Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Mosaic Promise showcases two unique ingredients: Mosaic hops and Golden Promise malt. The versatility of the hop’s pleasing aroma and flavor characteristics and the traditional barley’s depth of flavor comprise this clean, rich, golden beer. We can brew complex beers with the best of them, but we recognize that there is also beauty in simplicity.

Great, sessionable single-hop. I often really enjoy single-hop/single-malt efforts for their academic or illustrative qualities—not unlike single-varietal wines, they isolate certain flavors, thus allowing us better hone our understanding of how these elements function in their best expressions: blends. But just like a really excellent Viognier may press up against that notion, presenting a wine whose best expression would be deterred by any additional-grape adulteration, Founders has produced a single-hop/single-malt that doesn't really seem like it needs tinkering or blending.

My one complaint would be that the aromatics, while nice, are fairly muted: I have to draw deep to get much of anything on the nose, though there are some nice semi-sweet floral notes hanging back. The head is likewise minimal, but there's a nice medium effervescence to buoy the really nice copper-golden turbidity. Smooth on the palate, clean-finishing, fresh-tasting: it's just a really nice session APA, with just enough florid bitterness, good mild grapefruit and kumquat notes, restrained bready sweetness, and a touch of bite.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip. Cool bottle artwork.

L: Clear light golden pour. Thick foamy white head... great lacing.

S: Light grains and fruity hops. Citrus, melon, and herbal.

T/F: Follows the nose... cracked grains... tropical fruit, summer melon, and lemony citrus hops. Moderate bitterness.... a little astringent/medicinal. The finish is lemongrass and citrus rind.

O: Solid flavor and bitterness... crushable ABV, and well-crafted. A solid member of Founders lineup.

All right APA but nothing fancy. The mosaic shows a profile as usual with tropical fruits and citrus mostly. The malt base is alright. All in all it's nice for a session ale but it lacks a bit of character

Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Cigar City snifter glass.

A: Slightly hazy light gold. About ½” of foamy white head with decent retention on top of a good amount of visible carbonation.

S: Light citrus, lemons and tangerines, and grassy hops with a touch of dankness. Light cracker malts. Not a huge aroma but appealing in a clean and hop-dominated way.

T: Dank, tropical fruits, citrus rind and melon hops. Light cracker malts mostly stay out of the way. A touch of grapefruit flesh on the back end, and it finishes with more melon and dankness with moderate bitterness.

M: The body is a touch on the light side for style. A good amount of fine carbonation, and the alcohol is well-hidden.

O: Enjoyable, and a solid shelf offering for sure. I get no evidence of the barley in the malt bill that's claimed on the label. Maybe nothing I'd go on a hunt for, but I'll gladly drink the others in the fridge.
