The beer is dark brown (clouded probably), almost black, pours with a small beige head leaving little lacing. And some curtains.

The smell is dominated by heavily roasted aromas, coffee, bitter chocolate and some vanilla.

The taste is deep, sweet brown sugar and with strong chocolate, burnt toast.

Very low carbonation, soft but with a dry almost coarse finish..

A complex beer, but with rather small body.

330 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet. ABV is 7.0%. BB date 08.11.2013. Lumpy sediment in the bottle. Cloudy and very dark brown colour, moderate beige head. Pleasant aroma of chocolate, cocoa and mild coffee, hints of vanilla. The flavour is fresh and slightly fruity, fairly dry, again with notes of chocolate / cocoa, hints of vanilla and a whiff of smoke, moderate hops in the finish.

Enjoyed from the bomber in a snifter. This nice porter pours a deep dark muddy brown with a very nice head of light tan foam that subsides to a thick ring, thin layer, and light lacing. Nose of light licorice and coffee dances about subtle smoke, dark cocoa, and dark fruit. Flavors follow the nose with dark cocoa and smoked malts, light black berries in the middle, and light coffee with a touch of anise on the back. Mouth feel is lightly carbonated and coating with a lightly chalky smoked aftertaste but a touch thin. A solid brew from a brewer I am relatively new to.

Cheers

500ml bottle dated Nov. 2011 served in a snifter at about 53F.

A: The beer is dark mahogany in color and poured with almost no head. This soon reduced to abit of film and a thin ring, and left minimal lacing on the glass. Some ugly gelatinous sludge in the bottom of the bottle; but minor deduction given age of the bottle.

S: Strong aromas of roasted malts, dark chocolate, and dark baked bread, along with some hints of dark fruits and a suggestion of berries. Complex, unusual and rather appealing.

T: The taste is fairly similar to the smell, but with more dominance of dark roasted malts. Faint, and prefectly acceptable suggestion of some burnt grain. Hints of dark chocolate, smoke, sherry and coffee.

M: Medium-bodied. Hurt by a slight astringency and an overly low amount of carbonation.

O: This imperial porter is not real strong in terms of ABV, but packs a bold smell and taste that have nicely balanced and complex blends of aromatics and flavors.

Bottle from The Belmont Station's clearance rack for $4.99 instead of the usual $9.49.

While it is a very dark brown, this beer is essentially black when in a glass. A moderate head, choppy and tan, rises briefly before falling off. The nose is quite pleasant. A moderately sweet caramel-laced milk chocolate, this beer has some toffee along with a moderate roast. Quite rich while remaining moderately light an airy, like a nice ganache, there's some floral honey and a faint hop note. Quite nice

The palate opens medium-light in body with a very pleasant grainy bitterness, earthy and almost acrid, but just right to my palate. The grain character lingers thru the palate, persisting through the layers of honey, heather, caramel, chocolate and dark fruit. Less sweet than the nose would have you believe, this beer finishes with a rather excellent grainy bitterness. Dry, unsweetened cocoa is quite prominent as well and is at a level I'm really digging. Moderately carbonated and a level that complements the blend of creamy and bitter flavors, this beer is enjoyable on the palate. I wish I had a spiced ginger cookie to go with this. This beer is significantly better than the scores here would have you believe, and is definitely worthy.

Purchased from Portland's Belmont Station for $9.87. Poured from a 500ml bottle into a conic pint glass in high elevation Libby, Mont. Reviewed live.

A- Quarter-inch mocha head, extremely active. Dies very quickly. Tiny spots of lacing when agitated. Dark cocoa color, no clarity. Not a great looking beer.

S- Black strap molasses, toffee, some boozy notes and chocolate. Very sweet, almost cloyingly. Smells like cookie dough, actually.

T- Molasses, chocolate, toffee and bitter notes. Not bad.

M- Very light carbonation, light body and extremely wet.

O- Very disappointed with this beer. For the price I was expecting something much more appealing.

While this certainly fell short of my first 2 beers that night (KBS and Imperial Biscotti Break), I still enjoyed this a lot. Very distinct flavors, with a lot of bitterness, some spiciness, and an almost rye flavor. I had this before, but I didn't remember it being so spicy or roasty. But it was very appealing. Based on the reviews, the draft version must be far superior to bottle. I enjoyed this and will have again.

Quite possibly the worst take I have ever had on an Imperial porter.

A - Pour kind of thin for an Imperial porter. In the glass it has a dark ruby red color with a 1/2 inch of opaque colored head.

S - Smell has a decent amount of coffee, chocolate, and some roast. Maybe licorice but it's faint.

T - Omg wtf Sweden! First off it's very watery like they watered down the RIS to a 7% ABV. Second of all the roast is very minimal but I am getting this weird sort of herbal licorice taste and I shit you not the label describes it as a "salty licorice" I love some salty pretzels and even salty bacon/pork but salt on licorice? Horrible!

M - As I said before it drinks with a light/medium body, not chewy at all just water. Far from good.

Overall stay clear from this one it literally is a ½ Idjit since it taste like a watered down RIS.

Edit: OK I just checked the label and it was bottled in November 2011 so over a year old might be past it's prime for a Imperial porter like this. Still wtf it soured like milk.

Thanks to blutt59 for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a brownish color with a white head. The aroma features a lot of coffee and roasted malt, as well as some caramel and toffee. The flavor is similar, with the coffee and roasted malt standing out the most. There is also a noticeable amount of alcohol in the flavor. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Poured into a Saint Somewhere wine-style glass. Notches on label indicate it was bottled in November of 2011.

A- Pours a mostly opaque black color with no head, just a thin ring around the edge of the glass and barely any surface foam. Light specs of lacing.

S- Very powerful roast aroma with some booze driving it forward. Notes of espresso, charred nuts and rubbing alcohol.

T- Jarring flavor of intense roast that doesn't let up. Strong coffee taste along with more burnt nuts and a somewhat unpleasant flavor of rubber. Alcohol's toned down a bit compared to the aroma. Notes of raisin, molasses, oak and sherry.

M- Thick, creamy and not too dry. Low carbonation leaves a little to be desired.

O- Very different and very flavorful. If they hit the mark on what it's supposed to taste like, I find it to be satisfying but not much more than that. Certainly an attention-grabber.

Poured from the bottle into a a Chimay goblet.

Appearance: Pours a brown color with some light coming through. There is a half finger of off white head that goes away completely.

Smell: There is a mild roasty smell but honestly this is a bit boring. Not a whole lot going on here.

Taste: A bit more interesting then the smell. Roast with a light sweetness from the malt. Not much alcohol to be found at all. The finish is slightly roasty.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with fluffy carbonation and a slightly dry finish.

Overall: This is an alright porter, the roast is good, but there needs to be a bit more going on. I'd probably pass in the future.

Poured into standard pint glass a deep cola color with some deep ruby tint,a thinner off white head atop.Black licorice dominates the nose with a hint of bitter chocolate as well.Salty and licorice-like on the palate, almost to salty, the bottle doesnt say salt was added so Iam not sure where the heavy handed salt is coming from.Well its not bad but the salt flavors ar a little overwhelming in my mind, and honestly a litle strange.
