Drank from a 12 fl. oz. (355ml) bottle purchased at Julio's Liquors, Westboro, MA
Bottled 01/08/13
Served in a thistle glass

With a vigorous pour, a tight, frothy, four-finger, beige colored crown rose above the hazy, chestnut brown liquid. Very stately looking. A curtain of lace coated the glass and lasted throughout the session.

The nose was solid. Somewhat peaty and smoky. A bit steely. Slightly crisp, powdery and dry. Biscuity malts and sweet caramel notes came out as the beer warmed.

Toasted malts were apparent in the flavor profile. There was a generic fruitiness in the center, along with a touch of smoke. The finish was very hoppy and bitter. Citrusy hops were far too abundant for a beer of this style. Some booziness was also noticeable.

The mouthfeel was somewhat thin and flimsy. Slightly creamy. The liquid contained a very fine and mild carbonation.

I usually like Scotch ales, but this one was far too hoppy and bitter. Founders is a terrific brewery, but I wish they would scale back on the hops in their beers that are stylistically defined as being more malt-centric.

Ok, I know I rated this as perfection but I really have not met a Founders beer I don't love! They do their beers proper and Dirty Bastard is one of my favorites. I have had it both on tap and in the bottle and loved it equally. I am planning a trip to Founders soon, looking forward to having it fresh!
