Sumatra Mountain BrownSumatra Mountain Brown

Brewed by:
Founders Brewing Company
Michigan, United States

Style: American Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This bold, imperial brown ale gets its body from a team of malts including Caramel malt for sweetness, flaked barley for dense foam, a bit of Chocolate malt for its deep color and Aromatic and Munich malts to add even more depth. German and Perle hops add a touch of bitterness to balance the malty sweetness. The addition of rich Sumatra coffee takes this perfectly balanced imperial brown ale to a decadent level.

Notes from 12/7/10

Pours a somewhat cloudy medium brown with minimal head. Aromas are rather subtle coffee, some noticeable alcohol, and a faint amount of sweet malt. Taste is primarily coffee with some apparent alcohol. Has a nice hop presence for a brown. Malts are mostly caramel, and rather subtle. Medium mouthfeel, very slightly syrupy. Overall, this was good but not amazing. The alcohol is very apparent.

Notes from 12/7/10.

Pours a cloudy brown with not much head. Some residual lacing, but not much.

All kinds of coffee in the scent. Some malt presence as well as a bit of heat. I also detect some grassy hops.

There is a very large dose of Breakfast Stout like coffee flavor with some chocolate and slight bitter hops. These flavors are heavily front loaded not leaving much room for the brown ale malts to come through. Hopefully in time the coffee will be subdued to help the other flavors improve.

Medium in the mouth with feelings of creaminess. The aftertaste is clean but with a bitterness like celery.

This is very drinkable for the ABV. Solid but not exceptional.

Had this on tap at Founder's last weekend

A: Deep almond brown with an off colored head

S: Very strong but great coffee bean aroma and malts

T: Fantastic. Intense coffee but very good. Nice malted flavor

M: Carbonated very well, not too strong. Very smooth. Goes down great

Overall, I'm glad I tried this when I was there and also glad this was my growler of choice as a take home.

I got a Christmas Growler as well from my friend John Host! Thanks John!

A- Almond brown with a caremel colored head

S- Intense Coffee aroma, roasted malts, as well as a small hint of maple.

T- Outstanding, Coffee hits ya immediately followed by the dark malts, with an even balance through out the beer.

M- Great Carbonation (even from growler), smooth all the way through. there isn't a missing link from start to finish!

Christmas growler from my good friend Richard!!!! YESSS
poured to tulip glass, footed ale glass// pours a beautiful cascading head deep brown, hints of red in light, tan head fades

smells of delicious coffee, heavy malt, sweetness

taste is of fresh oily coffee, heavy body, slick, sweet and creamy vanilla notes, light complementing hop presence, a founders style traditional brown ale doubled and delicious coffee added to it.

mouthfeel is syrupy, slight hop bitterness matching the coffee quite well, alcohol hidden well, coffee addition is very nice, great heavy body, carbonation is lower but maintains well over 2 days - great balance and very easy to drink
