Picked up at Finger Lakes Beverage Center. Founders in upstate NY!

Poured from 12 oz into nonic pint.

A - Absolutely black. Thin layer of foam on top, leaving lace on glass, but not much head to speak of.

S - Chocolate malt, roastiness, coffee. Floral hops buried under the malt aromas.

T - Smooth. Tastes like I know most imperial stouts minus any alcohol burn or warming. Lots of roasty dark malt, and a bit of smokiness. Coffee and chocolate type notes along for the ride.
Nice hop content throughout, but not at all overwhelming.

M - Low carbonation, but nice sized body. Not huge but not thin by any means.

O - My first founders. I hate how much I hear about some breweries like Founders, RR, 3F, because sometimes the beer doesn't live up to the hype, but this one definitely did. Can't wait to try more of their stuff.

Bottle in trade from ROBORB. Thanks man! Pours a rich dark black with a medium lived tan head. Smell is roasty malt, coffee and is quite nutty as well. Taste is very richly roasted, dark bitter chocolate, roasted coffee beans, bitter charred malt, and just really nice. A pretty substantial amount of bitterness either from the hops or the charred malt. Body is medium to full with medium carbonation. Damn tasty and easily one of the best porters I've had. How is this not a stout, and why is it not a year round beer?

Appears black with a frothy tan khaki head that laces well.

Smells of chocolate, and woodys-smelling malts with a touch of smoke. Almost smells soft and cabin-like.

Wow. So delicious tasting - Cocao podwer, earthy malts, roasted grains, and a touch of bright hops.

Noticeable carbonation gives an edge to otherwise super smooth mouthfeel.

Drinkability is dangerously good.

One of the best porters I've ever had.

General: I found this at a little craft beer spot. I'm a big fan of their breakfast stout and figured that since they had the porter I should try it. I poured this out of a standard 12 oz bottle into a chalice style glass.

Appearance: Great light tan head, the color of the beer itself is black, no two ways about it. There is lovely lacing on the glass after each sip. Very nice.

Aroma: Alcoholic aroma with a touch of coffee. It's got a nice chocolate note also that is really nice. It is a pretty straight forward porter, nice and clean flavors.

Mouthfeel: On the thicker end of the style but still acceptable. I really like it. Carbonation is moderate and is very nice. There is a touch of alcohol burn to this which is ok.

Taste: Chocolate, coffee and heavy maltiness. There is a touch of alcohol too which is fine but it's not that big because it's only 6.5% ABV.

Overall: I like this, I'm not crazy about it like I am their breakfast stout but this is a pretty good porter. I'm a fan and will drink it again, if you see it and you like porters this is a good example of the style.

A- Wow! This is a stout cunningly disguised as a porter. Super dark brown, almost black. 1 inch tan head on top. Only a pinch of light gets through this giving it dark ruby highlights around the edges.

S- Coffee up front. toasted chocolate and smokey.

T- Coffee and roasted hops. Good toasted flavor. Light caramel. Leaves a warm bitter coffee finish on your tongue. Complex flavors though.

M- This think has a very dry finish, like a red wine. Great body to it.

O- This is one of the best porters I have had. Great coffee flavor and wonderful sipper.

Color: The beer pours a very dark brown color. A thick two finger mocha colored head settles nicely on top.

Smell: Coffee, vanilla, malts, and chocolate combine to make an excellent smell.

Taste: There is a real malty, mocha, vanilla taste that sits pretty heavily on the tongue.

This is a beer that is best suited by itself or one other. Very drinkable but very filling.

A: Pours a beautiful black with brown around the edges. There is a slight tan head that quickly dissipates. Some great lacing as it drinks.

S: Smells of roasted malt, toast, caramel, vanilla, smoke, and bacon.

T: Starts off sweet and malty, but a huge smoked meat flavor shines through right after. It's fantastic. The finish is smooth, silky, sweet, and savory. Wow.

M: Full bodied beer. Starts off sweet and smokey, and finishes super smooth. There is a bit of cloying, but nothing insane.

O: This beer is fantastic. It might be the perfect porter. It's sweet, salty, smooth, smokey, and incredible. I need more of this beer.

a standard dark brown/black that is totally opaque with a two-fingered creamed coffee colored head made up of small, cascading bubbles that slowly settles to a film, but leaves its remnants on the glass with each sip.

roasty aroma of coffee, chocolate, charcoal, campfire, and brown sugar. very enticing.

ahhh. roasted malts and cocoa powder lead the way to a wonderfully rich mixture of flavors. bittersweet chocolate, dark, dark roasted and slightly creamed coffee. a bit charred with some brown sugar to sweeten it up. a touch of earthy and woody hops on the swallow with a slightly bittersweet and, again, roasty aftertaste.

almost fullbodied and very creamy with perfect carbonation and a drying cocoa powder finish.

goes down extremely well. no alcohol burn, tons of flavor, velvety smooth consistency. Might have a tad too much roast/smokiness to be perfect for me, but its probably the best porter I can remember having. Founders again flexes their muscles.

The smell of this beer is of chocolate and roasted coffee along with a bit of smoke. It pours with a nice 3 finger head that is dark brown. The head dissipates to 1 finger or less after a few minutes. Lacing is present to the end.

The taste is of chocolate and roasted malt, with a bit of smoke. The taste is superb, probably the best porter I have ever had. Mouthfeel is slick and silky smooth, adding a degree of extra enjoyment to drinking this beer.

This is a must try for any dark beer fan!

12oz bottle, served in a DFH signature glass

A - pours with a fingers height of tight and frothy, dark khaki colored foam. leaves behind spotty bubbles of lace through the drink. the beer is just about pitch black, with only the slightest dark ruby hue when held up to a bright light.

S - pretty aromatic...starts off with bold roasted malts, dark french roasted and lightly creamed and sweetened coffee, bitter dark bakers chocolate. a slight lactose-like sweetness, more cocoa powder comes out as it opens, along with a slightly bittering hop aroma. outstanding.

T - starts off with some dark roasted malt immediately joined by a bit of dark fruits, sharp black coffee. the hops come alive here, adding a strong big of grassy and earthy bitterness joined by some chocolate, vanilla, and mineral. the aftertaste is dominated by milk chocolate and roasted coffee. let this one sit a bit to mellow and really open up!

M - medium bodied, creamy and with a good medium amount of carbonation. quite chewy, leaves the mouth a bit scratchy and "fuzzy".

D - a well-rounded porter with all the classic characteristics, taken to a slightly bolder level as expected from Founders, borders the Stout line. dangerously drinkable and delicious.

Nothing cute nor fancy about the name ('Porter'), but a classy-looking label nonetheless. I honestly don't recall who handed this one over, but suffice to say it was one of a short list of OH/MI-residing BAs I've met since spring; this 12 oz. twist-capped bottle has stayed in the fridge since the day it arrived; poured to pint glass tonight.

A: A deep ebony, but without over-scrutinizing we'll call it 'black'. Topped with a finger of creamy tan, short-lived retention before reducing to a dimpled film. Good lace, clinging in broken sheets.

S: Oh, baby! Excellent aroma, a deep fudgy-chocolate. Vanilla-laced coffee, ample nutty roast.

T: If you know the wonders of coffee from a french press, then you understand the essence of this beer: silky chocolate, burnished java beans, sugars and light spices co-mingling. Just when a borderline 'too-sweet' sweetness builds, a balancing backlash of bittering roast ropes it back in. With each sip, this interplays beautifully. Toyed with a '5' here, one of the best-flavored porters I've ever encountered.

M: Velvety-smooth creaminess, a bit low on carbonation (may be a result of extra months of age - date unknown). The silky texture means more bitter chocolate coating is held on the cheeks and tongue...the aftertaste lasts an eternity.

D: Founders knocks another robust ale outta the park! After multiple tries of their venerated Breakfast Stout(s) and Imperial Stout, this Porter is in the same league. Big flavor, terrific aroma, decent drinkability ABV-wise (6.5%) and impossible to get on the West Coast without benefit of the trading community - all equate to a highly drinkable beer that's undeniably worth seeking. To call it 'exceptional' seems right...

Appearance: Classic Porter appearance with great viscosity balance

Smell: Rich malty tones

Taste: Rich balance of chocolate, carmel, and coffee, with a slight bitterness but not overwhelming for a porter. Smooth.

Mouthfeel: Smooth rich porter

Overall: A great balance of flavors with a nice balance on the viscosity as well for a great porter. Makes for a great fall or winter brew.
