look: 3.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 4

Appearance: Pours a murky red brown color with a small off white/light khaki colored head that dissipates to a thin ring. Body is very hazy but with quite a bit of visible sediment.

Smell: Basically a malt bomb. Caramel, various dark fruits, toffee, slight milk chocolate and leather.

Taste: Sweet malt, raisins, fig, chocolate, peat smoked malt, caramel and a bit of earthiness as well.

Mouthfeel: Medium/full bodied sticky mouthfeel. Carbonation on the higher side of medium with a somewhat aggressive feel.

Overall: Another good one from Founders. This is probably a bit under appreciated considering it's available year round, but this is absolutely a beer that's worth a repeat purchase

Poured from the bottle to a snifter.

A: Poured a pretty hazy dark brown with a ruby tinge with almost no head.

S: Toffee, root beer, bready malts, some alcohol. Maybe some citrus hops.

T: Toffee, bready malts, some chocolate, some alcohol on the end. Maybe some citrus hops as well.

M: Medium bodied. Pretty easily drinkable. Sweet aftertaste. Slightly above average carbonation. Some alcohol burn.

Overall a good beer but probably wouldn't go out of my way to get it again. Better when it is warmer.

A - 4.25 - Dark murky brown beer, with a finger of tan head that dissipates down to a thick film. Nice lacing
S - 4.25 - caramel, peat, chocolate, vanilla, toffee, butterscotch, whiskey
T - 4.25 - caramel, whiskey, chocolate, boozy, cream
M - 4.25 - has a nice creamy/whiskey/vanilla aftertaste, medium-heavy mouthfeel, alcohol present but appropriate
O - 4.25 - Great wee heavy. I'd love to compare it to Old Chub and see how they stand up next to each other.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a standard pint glass.

Pours a clear mahogany in color with a short tan bubbly head falling quickly with some ephemeral lacing. The nose is big and sweet and opens up as the beer warms. It highlights rich caramel, sticky toffee, some butterscotch and hints of spice (hops and maybe some cinnamon). The taste is very similar featuring heavy sweet malt, caramel, toffee/butterscotch that ends with bit of spice, but also a touch metallic and with a bit of alcohol. This has a nice rich body and medium carbonation. Overall, a very tasty Scotch Ale, rich and sweet.

a great example of this style here, and it drinks dangerously easy for how strong it is. caramel in color, clear copper shine, with an inch of airy head without much to it, fades out rather quickly. the nose is a complex mix of sweet grains, with toffee and butterscotch notes, molasses too, with its earthy spice. the flavor is just as sweet and malt driven as the nose, only the layers of grain sort of come in waves. i get some wheat malt in here, a ton of pale and and caramel malts, maybe some chocolate malt too. finish is sweet, i couldnt drink too much of this, but its a smooth feeling beer with quite a lot of body and it hides its strength well. its a good winter drinker but for the sweeter beer drinker. i also should mention that this burps real well, i was tasting it for a long time after drinking it, and it was pleasant the entire time. another solid offering from founders.

Undated bottle, cellar temp, into goblet
Aroma - malty
Head small (2 cm), creamy, light brown, mostly diminishing
Lacing OK - narrow continuous ring
Body dark red-amber, clear
Flavor -Begins malty with a slight, just noticeable, hoppiness
Ends with the hoppiness and a slight alcohol burn
Body is medium, slight oiliness, soft carbonation
No diacetyl

A very well balanced example of the Scotch style ale. This is the one that got me trying them again.

An outstanding beer that went to far with the bitter. Awesome for the hop head, just outstanding for me, which of course is a good thing.

APPEARANCE: This beer looks a lot like a Barleywine. Mahogany in color, with an eggshell head. Good retention, the head settles into a solid, off-white cap. Lacing is strong.

SMELL: Yep. Smells like a Barleywine too. Smooth, malty aroma with plenty of dark fruit, banana and a little bit of spice.

TASTE: 50 IBUs seemed high for a Scotch Ale to me, but wow, this has a nice, grassy, slightly citrusy, hoppy kick at the end. Up front this is everything I would expect from a scotch ale; smooth malts with an ever so slight smokiness.

MOUTHFEEL: The Dirty Bastard is semi-sweet and a lot thinner than I expected. It goes down smooth and silky with minimal sparkle from the carbonation. The hoppy kick at the end also provides a slight pucker.

OVERALL: Great Scotch Ale. The thinner body makes it go down easy and the 8.5% could be dangerous. Excellent winter beer.
