We love a well-balanced brown ale. Especially a brown ale of the hazelnut coffee persuasion. Case in point: Frangelic Mountain Brown. Initially brewed and released in bottles in 2012, this deliciously sweet and nutty coffee brown ale quickly became a favorite amongst beer fans and inspired us to continue pushing the coffee and beer envelope. Turns out your new favorite coffee drink is a beer.

Pours dark brown with a slight head that quickly thins. Aroma is slight sweet coffee, no malt. (And no hazelnut-iness.)

Taste is predominantly the hazelnut/ frangelico. Marshmellow, then yesterday's coffee, some plum, some anise and Valentine's chocolate. Coffee underneath is bitter, dark unsweet chocolate, and bitterness. 36 IBU seems unnatural, and emphasized by that sh**ty coffee. Boozy without being hot.

Feels like it's a all a little too much (hey we did an adjunct!) and much less balanced than the Sumatra Mountain Brown, a much better coffee brown. Body is all right, man the frangelico just overpowers the rest of it.

Pours a dark, dark brown. Completely opaque but still on the thin side in keeping with it being a brown ale. One to two finger head dissipates until just a thin layer of velvety foam covers the beer. That last thin layer lingers for a long time. The aroma is really where this one shines. The aroma is absolutely dominated by a bright hazelnut coffee aroma - wake up and smell the coffee indeed! I honestly don't get much else underneath that coffee aroma, even as it warms.

Taste follows the nose with a nice robust coffee note up front with notes of hazelnut coming through. This tastes like black coffee that was roasted with hazelnut rather than coffee with say hazelnut creamer in it - and for that reason I love it. It keeps it from getting overly sweet even though its got that hazelnut in it. Again, the flavor profile is really dominated by the coffee and hazelnut - with this being a brown ale, I suspect they were going for the dominant coffee flavor. That being said there are some more subtle notes of brown sugar, cinnamon and roasty notes (from the coffee not the malt) giving way to some mild bitterness on the back end. Feel is thin, even for a brown ale, but in that sense it just makes it even more coffee-like. Moderate carbonation.

Overall this is one of those beers that if you love coffee - its great - especially if you like your coffee black. But, if you don't like coffee, well there isn't much in this beer that is going to do it for you.

Ick. I lke strong brown ales, but this was overburdened with face hazelnut coffee flavor. Didn't sit well as I drank it and didn't do much better with is the next morning. Founders is usually good with such things, but this didn't do it for me.

After being less than impressed with their underground mountain brown when I first had it, I’ve never really sought out anything else in this series. However, I am a sucker for hazelnut so I had to pick this up when I saw it

Pours a very dark brown with some particulate floating about and a small finger of off white head that quickly fades to a thin ring and leaves minimal lacing

Wow, the hazelnut comes through hard in the aroma. Tons of rich hazelnut, vanilla, roasty coffee, chocolate malts, and a hint of dark dried fruits. I’m quite impressed so far

Up front on the sip, I get more of a roasted malt vibe than any adjuncts present, just solid brown ale with extra sweetness. These sweeter tendencies are dialed up on the swallow, with the hazelnut being dosed pretty hard along with coffee, chocolate, caramel, and a hint of peanut butter

Full bodied but still light enough to pound, the gentle carbonation helps this one go down very smooth and leaves behind a mostly dry and sweet finish

I’ll be damned, this was actually really good! Founders very rarely disappoints, so I probably shouldn’t have been avoiding this series for just one bad experience. Oh well, you live and you learn. Now I’m off to find the others
