There has to be a beer in the world which is the worst of the worst. I have tasted several beers but this one is the worst i ever had.

It's much too strong and the beer is very sticky because of the great amount of sugar in it.

There was a bit too much carbonation because the beer came out strong after i had opened the bottle. The beer looks allright in the glass but then the first sip... This is no beer for me.

After three sips i have poured the beer in the toilet (and that is something i will not do very fast)

Minipivovar U Medvídků "U Medvidku 1466"
on tap @ Minipivovar U Medvídků

Notes: I thought I was going to have to buy a bottle of this until the guy next to me ordered it. It's not on tap at the front bar, they have to bring it from the back. Mahogany body beneath a frothy tan head. Head retention and lacing are limited. Aromas of caramel, dark fruit, and honey liquor. The flavor is rich, and fairly sweet but cut by the alcohol to finish fairly dry. Notes of plum, berries, raisin, golden and dark caramel, almond, cherry. Medium-full body with a moderate carbonation. Alcohol is fairly well cloaked, and only delivers enough presence to balance it. I wish I had gotten a bottle of this to sit down with in a quiet room rather than having had it in a crowded noisy bar.

on-tap at the brewpub in Praha

coaster notes

appearance: short-pour, garnet-mahogany body, fizzy beige head

smell: very sweet - similar to an unrefined port, caramelized sugars, cherry

taste: a czech beer at 13%? Yeah, i'll have that please. I naturally expected this to be awful as it just isnt what the czechs do, but i was pleasantly surprised to find a fairly drinkable and very interesting elixir. It's boozy - think the cheapest port on the dessert menu. A light tartness from the cherry comes through, sweet sugars, molasses

mouthfeel: interesting - overly sweet

drinkability: fine

Bottle at U Medvídků, Prague, Czech Republic

A: The beer is cloudy amber in color and poured with a thin, off-white head. No carbonation is visible.
S: There are aromas of cherries, oak and sweet malts in the nose.
T: The taste is very complex and has flavors of almonds, cherries, honey and oak.
M: It feels full-bodied and very thick on the palate with a low amount of carbonation.
D: The alcohol is completely hidden from both the smell and taste, which make this beer go down rather easily. However, it definitely needs to be sipped given its strength.

Brown 33cl flip-top bottle with a freshness date of 31st Oct 2009, drank and reviewed on 21st July 2009. Obtained from the brew-pub while on a boozy trip to Prague.

Poured carefully into a Hoegaarden Grand Cru branded tulip glass.

Looked like a redish stout or porter, not fully black, more a deep ruby red colour. Dense and misty, the tan head that arrived at first soon left leaving just a thin collar.

Smells like a sour cherry beer (Rodenbach wise), a sweetness came as the beer warmed and after I'd tasted it.

The sweetness didn't wait for any warmth in the taste, it hits you straight away, very un-Rodenbach like in taste, although I've heard they have sweetened it now. I've had a few rearly strong lager based beers over the years and this one isn't as sweet as some, but never-the-less it isn't a beer for those that don't have a sweet tooth.

The aftertaste is boarding on sickly, the rich sweetness stays a little to long in the mouth. I can see why other reviewers have complained about the sweet nature of the beer and the lack of an alcohol feel. The sweetness certainly hides the alcohol very well, but I wouldn't want to drive a car, even after only one!

Agree with everyone else who has reviewed this beer, it is way too sweet and, i believe, not as strong as they claim it to be. It's as though it did not attenuate all the way. The advertise it as "the strongest lager in the world". Worth a sip but not much more.

A: Pours a light golden brown from the bottle. Pretty much what I was expecting. Not a ton of head, but actually more than I was expecting for 12.6%. More on that later. The head dissipated fairly quickly and left little lacing behind.

S: Here's where things got weird. My first whiff of this told me that something was up. There was a very distinct aroma that I couldn't quite place, even when it was still pretty cold. As I thought about it some more, I came to think that it was a bit like old cream. Not soured, exactly. Just old. At this point I became suspicious of a contamination. There was no barnyard funk, but there was definitely something odd going on. I honestly couldn't pick up any other aromas over this one.

T: My girlfriend and I had the same thought with our first sip of this: lambic. There was an unmistakable tartness in the back of the mouth. Bordering on fruity, but not in an estery sort of way. Again, no barnyard funk. Just tart. And weird. Maybe lactobacillus? And very, very sweet. This thing is an absolute sugar bomb. I also couldn't really taste any alcohol. Now, I've had a lot of high gravity beers, of all different varieties. And granted, some of them hide the booze better than others. But none hide it this well. I don't see how this could possibly be 12.6%.

M: Syrupy thick, coating. And again, no sign of the booze. Even with a beer that disguises it well (and has a ton of sugar) you're still going to get a warm feeling in your mouth, or at least in your stomach. Nothing here. I'd be surprised if this is actually over 8%.

D: Any more than a sip is too much. This beer is almost certainly underattenuated and is likely contaminated with wild yeast and/or bacteria.

In conclusion: For once, it's safe to ignore your curiosity and get something less "interesting." Their Oldgott is actually quite good, and is 1/3 the price. Or go somewhere else and get 5 decent beers for the price of this one.

This was my "dessert" at the U Medvídků. Oddly, it was not available on-tap, only in bottle.

Pours a ruby-mahogany; light shines through on the edge. Rich, but modest, head that lasts throughout the tasting.

Sweet aroma, similar to a superior sherry or port. Lots of cherry and other berry notes.

Simply said, this passes as a barley wine. Thick and chewy, but has good carbonation to prevent coyness. Lots of oak, berry and vanilla.

Perhaps the most unusual beer I had in Prague--worth walking an extra kilometer to try. One of the great beers.

Enjoyed on-tap @ the Minipivovar U Medvídků in Prague, CZ for 111,- Kč. Tapped from a Tap in the back of the Brewpub into a 0,3 L X Beer 33 Tulip Glass.

Aroma- Has one of the strongest boozy and rich aromas possibly. Definitely has some dark fruits or plums evident in here but the alcohol aroma takes ALL of it over.

Appearance- Received with a 2.5 finger head that stays the entire time! Awesome retention! The body is a deep brown color with 0% clarity. There are definitely legs on this brew! Leaves the coolest and thickest lacing on the glass as well. Took a picture at almost every sip of this brew to show the lace progressing at each drink.

Flavor- Very sweet with a caramel flavor, rich, and malty throughout the drink. The alcohol overpowers the taste again but has a maple syrup/strong caramel taste that makes the drink at least interesting (without this, it would just simply be a mixed bourbon drink).

Mouthfeel- Full Bodied, Low Carbonation, and has an alcohol strength like no other!

Overall Impression- While ordering this "Euro Strong Lager" I enjoyed it greatly but would argue that this is no Lager at all! Too strong and boozy with almost a Barleywine mouthfeel and many other styles (American Brown, Eisbock, etc.) put together. I'm glad I tried something of their specialty but would like to ask a brewmaster here (next time of course) what this beer entails and what style it is.
