Appearance - Pours a midnight black hue, nice creamy mocha head

Smell - Nice hints of chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, smoke, peat, campfire

Taste - Big rich coffee and espresso flavors right up front, so gorgeous. I am getting vanilla, milk chocolate, toasted almonds, roasted barley, tobacco. It tastes so rich.

Mouthfeel - This thing is silky smooth, perfect.

Overall - Founders makes the best dark stouts ever, its no doubt i would love their porter just as much. This thing is the tastiest damn drinkable thing I've ever had and EASILY MY FAVORITE PORTER. wow founder, wow.

Pitcher at Winking Lizard in Mentor Ohio. I had 1 and my friend had 1. Two beautiful black Pitchers of Goodness . Nose is milky cocoa, smokey, nice malted milk character, some dark fruits & really dark caramel. Flavor is sweet roasty malt, rich dark fruits. A touch of burnt in the slightly smokey & malty finish, along with a bit of hop that balances things perfectly. 1 of my favorite Porters "Ever" along with a Founders Breakfast Stout...mmm Good.

This by far the ideal porter that one can have or rather the benchmark all other porters should be compared to. The color and head are spot on, smell is sweet chocolate/coffee which tastes almost as it smells but better!

I go to Founder's weekly and this is one that I usually will get if nothing else catches my fancy.

Milk chocolate foam which is extremely short lived, well carbonated with slight sweetness in the aroma. Obvious chocolate, with slight acidic taste in the fore front. Evenly bittered with a slight coffee/smokey aftertaste. Extremely enjoyable!

A. Poured into a snifter from a bottle. Pours dark, cola like with moderate carbonation. Condensation sweats on the outside of the snifter as a creamy tan head forms with a frothy ring of lace.
S. The aroma of freshly cut wood. A whiff of smoked malts and burnt sugar. It smells like black coffee thats been on the burner for a while. Dark chocolate and roasted nuts with a faint hint of alcohol. The slight aroma of a smoldering campfire.
T. Founders Porter is a fantastic tasting Porter. Upfront it's smokey, earthy bitter and sweet. The taste of rich dark chocolate and almonds. Burnt sugar, caramel with a hint of vanilla. Bready like pumpernickel. Espresso like bitterness with a warmth of alcohol.
M. A medium body feel. Creamy slick and oily. Slightly dry at the end.
D. A slow sipper with everything you could ask for in a Porter. It has a big taste for a little beer. The very last sip was as good as the first.

After hearing about this brew for a couple of years and never being able to find it, I picked up a fresh sixer at the local Binny's...

A terrific blend of hops and dark roasted malts present in the aroma... This is pungent and powerful... Hints of cocoa and chocolate... This is amazing...

A smooth delicious flavor experience present here with those dark roasted malts... the piney hops.... the vanilla beans... the tinges of booze... An amazing beer for the style... Founders nailed this one... Easily one of the best examples of the style...

Finally get to try this one and I'm not disappointed at all.. Just an amazing beer...A truly top notch porter here... World class brew... I loved every minute of this...

I've had this bottle in my cellar fridge (approx. 38 degrees) for about 7 months, originally bottled on 1/16/2015. It was part of a Founders variety case and I drank 4 bottles last summer and gifted one to a family member. I didn't hang on to this one for any particular reason, just sort of forgot about it. Brought upstairs, allowed to sit at room temp for about a half hour before opening, then poured into a large wine glass.

Look: Very dark brown to black color with a 1/2" tan head that dissipated quickly. Little lacing but a continuing thin foam remains, evidence of carbonation that is unseen in the darkness.

Smell: Strong coffee/espresso and roasted malt, hints of bread and undefined sweetness.

Taste: Coffe flavor dominates early, giving way to dark chocolate. Mild hop bitterness, no real discernible alcohol taste despite 6.5ABV

Mouthfeel: Creamy yet sharp bite from roasted malts. Medium body.

Overall: Having only sampled a few porters before this one, and keeping in mind I drank 4 bottles of the original 6 pack earlier, I am inclined to say this is the best of any that I've had and, for my taste anyway, I believe that this sets a standard for the qualities a Porter should exhibit. While not my go-to style of beer I could say that I would buy this one again to treat my family members and friends that want to try something different or for a nice alternative to an after dinner cup of coffee

The pour produces a two fingered khaki colored head. This dissipates slowly taking on a pillowy appearance. The liquid is completely opaque. A strong expresso aroma. Tastes of burnt toast, sweet coffee, a little maltiness.... exceptionally well balanced. Silky smooth mouthfeel with just a little carbonation. One of the best porters I've had the pleasure of sampling. This will be a regular!

Nicely interesting malty caramel taste with a hint of chocolate and a malty aftertaste. This could be considered a "desert" beer, but (don't worry) it's not sweet. My wife -- who is not usually a beer drinker -- thinks it is "delicious".

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

Appears pitch black in color aside from a ring of mahogany highlighting at the bottom of the glass. Nice creamy looking one inch head that sinks down to a centimeter thick cap. It sinks down a bit more as the session goes on but is always present. Moderate lacing is left behind.

Aroma is nice and chocolaty, more so of the milk variety than dark. There's a bit of a charred wood and roasty coffee smell as well.

Taste is very chocolaty from the start with a nice caramelly sweetness to it as well. Midway through a bit of a wet wood character comes through followed by some light roasted coffee tones in the finish. The chocolaty flavor seems to be much more prominent though.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, and extremely creamy. It just floats on down your throat.

This is an excellent Porter, possibly the best I've had. It's almost like a cross between a Porter and Oatmeal Stout to me. That residual sweetness adds a nice dimension to it. I hope some of this stuff gets here soon so I can get more.

Dark, Rich, and Sexy, yes it is!

While I am still new to the characteristics of beer, I will try my best.

Nice dark color, and comes to a good head.

Tastes amazing, creamy and sweet with hints of coffee and cocoa

Texture is a little thin but the flavor makes up for any shortfalls in this beer.

This beer is amazing, and I have yet to find another Porter that is equal!

A - Thick, black liquid pours into the glass with a thick brown head that has great retention and coats the glass in sticky lacing. Never thought a porter would look this well.

S/T - Fresh roasted coffee up front mixed with hints of dark chocolate, and finishing with a robust, earthy roast bitterness.

M - Full body, low carbonation, thick and oily across the palate and smooth going down.

O - A quintessential example of a robust porter. Everything is spot on about this beer. I will definitely get this again.

A- black chocolate color with minimal head

S-Smokey, coffee, cocoa, somewhat nutty

T- Taste explosion of smokey chocolate balance with a smooth

M-lighter than you'd expect from a Founder's Porter (but this is what I like)

D-extremely drinkable due to the smooth character and 6.5% ?? Very smooth for this and therefore a perfect choice for any Porter lover like me.

another great beer from founders. Appearance is black like motor oil. Smells of malts, chocolate and some coffee. Taste better than its smells. Smell isn't bad but the taste supersedes it though. Mouthful is just undescribable and drinkabilty this probably the best porter ever

So my local Whole Foods Finally started getting some Founders brews and I could not be more stoked.

L: The bottle looks gorgeous--great coloring. Looks like a statement: "I like my beers like I like my women." Dark, rich, sexy, and apparently with a velvety black body and a good amount of great head. Poured into a sniffer with exactly two fingers of it and lots of lacing that lasts incredibly well.

S: Smells like a cappuccino sitting next to a coffee cake. It pains me to have a stuffy nose right now, because this beer probably smells much better than I can currently detect while still getting over this cough.

T: At least I can taste it. God damn this is fantastic. I had high hopes, and they were thoroughly fulfilled. Opens with chocolate and whole grain crackers, filling up quickly with a whole lot of roasty, high-quality dark coffee paired with earthy, grainy hops all drizzled over with a distinctly strawberry marmalade flavored malt. Finishes with a perfect blend of sweetness, coffee, chocolate, and roast each peaking in that order. I'm impressed they managed to keep the ibu's down to 45 in such a flavorful and strong beer (not super high, but solid at 6.5). I have to add that the aftertaste starts off really sweet, but the more you sip it, the more that roast flavor builds, growing from toasted coffee to burnt black french bread with a bit of rosemary.

F: A tad thin for my taste, but quite decent. Slightly creamy, slightly syrupy, like a caramel macchiato made with 2% milk. Nice and zangy on the tongue.

O: This is a phenomenal beer. Definitely deserving of the A rating--I'd honestly give it a 97 or a 98. Reminds me a lot of Sierra Nevada's Coffee Stout. I bet this one is made with cold-brewed coffee too. Makes me crave a cup of chamomile right now for some reason. In the bottom half of my range of preferred ABV, so this would honestly be my idea of a session beer, alongside the less bitter single IPAs and heavy lagers.

Just the right amount of heaviness, satisfying but it doesn't leave you feeling stuffed.

Sweet, but not too sweet.

Very malty, but not overwhelming, and a very smooth after taste.

Not much else to say, this is just one delicious beer. Definitely the best porter I've ever had.

Poured out of a bottle into a tulip. Pours jet black with a thin creamy tan head. Smells swee toasty nut, with malt and chocolate. Taste same with an excellent hop hit gives a full body and flavor. Enough hop to the resonate into nose. Mouthfeel nearly perfect with a hoppy porter. Beer happiness. One of my favorit porters!

This is truly the standard in Coffee Porters. Slight tan head resting atop a deep brown body. Pours smooth, notable coffee aroma. Rich Mocha flavor, slight carbonation - perhaps more than many such stouts and porters. Rich mouthfeel and lingering sweetness.

Poured into a tall pint glass

Dark deep block out the sun black with a low head or flim around the edges, very dark porter

Man there is alot going on here deep rich roasted malt and coffee/esspresso notes along with some more subtle hops notes and a light chocolate undertone.

Every single thing that you smell you taste, this beer is amazing on the palate, bitter malt and coffee flavors dominate the front with a smooth rich full chocolate middle and bittersweet finish. This is quite possiblly one of the best beers I have ever had.

Nice full and rich full body very sliky smooth on the palate. Complexity is hard to put into words all of the flavors come together so good its almot hard to belive.

Drinkability you ask? Yes please!

Pours a deep dark brown that almost looks black, with a nice tan head that is full of small bubbles and has good retention and leaves acceptable lacing. Aromas and flavors are incredibly complex and perfectly balanced for a porter; there's chocolate and roasted malts, with a hint of sweetness (marshmallow, maybe) and plenty of toasted bread crust and a deep nuttiness. There's a slight hint of coffee as well, and some delicate smoke qualities. This would pair perfectly with smoked meats, roasted marshmallow smores, or would be perfectly fine on its own. An incredible, nearly perfect beer. With time I may bump this up to a perfect 5 for the style.

I realized a few years ago that porters and stouts are my thing. Been trying all kinds from the singles aisle in my local liquor store ever since. I somehow just got around to Founder's Porter and it's so good that it made me start an account here just to talk about it.

I don't know how to talk in fancy beer talk (I'm a scotch drinker too and have the same problem with scotch-talk) but this seems like everything the style should be. The mouth feel, the taste, everything.

Excellent, excellent beer. I can't say enough about it.

A wonderful porter, poured into an imperial pint glass from the bottle. Beer is dark like coffee and produces a nice two finger chocolate head that leave a rich lacing with each drink.

The porter immediately hits you with its coffee, chocolate tones and at first seems like any ordinary porter, but after the first couple mouthfuls more complex flavor become present. There is a hint of licorice or mint, but a nice floral tone that finishes off each sip (or gulp). I can't quite place the floral tone but I feel like there is a lavender-like or maybe sweet-grass tone to the palate but it is a wonderful after-tone to the heaviness of a porter.

I highly recommend this beer to anyone who is looking for a porter that goes beyond the typical "dark" flavors of a porter and wants a more complex experience

The appearance is dark, thick and attractive. The smell is a little chocolate or coffee. The taste is the same and I'm not sure it could be improved. Somehow the alcohol is hidden. Listed as a porter, you should absolutely have this one if you like stouts.

Served from bottle into glass. Good amount of foam, head was cream in color, beer was opaque brown black. Smell had fruity, coffee, and caramel notes. Tasted had deep coffee flavor, slightly smoky, sweet chocolate, strong hops, and good bitterness level. Mouth feel had a good body. Overall a great porter, had it before and will have it again.
