12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Fridge temp, about 41 F. 1421339130127B is the bottle code. Purchased by a friend in Texas and shipped to Washington.

Pours black with a tiny head. Small amount of very fine, very slow carbonation. Smell is rich, chocolatey, slightly yeasty, some coffee. Mild, though. Maybe it'll open as it warms.

Taste is coffee, yeast, date-ish sweetness, smokey roast. Quite nice.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly grainy. Overall, quite tasty. Not sad I have most of a six pack left.

A- very dark, black, oily body but not much of a head builds up easily.

S- roasted barley all the way here. Smells like there may be a hint of fruit adding some complexity from an English ale strain. I wonder if they used an American or English strain here.

T- Definitely a big roasty presence. Pretty big sweet body behind it, bitter roasted finish.

M- Nice smooth body. The carbonation is a bit below medium, works well here. Fine texture to the bubbles.

D- Not a poorly crafted beer at all. But I do prefer a little more chocolate to my porters and less of a roasted bite.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of chocolate, roasted malts, a touch of coffee. Taste is a good balance of chocolate and coffee, some maltiness. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall is a solid beer worth seeking out.

A - Pours completely black with a thin mocha head. Small lacing is left.

S - Vanilla, medium coffee, light roasted malt, moderate dark chocolate.

T - Lot of coffee up front as is usual of a porter. Roasted malt in the middle along with sweet dark chocolate. Almost Stout-like in it's flavors. Finish is slightly bitter with a very small amount of vanilla coming through.

M - Medium bodied with light to medium carbonation.

O - Overall, I think a lot of porter taste the same, however this one had a bit more flavorwise than most and it didn't have heavy stinging carbonation. So in terms of a porter, this one is a winner.

The aroma on here...wow. Very rich, even for a porter. Full of espresso, bitter chocolate and all things malt. Just like sniffing a cold mocha.

Mouthfeel here is very creamy. Body is a thick mix of coffee and dark chocolates (but mostly coffee) in harmony with one another. This doesn't turn exceptionally bitter until the finish. There, the finish features a moderate hop bite and some bitter coffee to give a somewhat astringent ending to the swallow. The coffee certainly hangs around a while afterwards.

This is a very aggressive porter. I respect it for that. Drinkability will be harmed for that reason, at least for me. Those who want a thick, punch you in the face porter should turn to this one.

A: BLACK, couldn't get any light through this beer. Doesn't pour with much of a head and had a small amount of lacing.

S: Has a nice roasty coffee smell, big roasted malt. Also has a small bit of hops to the smell.

T: The taste isn't bad, just as it smells. A pretty coffee forward taste with small amount of hops as well.

M: Pretty smooth with a light carbonation, doesn't leave much on the tongue goes down smooth.

O: Pretty good beer, not a ton going on but what it has is good. Worth a try

An interesting beer from Founders. I've never been so up an down in categories on any beer before!

The pour is great, super lacing and a black hue with flashes of brown on the sides, the head is a khaki color. Beautiful.

Smell is not so beautiful since I barely even get any aroma off this tapped beer at all. Roasted nuts, flutters of yeast...roasted malt and some chocolate maybe, just a very disappointing aroma from a super solid brewery.

Taste is a huge improvement in the smell. A Big fudgy beer with charred malt, hop bitters, and an overall trail mix like taste that all compliment each other.

Mouth is a little over carbonated for me and medium in feel. A mostly solid beer, I'm just surprised Founders would produce a beer with such a weak aroma and not awesome feel.

a - pours dark. you can maybe make a head if you our hard. dark. even the pour looks roasted.

s - ok here you can small the roast. hints of chocolate and coffee. not to my nose. but my nose is currently stuffed up. i smell the dark roast appeal.

t - ok here we go ..... nice dark taste. not heavy. not light just right for a porter. if you want porter this is it! no problem!

m - ok here is the deal. with stouts and porters sometimes i a drinking a beer milkshake. not here. IMHO good balance.

overall - U know in the 80's a polar vortex was called a COLD FRONT! . During these cold weather days this porter does the job. I drink it slow and enjoy it.

this is my review.

A- Pours oily black with a huge Guinness esque head.

S- Scents of coffee and heavily roasted toffee malts. backed with a hint of coaled wood.

T- Leads and is dominated by a super smoky taste with a light charred malt backing.

M- Could be a bit heavier but meets the expectations of a solid porter.

D- I would only go for maybe one or two of these due to their very bold taste.

Poured into pint glass

Appearance – Pours a dark brown almost black color with a billowy dark tan head. The head is rather persistent and lasts quite awhile. Eventually when it fades, and when the glass is swirled, it leaves some nice lacing.

Smell – The nose is relatively mild, but contains some notes of chocolate and a bit of caramel and vanilla sweetness.

Taste – A nice sweet bready maltiness is the first to be tasted. Roasted barley and some chocolate work their way into the flavor toward the middle of the taste. At the very end ,it sweetens again this time with some chocolate and vanilla which round out the taste profile quite nicely.

Mouthfeel – A nice smooth yet relatively thick body. It coats the tongue but yet is still very east to drink. The carbonation is spot on enhancing the drinkability of the brew.

Overall – A nice porter with lots of deep roasty and chocolate flavors. One of the better and more affordable porters.

Appearance: Black, small head. Not off to a good start.

Smell: Mild sweetness with some coffee and chocolate.

Taste: Nice roasted sweetness, full mouthfeel. Dark chocolate flavor, and then a bit of smoked meat flavor shows up.

Overall: I had never tried this flagship from Founders so picked up a single. It was not old, but didn't quite hit the mark with me. The smoked meat flavor that showed up was interesting but not enough for me to rate this better than GL Edmund Fitz or others.

A - Pours a dark, dark brown, almost black but not quite. Beautiful, long-lasting reddish mocha head that recedes to a collar with little lacing, although some legs.

S - Nice and very roasty, with a bit of chocolate. A hint of something like licorice that I just can't figure out.

T - A damn fine porter. Roasted malts dominate, with some subtle notes of chocolate and even a dash of hops. Definitely very malt forward.

M - Very smooth and creamy, nice carbonation lightens it up perfectly.

D - Great porter, but I've been spoiled by many others. As a regular offering its wonderful, and would pick up more often if a) it were regularly available in NYC and b) I was a fan of porters.

Pours a frothy robust brown head. Dark brown body. A bit of lace down the glass.

Smells of hops, chocolate, coffee. The chocolate is most notable to me. It smells very good.

The chocolate and roasted coffee come out first. The finish does have some hoppy bitterness to it, but is always kept at bay the sweet malt flavors im getting. Hop spice up front.

Mouthfeel is creamy medium to heavy body with a dry finish. Spiciness is present.

Overall this smelled really good but I wasn't really feeling it. Worth a try.

Founders Brewing Company's eponymous porter is black as sin; nearly impervious to light, it shows sullen orange highlights only at its base. Its large, pebbly light brown head shows little retention, but the lacing is good, consisting of spiky slabs and caverns. The aroma is light-medium in intensity: creamy coffee backed by cocoa, with hints of toffee, doughy malt and alcohol. The flavor is predominately bitter light chocolate and thin, tart, bright coffee; the palate lacks the depth predicted by the nose, and has none of its sweetness, landing distinctly on the bitter end of the scale. The finish is a mild hit of toffee, and is fairly dry; the linger is a mild chocolate flavor paired with a moderate earthy hop bitterness, both of which last for a good while. Mouthfeel is thinnish for the medium-full body, and the texture is medium-creamy and medium-peppery from the well-expressed carbonation. (12 oz bottle, 60 days after pkg)

12 oz bottle poured into a pint.

Pours dark, opaque and thick, looks much more like a stout than a porter. Even held up to the light, the color is still opaque. Very little, dark brown head, that quickly dissipates and leaves some lacing.

Smells very strongly of coffee and dark chocolate.

Taste is very similar to the smell, starts off with bitter dark chocolate with a cold, almost stale coffee finish. Thinner than expected as the pour made it seem like this would be a thicker/chewier beer.

Quite easy to drink overall but the taste didn't seem as balanced as I would like, and the stale coffee aftertaste is something I could do without.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into shaker pint glass.
A: Pours black as a starless night...completely opaque with 1/2 thick dark tan head that recedes fairly quickly. Very nice.
S: Sweet roasted malt and dark chocolate. Straight-forward, but good.
T: Follows aroma well, but lacks the intensity that it was promising. Still above average for style.
M: Smooth with a hint of dry bitterness.
D: Quite drinkable. Not as complex as many brews, but good for style.

12 oz. bottle poured into a stout glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep, dark brown that's very close to black. Short tan head. Some lacing.

Aroma: Surprisingly earthy and floral and hoppy for a porter. Also lots of chocolate and black coffee.

Taste: Nice hoppy, bitter taste with dark chocolate and burnt notes. Lots of black coffee bitterness. Pretty complex.

Mouthfeel: This is a sturdy, robust beer - it's a sipper despite moderate alcohol. Not heavy, but it's a very full-tasting beer. I paired it with chocolate. Wise move.

Overall: A really nice porter. For fans of the style and fans of good beer.

Founders Porter ABV: 6.5

A: Pours a black coffee fluid with a tan head. The head of the beer takes up most of the glass and you have to wait a little bit for it to fall. Looks very appealing and after about 5-10 minutes it falls to a half inch head.

S: The smell is very malty with almost a coffee hint. Also, has kind of a sweet smell that lingers in the nose along with the other smells.

T: Taste like coffee beans, chocolate, and malts. leaves a bitter taste on the tongue along with the chocolate flavor.

M-D: the fluid in the mouth turns to foam almost instantly. However, it does go down the palate rather smoothly. Very thick consistency. Will have again, but I would have to have it with Wesbrownyeah.

Founders is changing my life one batch at a time. They are becoming the new all around favorite in the sessions I have here.
A- Deep coffee color with chocolate milk colored head that has nice body but dissipates quickly

S- Nutty coffee breakfast in a bottle

T- Matches the smell to a tee. Also has a malty oak finish. Not too sweet, not too dry. I might have to get a 6er for just yours truly

M- Above average but not stellar. A little puckering from its bitterness.

D- Again, above average, a little dark for my usual session taste buds but like I said earlier, founders is proving to expand my pallet exponentially so I could give it a go

Bottle poured into Duvel tulip.

A- Pours a deep black with minimal head. Small lacing left from the head receding.

S- This brew is loaded with roasted malts and dark chocolate. There is a slight hoppiness in there and some cocoa powder.

T- Cocoa powder and roasted malts with a slight soapiness. There is a faint hoppy taste and a small bready character.

M- Medium to full bodied with pretty good carbonation. Regardless of the carbonation, the brew seems pretty smooth.

O- Pretty good beer all around. Not one flavor dominates and all seem to go good with each other. It just seems like it could have been a little stronger all around.

12 Ounce bottle served very cold in pint beer glass

A) Black paint. No color passes through. Short puffy beige helmet dissolves quickly to leave a lacy cover

S) Black licorice, mild hop spice, burnt bread, coriander

T) Burnt coffee, pure dark chocolate, raisons and cooked dark fruit.

M) Consistency of root beer. Ample carbonation, sticky, full bodied

O) A very good example of the classic English porter

Surprisingly hoppy compared to a lot of porters out there. You get some roasted malt & bitter cocoa up front but then a punch of hops bitterness. A bit of a clash for my personal taste, but still a solid beer. Founders always makes well balanced brews so even if one or two notes are a bit unexpected they never overpower the rest of the beer.

A: Black in color with no light penetration. Gorgeous 1 1/2 finger head that is made of uniform bubbles. The head lasts a long time - and is dense enough to reshape as you move the glass.

S: There is a smoked or charred smell. Like a charred hardwood. It almost smells like hickory smoked meat.

T: Smoke up front then again at the back. Slight mocha taste as it warms.

M: Dry feeling but goes down easily

O: The appearance on this one is amazing! If you handed this to me and said it was a smoked porter I would believe it. There is a lot of smoke essence in there. This one is good - but I wanted to love it and I am not there.

Enjoyed 11/24/2012 from the bottle

Appearance: Dark, dark brown. Creamy brown head.
Aroma: Dark chocolate, smooth roastiness

Taste: Lots of dark chocolate, roasted bitterness. Very creamy.

Mouthfeel: Very silky, creamy feel. Really nice. Not overly thick (as in, not imperial stout kind of thick).

Overall: Mouthfeel is great. Nice head retention and lacing too, but too much roasted bitterness for me. Would like it a touch more balanced.
