Style: American Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This bold, imperial brown ale gets its body from a team of malts including Caramel malt for sweetness, flaked barley for dense foam, a bit of Chocolate malt for its deep color and Aromatic and Munich malts to add even more depth. German and Perle hops add a touch of bitterness to balance the malty sweetness. The addition of rich Sumatra coffee takes this perfectly balanced imperial brown ale to a decadent level.

12oz bottle from Bottlecraft in San Diego. Dark brown, almost no head at all. Aroma is delicious coffee beans and malt. Flavor is more delicious maltiness and coffee beans. Nice beer.

Super brown almost black pour with an awesome fluffy head. Aroma is all coffee and roasted malts, but this is very much a brown. Earthy, nutty, hoppy and roasty flavors jab at the big, bold coffee taste but get knocked to the pavement. This is huge coffee up front in the nose, midway through the sip and lingers via a bitter aftertaste. No alcohol burn whatsoever.

Outstanding coffee-brown that could mellow towards something resembling balanced with some time (if that's your thing). Bit too much coffee for my tastes which makes it slightly acrid and acidic.

Founders Brewing Company - Sumatra Mountain Brown. 9% ABV. 12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled on 4/5/16.

Look: Dark scarlet/maroon body, with a small half finger white head, which ends up as lacing.

Smell: Lots of roasty coffee, slightly sweet and vegital, with bitter cocoa; not overpowering at all.

Feel: Incredibly smooth and light, with lots of carbonation; very easy drinking.

Taste: Very coffee forward, with some hints of bitter cocoa; very little bitterness and nicely balanced.

Overall: This is probably the best coffee forward beer I've had. Lots of coffee presence with little bitterness accompanying most others. Very drinkable and balanced.

12 oz bottle dated 04/05/16 into a tulip glass. Pours an opaque dark brown with 2+ fingers of light tan medium density head. Good head retention and some variable lacing. Nose is glorious coffee and roasted attributes, with hints of a little sweetness. Taste is delicious, heavy coffee on top of a very nice imperial brown ale. Mouthfeel is great, very smooth and easy drinking, carbonation on the lower side, finishes clean with a smidge of subtle bitterness. A style that doesn't see enough attention, this one is spectacular for my palate! Will be buying lots of this one, and can't decide if this or FBS is my favorite Founders offering. 2016 is certainly becoming the year of the great brown ales for me, this one and Fieldwork Chocolate Milk are leading the way thus far.

Update: I've had a 4 pk with horrible suspended tan chunks. So there's obviously some QC issues with this one. They definitely impacted the coffee flavor and aroma. I left my original rating unchanged, but had that been my only bottle my rating would be MUCH lower.

Excellent beer. Lots of coffee roast, toffee, brown sugar, and caramel sweetness throughout with enough bitterness to keep it from being too sweet. Very drinkable given the 9% abv. Awesome stuff.

Poured an almost black body that is thick and had a one-finger head with quick dying lace. Aroma is dominated by the pleasing smell of Sumatra coffee beans although bits of chocolate and caramel poke through. Beer is medium to heavy bodied and silky smooth, almost creamy, the coffee aspect dominates the beer's taste similar to dominance in aroma but still get notes of malty sweetness like chocolate and possible caramel notes. For a strong beer the ABV is hidden and the finish is easy going and this is a great beer to relax with.

Espresso and dark chocolate dominate the aroma, with a hint of sweetness and roast malt rounding out the profile.

Flavor is sweet, chocolatey, roast malt throughout, with coffee kicking in mid palate and carrying through to the fairly bitter finish. Coffee drinkers should love this. A little too bitter, for my liking.

Bottle into a snifter. Dark brown color with 1 finger of khaki foam. Intense roasted sweet coffee on the nose and taste. Very little bitterness. Very smooth all the way through. Hands down the best Founder's beer I've ever had. Better than FBS, FIS, etc. An amazing amount of coffee in this one, and it is freakin' delicious. This one's in my top 5.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 4/5/2016. Pours fairly hazy/cloudy very dark brown color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big nutty roasted coffee, milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, toasted brown bread, light smoke/dark fruit, herbal, wood, and roast/toasted earthiness. Fantastic aromas with awesome complexity and balance of coffee, dark/roast/bready malt, and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big nutty roasted coffee, milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, toasted brown bread, light smoke/dark fruit, herbal, wood, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/woody hop and roasted coffee bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of nutty coffee, milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, toasted brown bread, herbal, wood, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of coffee, dark/roast/bready malt, and light earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from hop/roast bitterness, that increases through the glass. Light-medium carbonation and full-ish bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and fairly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an insane imperial brown ale! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of coffee, dark/roast/bready malt, and light earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink for the big ABV. A really amazing offering all around, the coffee presence and complexity is enormous.
