Brewed by:
Founders Brewing Company
Michigan, United States

Style: American Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This bold, imperial brown ale gets its body from a team of malts including Caramel malt for sweetness, flaked barley for dense foam, a bit of Chocolate malt for its deep color and Aromatic and Munich malts to add even more depth. German and Perle hops add a touch of bitterness to balance the malty sweetness. The addition of rich Sumatra coffee takes this perfectly balanced imperial brown ale to a decadent level.

This is what I imagine un-aged KBS would taste like. Velvety smooth, flavors of toffee, vanilla, chocolate and tons of coffee! One of the best coffee beers I've tried, don't hesitate to buy this one!

For every mood, there's a beer. And in some cases there's a beer for several moods. Looking to wind down? Or gear up? Or for a dark and balanced taste? Or for something strong in stature. Something bitter? Something sweet? Founders covers all these bases with Sumatra Mountain Brown.

The imperial brown ale pours devilishly dark and springs to life with a dense blanket of mocha whipped foam. The high earthen perfume of nutty, butter and soilish coffee rise up but not without a firm followup of chocolate, toffee, walnut and wood. Its taste is sultry with the toasted sweetness of toffee, caramel and candied pecan- all laying on a bed of toast and coffee.

With the Sumatra coffee riding high, its overtones of shaven woods, dried chicory and butter pecan is both delicate but bold. Supporting the coffee well is the chocolaty malt center that registers on the middle palate like candy nougat and malted milk balls. Alas, the dark ale trends beer-like and chases a woodsy hop bitterness, that easily disguises of coffee-derived bitterness, into a deep bittersweet finish.

Full in body, yet there's a lightness that the coffee brings. The beer's gently rolling carbonation is off-cask but light and creamy nevertheless. The light simmering warmth of alcohol allow a kaluha-like flavor to reward the finish like fine coffee liquor.

Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass bottled on 3 / 31 / 16. Pours a very attractive mahogany with a 2 plus inch sticky tan head that leaves gobs, webs, and chunks of wonderful lace.

Smell is cocoa nibs, roasted coffee grounds, vanilla, and toffee.

Taste follows coffee grounds, cocoa nibs, vanilla, and toffee and very one dimensional, but it is a dimension I am loving.

Mouthfeel is a little bigger than medium, moderate carbonation, almost creamy, maybe a touch dry, and drinkability is way too easy!

Overall I like this very much. An excellent breakfast or dessert beer. Will be stocking up on this tasty treat.

12 oz bottle poured into glass.

Appearance: Pours a coffee brown with a light off white, faintly tan head that lingers on top.

Smell: malty and hoppy and bitter on the nose. No real coffee notes to be found.

Taste: Nothing like the nose. Definitely like a cold press coffee, minus really any bitterness. Not too sweet at all, either. Very well balanced taste.

Mouthfeel: coffee taste lingers on the tongue. Pretty crisp Mouthfeel overall.

Overall: glad I got a 4 pack of this.

Bottled 03/31/16 (9.0% ABV listed): Pours dark chestnut brown color with a huge 3 finger foamy khaki colored head that was full of tiny bubbles and faded very slowly, leaving excellent thick foamy lacing coating the sides and rings as it went down. A great looking brown ale.

Smells of wonderful roasted Sumatra coffee, full of bold coffee notes that release bitterness that resembles a Starbuck's Sumatra bold - black with no cream. The next wave is toasted grains, brown sugar, burnt coffee grinds, toffee, caramel, light herbal hops, chocolate malts, barley or oats, and some more rich, roasted coffee. Smells just like the bottle states: an imperial brown ale brewed with Sumatra coffee.

Tastes just like it smells but with more sweetness and malt, which seems like half and half was added to the delicious roasted Sumatra coffee. The bitterness is aggressive, but if you've drank Sumatra coffee then it's to be expected. Nice mix of burnt coffee grinds, toasted grains, brown sugar, toffee, caramel, piney hops, tea leaf, cocoa powder, charred wood, smoked chocolate malts, oats, and burnt coffee beans. A coffee lovers dream.

Mouthfeel is thin and close to watery, with a medium feel and body, a high level of bitterness, mild sweetness and a nice malty base that attempts to tame the massive robust coffee flavors. Overall really damn tasty and much easier to drink than a 9% ABV brew should be. I love coffee beers and this is something I will seek out again, especially since it's a great twist on a brown ale.

7/23/2026: had the last bottle from my bere fridge and it tasted just as good, and maybe even better, with some aging. The coffee is potent and robust, really damn enjoyable again.

Lots of coffee notes in the aroma along with a slight nuttiness. It is on the heavy side for a brown for sure. Fairly full, viscous body with a creamy texture. The coffee bean flavor is exceptionally smooth. Very little bitterness at all. Just a lot of flavor. Brown malts and caramel with a subtle chocolate touch. A slight sweetness gives it almost a hazelnut taste. Loved it!

Live review from Founders!Reddish brown with minimal head. It does last for most of the beer though. Smells like cold press coffee. Super smooth mouthfeel, strong coffee taste without being bitter. Some cinnamon, chocolate also make an appearance. Really solid, great choice for a
morning beer.
