I just did a porter taste off of some of my favorite breweries: left hand, Great Lakes, and boulder. Founders stood out. Full flavor, full body, best taste. Biggest difference I notice outside of taste, was color. Founders is much darker than the rest. Maybe it's the closest to a stout, with the highest ABV. Might be why it's my favorite, but regardless, this is an awesome beer.

Black in color and no light seeps through. A fingernail of khaki head covers the rim and a third of the top. Alluring aroma of roasted barley with hints of coffee, figs, and a hint of smoke. The flavor is intense with roasted barley, smoked malt, and piney hops give it a different bitter direction. The mouth is chewy and viscous.

Pours a clear very dark brown color without highlights when held to the light, producing 2+ fingers of frothy, variously bubbled, moderately lasting, mocha head that leaves only a a few wisps & strings of lace. Aroma is roasted malt, bittersweet & Hershey's chocolate & a little creamed coffee. Taste is dark & bittersweet chocolate, roast with burnt bread undertone, roasted nuts & hints of molasses/toffee, an earthy mustiness, woody vanilla & herbal hops. Smooth, sweet start transitions to a dry, peppery feel in the finish, leaving a spicy, very dry, burnt chocolate & astringently bitter aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium-heavy bodied, low carbonation, silky & creamy with a lively finish & tongue numbing aftertaste. A nice brew that in a blind taste-test I would call a stout. I realize there is a narrow set of differences separating the two styles but this is just too rich to be a porter.

Very smooth, very drinkable. Toasted, coffee, oaky...cocoa even? Not your typical cocoa, but the deep, dark, rich stuff. Tasty brew. Well done.

This is almost like drinking soda. I don't know what that means but this beer is good. Silky, smooth, dark, no real aftertaste, it just goes down easy. I taste smoky oak wooden coffee, all in one medium to heavy mouthful. A solid beer maybe a little boring, but only because its perfectly balanced. A dream of being at a low lit beer meeting my wife for the first time and taking a sip of this beer. I can hear the others chatting. I just had my last sip and I feel like having a founders breakfast stout or another beer with complexity. Listen, this porter is good. Get it.
