Minipivovar U Medvídků "U Medvidku 1466"
on tap @ Minipivovar U Medvídků

Notes: I thought I was going to have to buy a bottle of this until the guy next to me ordered it. It's not on tap at the front bar, they have to bring it from the back. Mahogany body beneath a frothy tan head. Head retention and lacing are limited. Aromas of caramel, dark fruit, and honey liquor. The flavor is rich, and fairly sweet but cut by the alcohol to finish fairly dry. Notes of plum, berries, raisin, golden and dark caramel, almond, cherry. Medium-full body with a moderate carbonation. Alcohol is fairly well cloaked, and only delivers enough presence to balance it. I wish I had gotten a bottle of this to sit down with in a quiet room rather than having had it in a crowded noisy bar.

So, after a lot of site-seeing in Prague, and a solid meal at U Tří růží, Alewife and I stopped in here, U Medvídků, for a nightcap (03OCT13).

We opted to splurge a bit and try this beer, at 133CZK each (~$7.45). We were well below budget, so wtf...! The stubby, swing-top bottles came with matching glassware, and we dug in. It was a deep, opaque chesnut/mahogany brew. Head was thin and wispy, off-white, mostly a rimmer. Some lace was left here and there. Nose sent off some dark fruit and light sweetness. It led me to believe that this would be one rich bier. Body was medium-plus, and it was silky smooth on the tongue.

It was, indeed, a rich, smooth, creamy libation. Had a bit of sweetness and then a healthy dose of dark fruits, like raisins, dates and currants. I could feel the warmth of this one going down. Though a bit syrupy, it was a lovely, sherry-like aperitif. We both ended up having a second bottle! Prosit!!

Enjoyed on-tap @ the Minipivovar U Medvídků in Prague, CZ for 111,- Kč. Tapped from a Tap in the back of the Brewpub into a 0,3 L X Beer 33 Tulip Glass.

Aroma- Has one of the strongest boozy and rich aromas possibly. Definitely has some dark fruits or plums evident in here but the alcohol aroma takes ALL of it over.

Appearance- Received with a 2.5 finger head that stays the entire time! Awesome retention! The body is a deep brown color with 0% clarity. There are definitely legs on this brew! Leaves the coolest and thickest lacing on the glass as well. Took a picture at almost every sip of this brew to show the lace progressing at each drink.

Flavor- Very sweet with a caramel flavor, rich, and malty throughout the drink. The alcohol overpowers the taste again but has a maple syrup/strong caramel taste that makes the drink at least interesting (without this, it would just simply be a mixed bourbon drink).

Mouthfeel- Full Bodied, Low Carbonation, and has an alcohol strength like no other!

Overall Impression- While ordering this "Euro Strong Lager" I enjoyed it greatly but would argue that this is no Lager at all! Too strong and boozy with almost a Barleywine mouthfeel and many other styles (American Brown, Eisbock, etc.) put together. I'm glad I tried something of their specialty but would like to ask a brewmaster here (next time of course) what this beer entails and what style it is.

appearance: deep dark brown, lackig had retention

smell: semlls sweet, cherry, maybe a tad sour.

taste: whoa, very complex lager but not in a good way. cherry flavor, heavy alcohol kick, not well hidden, way too much sweetness.

mouthfeel: medium bodied

drinkability: needs work. its not the strongest beer in the worl either as claims. too sweet and boozy.

Bottle at U Medvídků, Prague, Czech Republic

A: The beer is cloudy amber in color and poured with a thin, off-white head. No carbonation is visible.
S: There are aromas of cherries, oak and sweet malts in the nose.
T: The taste is very complex and has flavors of almonds, cherries, honey and oak.
M: It feels full-bodied and very thick on the palate with a low amount of carbonation.
D: The alcohol is completely hidden from both the smell and taste, which make this beer go down rather easily. However, it definitely needs to be sipped given its strength.
