We made a call here because I wanted a change from the usual Kolsch outlets in Koln, and I wanted to try the famous Paulaner Salvator.

I must admit I left very disappointed and feeling like I had wasted my money.

The place looks nice, in a nice little building near the waterfront with the bar nicely set in the middle.

We came only for a drink, because we ate earlier at the brilliant Paffgen Brewery. I looked at the menu, and my Fiancee & I both ordered Dunkels. We received a copper coloured beer with a strange aroma and a slighly off/foul taste. I forced about 3 quarters of that down then called the women serving behind the bar over. She said it was a dunkel although I doubted it. I then asked for a change - and ordered a Salvator. To my amazement the same beer turned up. I was looked at in a funny way when I tried to explain that a Dunkel & the Salvator were supposed to be different beers. They finally exhanged it for a Gaffel Kolsch, which was listed on the menu as 0.2cl for 1.50 Euros. However when I got the bill they told me it was 2.50 - it turned out the Kolsch was 0.3cl, even though not listed on the menu like that.

Basically the place was a farce compared to some of the brilliant Kolsch houses around the city. It lets down the franchise. If you go there stick to Kolsch or the Helles as thats all people seemed to be drinking.

This Hotel/Bar is located just out of the main tourist area, about 250 yards south of the Deutzer Bridge, facing the river, across the road from the modern Maritim Hotel complex. Just follow the Rhine promenade footpath under the bridge and keep looking right until you see a cut through to the road almost opposite the rear of the Martime Hotel complex, and well before you get to the Chocolate Museum.

If you need a change from the wonderful Kolsche, then here you can have a half litre of the excellent Paulaner Hefe Weiss beer on tap, and also other beers from the Paulaner range. The Kolsche served is from Gaffel. The bar with outdoor terrace at the front is more typical German bar style with no special interior, but pleasant non-the-less. There is a large screen TV which is popular with the local sporting fans, so rather different atmosphere to the Kolsche bars in Cologne itself.

The food menu is fairly good, but not outstanding. Some English is spoken, but not by all staff!

If you want some variety to the beers you are having in Cologne, and enjoy the Paulaner Beers, then this is a good place to visit for a change.

The web page gives more details of the beers and food.
