Scotch Ale, as I've discovered, are damn tasty brews that rate highly in my books. Couple that with Founders - brewers of the BEST STOUT EVER (well out of all the Stouts I've tried) and you've got a mouth-watering on your hands... or tongue, which makes more sense. In the immortal words of Homer (Simpson): "Mmmm, beer hhhrggghhh...".

Poured from a 355ml bottle into a Chimay chalice.

A: This Scotch Ale presents a cloudy red/brown body (a pleasing ruby when held up to light) with a khaki head that was always going to fade to nothing as most heavy ales do.

S: Rich dark fruit aromas; macerated figs, dates and raisin notes abound with some typical brandy alcohol hints and a sticky toffee malt base throughout. The biggest take away from the aroma is that this is a sugar heavy Scotch Ale, but hopefully the flavour will take on some other complexities.

T: Figs, dates, raisin, brandy and toffee malt: check! The sugar is markedly better balanced with the rest of the profile than expected, this is good, no - great. It's easy to become one dimensional with an ale of this style, so it's great to see Founders balance this brew so evenly. There is a combination of pine/medicinal hops at the back end, along with some boozy alcohol notes.

M: As with the Breakfast Stout the body is quite heavy and chunky - like some sort of beer-flavoured tar, I wonder how Founders do this so well? Aside from the body it has light carbonation... it's so heavy and smooth, I must find out what their secret is!

D: Damn these guys at Founders are good. Here they've taken a style: Scotch Ale, and added something unique, which became more noticeable as the glass emptied: those typical American pine hops - you know that hop note at the back of almost every APA/AIPA? Yeah those ones, and with this those clever bastards have added an American slant to their Dirty Bastard, bravo. Does it do for Scotch Ale what Breakfast Stout does for Oatmeal Stouts? Not quite, the best Scotch Ale in my opinion is still Skull Splitter, but hey this is a close second.

Food match: Heavy meats, festive medieval fare - pig on a spit roasting over a slow flame, potato gratin, roasted kumara/yams/sweet potato, carrots, pumpkins, etc... this brew is mightier than the meal so be warned and eat lightly.
