Review: Can of Jelen Svetlo Pivo: ABV: : 5%

My introduction to Serbian lager

On pour we get a lovely clear golden colour, with a nice frothy white head forming, bubbling along, good retention.
Some great carbonation and a decent head, this really is a good looking beer
Some lacing. Excellent on view…..

Smell was very slight, couldn’t really tell you much about it as it was so faint, nothing!…….

Taste: Don’t believe it, absolutely NO TASTE!! No bitterness, no taste of the malts or hops, nothing. Quite amazing really. Very watery with no character
Its definitely smooth and light, but has a very flat taste. Just bang, nothing. What a poor excuse for a beer. Basically mineral water with minute traces of alcohol, I guess!

Drank this more than I wanted to last time I was in Serbia - it was okay as far as mass-produced beer, but you literally cannot avoid it. The taste is really uniform and to be honest pretty bland and tiresome quickly. It'll get the job done, but if you're eating in Serbia and want a drink ask for the house wine or rakija (domestic brandy, if you're up to it); those will always be preferable. Staroprommen or Erdinger are also usually available, and are significantly better.

500ml Can in Bar Pausa Caffé, Trieste, Italy (€2):
This one was a terrible introduction to Serbian beer, definitely one of the worst lagers I've tried in a while & not one that I could recommend. There was way too much skunk showing & the taste lacked on pretty much everything, the beer was watery & bland making it a real struggle to finish despite the Italian sun making me thirsty; the fact that it was my first Serbian beer was the only positive I took from this one.

Not what I expected,...

A- nice retention and seafoam lace.

S- sweet malt backbone.

T- has a nice malty backbone.

M- balanced, overcarbonated, smooth

D- Very easy to drink. and it looks like many other "powder" beers who are produced without real and natural grain

A: Light golden, typical euro lager/pilsner style. White foam, nothing remarkable about the foam.

S: Little sweet pale malt.

T: Watery, sweetnes. Little white bread. No aftertaste at all.

O: Unintressting, taste to little to drink again (if I ever will se this again).

pours a straw to golden liquid, not very firm head

nose: fruity, tainted with some quite aggressive artifificial notes

palate: almonds, rose hip, peanuts
starts a bit bitter, then turns sweet and ends bitter again

this is a very average lager - perhaps best drunk in the country of origin or by the serbian diaspora around the world

Logged on in Nis, Serbia where I am eating a nice chicken dish with the only beer on the menu, Jelen.

Poured from the 500mL bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pretty typical - gold and pale. Nothing too interesting here. Head doesn't last very long, but then again that's typical as well.

S: Grainy.

T: Watery and kind of twangy. Hint of grain and maybe something vegetal. Not a fan of this beer.

A big avoid from me. Another run of the mill eastern european lager
