slightly on the sweet side

Is there beer in my coffee or coffee in my beer? I'm thinking of what an Imperial Coffee Bender would taste like.

Look: Very dark brown/copper color with about an inch and a half of foam.

Small: Light smell of caramel, coffee, and perhaps chocolate

Taste: Amazing - Tastes distinctly of coffee, toffee, and caramel but none of the flavors are overpowering.

Feel: Medium bodied and very smooth.

Overall: Founders does it again! Probably the best brown ale I've had.

A - Dark brown with reddish highlights, mostly opaque, a light tan head, and lots and lots of fine lacing.

S - Nutty malts, a bit of chocolate, and a big bouquet of bright coffee notes. Smells delicious.

T - A definite booze front, malty richness, nutty hints of almonds and a fruity sweetness, moderate bitter bite in the close. Throughout, the coffee pervades and supports these flavors, lending a definite cappuccino element to the brown ale core.

M - A bit thin, but not markedly so.

O - This is a good example of how flexible and expansive brown ales are, and just how good they can be.

12 oz bottled on 3/31/16 poured into a tulip glass.

Black, but not pitch, as you can see some red and brown notes under light. Poured with a one finger tan head that moves to a tiny rim of lace after a few swigs. The aroma is mixture of coffee, dark chocolate, hazelnut, and caramel. It's one of those that you could find yourself over smelling. The taste is in line with the nose. Incredibly balanced between the coffee, chocolate, and grain/hops. The heat is there, but well masked. It is carbonation is medium low, almost smooth, and the mouthfeel seems to be at times full, and other times a touch thin. Perfect for a unusually chilly Cinco De Mayo. Definitely liking the brown ale/coffee combo. Recommended.

Ranks up there with some of the best imperial coffee beers I've had. Silky smooth, delicious. And the usual roasted coffee bitterness you find in similar brews is non-existent. Cheers, Founders! You nailed this one.
