Brewed by:
Founders Brewing Company
Michigan, United States

Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Mosaic Promise showcases two unique ingredients: Mosaic hops and Golden Promise malt. The versatility of the hop’s pleasing aroma and flavor characteristics and the traditional barley’s depth of flavor comprise this clean, rich, golden beer. We can brew complex beers with the best of them, but we recognize that there is also beauty in simplicity.

Golden and slightly hazy, but most notably a ton of sediment floating within. Moderate carbonation, and three fingers of off white head.

Smells of pine and citrus, oranges and blueberries. Lemon and pepper, with hints of children's aspirin.

Citrus orange, big dankness, biscuit and blueberries, and unripe strawberries. A deep and tongue coating bitterness.

Light and crisp body, with a resinous, slightly sticky feel. Moderate to low carbonation.

Got at LCBO, drinking in Muskoka, Dec 6th, 2017. Excellent APA.

Pours golden which would be transparent save the fine uniform sediment. There is a small overly active head which fades rather quickly. Little lacing during drinking. Aroma is mild hops with some malt & hints of macrolager metallic. Taste offers a little hop but you really need to keep it on your tongue to even taste it. There is some citrus & maybe melon, then a bit of grassy but it's all rather bland & mixed with a metallic lageresque bland flavouring. Disappointing. I'm often a fan of IPAs which use Mosaic & with Founders on the label I was hoping for a nicer beer.

355 mL bottle from a six-pack purchased at the LCBO; best before June 5 2018 and served slightly chilled.

Pours pale gold in colour, with a sediment-flecked body that contributes to its rather hazy complexion. One finger of loose, foamy white head wilts within 90 seconds, giving rise to a bubbly collar and a modest ring of delicate lacing. Visually unimpressive by pale ale standards, but fortunately its nose was able to immediately regain my interest - quite fruity, with notes of orange and grapefruit alongside hints of pineapple, mango, grassy hay and floral hops. The malt backing is comparatively quite faint - gritty, wheaty grains are all I'm able to discern amidst the cacophony of Mosaic hop goodness.

Nothing exciting, but quite tasty anyhow. Clean, grainy pale malts and wheat husk occupy a background role, while the Mosaic fills up the remainder of the profile. I'm noting orange, lemon peel and grapefruit pithiness, with light suggestions of pineapple and papaya coming through mid-sip. The back end is where the grassy, floral aspects of the Mosaic hops begin to assert themselves, providing a mild bitterness which precedes an immaculately clean, decidedly dry aftertaste. Light in body, with middling carbonation levels that impart a firm, crisp bite; feels prickly on the tongue, which helps to scrub the palate between sips. Extremely easy to knock back.

Final Grade: 4.08, an A-. Founders' Mosaic Promise is a pretty good pale ale, but I'd be lying if I were to claim that it holds up to the same (exceedingly high) standards set by most of their more well-known labels. Truth be told, this is probably the least-compelling Founders product I've tried to date - and yet, it's still a perfectly serviceable pale ale that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to other beer geeks. Like their All Day IPA, I doubt I'd go out of my way for more of this... but if it remains available in my neck of the woods, then I'm sure I'll return to it in the near future. Curious Ontario BAs who are still sitting on the fence would be well-advised to grab a sixer.

You know when I first scored a 6 pack of this stuff from Total Wine in Reno, I was kinda ho hum on it, it was good, but as someone who remembers how awesome beers like Harvest Ale and Double Trouble were back in the day, you can see how the bar was pretty high for Founders. But then I got a 15 pack of cans from my supermarket (for $15) in Reno, and the beer was much better.

Pours a familiar yellow color with a thin white head 1/3". Looks ordinary, but professional. Aroma drops Mosaic. Its not the heaviest use of Mosaic, but a little of that hop goes a long way.

Taste is where it excels, its a nice golden promise smash beer (single malt single hop) light body paired effortlessly with the Mosaic hop, its that simple and better for it. I think its tough to make something as dry in body when you pair a juicy Mosaic hop with it. Where this beer really excels is that it is available at the grocery store for $1/12 oz can, and its fresh (was like 4 weeks old when purchased). You can drink this in mass quantities, an essential beer if you like to do things outdoors. Total daily banger, belongs in that upper echelon of beers that are first tier and widely available. SNPA, Lindeman's Cuvee Rene Series, CW -bals,Hottenroth. . . that kind of brethren, you buy it a lot for many years or even decades at a time.

Look: It pours light golden with a white head that has moderate head retention.

Smell: It has a combination of tropical and stone fruit. There is a bit of a bready background.

Taste: The flavors are full of tropical fruit flavors. The most prominent are pineapple and mango. There are low background flavors of bread.

Feel: It has a moderate body and is fairly well carbonated.

Overall, this is a beer that is balanced towards the tropical flavors with a bit of sweetness to it and low background notes of bread.

My favorite beer. Keep coming back to it. Simple and beautiful. Lovely citrus aroma, hoppy but not overpowering. Its beauty is in its simplicity - simple flavors and aromas. Nothing hits you over the head and yet it is very distinct. Beyond satisfying, it is rewarding.

Had this on tap at Ulysses in Wilmington, DE. Enjoyed it with my meal. Found it easy to drink. Light orange and a little cloudy. Nice mix of hoppy and malty taste. Bought myself a 15 pack of cans when I saw it this week and have been enjoying them. Nice session beer in my opinion. Taste is not overpowering but is slightly citrus and hoppy. This is one I like.
