This is a strong dark red. The color is attractive. The smell is a little spicy and sweet. The taste is awesome. Somehow the alcohol content is hidden in a sip, even though a full glass will knock me over. I have never had a red like this before and I beg everyone to try this one. I someday hope to find this one on tap.

12 oz bottle poured into a Founders imperial pint.
8.5% ABV, 50 IBUs, Bottled 01/21/14

A - The sexy and deep ruby-hued mahogany color pours with clarity, glugging into the glass to form some brief carbonation cascading, which builds the dense cream-filled coffee colored head. Stupendous retention eventually gives way to sheets of lace left clutching the glass.

S - Caramelization of the malts opens up a deep complexity of sweetness. Semi-melted caramel cube and brittle toffee fills in the gaps left by the profound toastiness that overruns the lightly grassy hop nuances.

T - Offset slightly by earthy hoppiness and dry roasted qualities, the sweet malt comprised toffee slivers bobbing in melted caramel also brings a drizzle of chocolate over thick sliced, lightly toasted, soft rye bread.

M - Dirty Bastard has a super smooth, almost creamy medium-full bodied feel that lingers with balanced sweetness, never becoming cloying. It's alcohol level impressively glides by almost fully unnoticed save for the gentle warming finish.

O - One of the most quintessential stateside Scotch Ales, Founders' Dirty Bastard is full-flavored and nearly full-bodied but isn't 'intense' as most of the style reflect. Instead, the sweet caramelized wort opens up nuanced complexity of sweets and bread, carefully balanced by hops and alcohol dryness for a smooth beer that can quickly sneak up on you!

Pours dark mahogany, crimson against the light and very hazy. Half a finger of toasted marshmallow head with average retention and nice waves of lacing.

Deep caramel and toffee, well integrated malt with nuances of chocolate, light spice and finished with medicinal hops and alcohol.

Malt is barelywine strength, caramel sweetness, chocolate and toffee, notes of bourbon soaked dark fruit and nutmeg. Hops are balancing this one out nicely with herbal bitterness that sticks around. Sweetness takes away from any true peat smokiness or scotch flavors. Otherwise darn great.

Slick and creamy, heavier decadent body with enough carbonation. Dries nicely though the alcohol comes off as medicinal when cold.

Well crafted Wee Heavy that really could pass as a barleywine, highlights the complex malt packed into it. The flavor is bold and complex with whiskey, sweetness and fruit features and is easily the best part of this beer. Founder's is always solid this one is no exception.
