I write this from memory - about my first visit (95 I think) many, many years ago, and not subsequent ones. Why?, well because what the "virgin" visitor will experience when they go for the first time - will be more akin to this, rather than my later visits. My first time, I visited with 3 friends, we had done our homework and read in advance that this bar sold 800 beers, yes 800 !! We all had our preconceived ideas about this "Beer Palace" - and ALL 100% Wrong as it turned out. People still do not believe me when I tell them about this street corner Cafe. It is indeed - quite literally - a one-room bar, on er... a street corner. In fact, we walked past it the first time, Twice !!!! Upon entering, we were still convinced we were in the wrong place. It looked like it had not been cleaned in years, there were floaties in the air, never mind the beer. Huge fluffy brown clumps of dust that had accumulated over many, many years (decades) clung for "dear life" to bottles and on other display items, it looked like brown snow just about to Avalanche. But it was quiet, we made ourselves at home and the waiter (singular) was very chatty. It did have many, many beers - several hundred for certain - we never substanciated the rumor of 800, but I would not bet against it. The waiter was a like a human walking version of BeerAdvocate.com. It was all in his head, and he dissappeared to the Cellar every time, for hours it seemed sometimes, to obtain the beers. I have had several Rare Beers here over the years. No Food (!!?). "Mother Lambics in St. Gilles" is an unspoilt, basic but charismatic, totally ideosyncratic GEM that you will never forget, and probably walk past the first time - I guarantee it.

Tim Webbs Guide describes this place very well in his latest Guide and finishes with these words. "Remember this is an institution, so it doesn't have to try too hard". Uniquely Belgium.

Visited with my wife on a recent trip to Brussels and Munich. Decided to give this place a shot even though we had a terrible experience at the other location, and we were glad we did.

Tried the following:
Moor Beer Amoor - English Porter (draft)
Det Lille Bryggeri Bloody Pale Ale (draft)
Cantillon Cuvée Moeder Lambic Kriek (cask)
No Science Sabotage IPA (draft)

Beers ranged from above average to extraordinary and I was surprised to find a Cantillon beer on cask. Tap selection was the best that I came across in Brussels. My wife liked her wines. Had the Trio de Fromages plate to split; it was superb.

Standard beer bar atmosphere; music volume still allowed for good conversation. We enjoyed our booth to the side of the bar.

Service was strong as our drinks and cheese plate arrived quickly. We had previously met the bartender at Dynamo two nights before and he was happy to engage with us again.

Our overall experience was great, and we would come here regularly if we lived in the area.

Very nearly my ideal 'neighborhood bar,' (if only I lived in Brussels). Terrific staff. Amazing Tap list. and the BEST BOTTLE LIST that I have ever encountered. Sunday nights they do Raclette in the basement - each table gets their own. Pretty amazing experience. And again, kudos to the staff who are a delight!

We attended a special event at the cellar bar here during Toer de Geuze 2019. Jean was an extremely gracious host, and hung out afterwards chatting with everybody. Some good news is they are working on a new beer focused restaurant, hoping to open later this year.

They have a close relationship with Cantillon, and there are always interesting options available here. BLIPA & Mourvedre drafts and more bottles, currently. It's smaller than the other location, but had a more relaxed vibe as well. Really cool vintage bottle decor above the service bar, and exposed brick around the room, large windows open to the street and patio.

It's further out from the city center, but always worth a visit for the unique beer list, and also close to Dynamo. We walked from Aux Vieux Spighten Duivel in Jette, about 1.3 mi.

My favorite of the two Moeder locations, it is much smaller and quieter in a much more laid-back area of the city. I tried to order a Hommage bottle, which was written on the chalkboard, but the server claimed to not be able to find one. This was a common theme throughout my time in Belgium. Either blackboards are infrequently updated or some bottles are only selectively available. Anyway, wasn't too disappointed as they had more than enough of interest, including St. Gilloise on tap and an extensive lambic bottle list. I also thought the non-lambic draft list was better here than at Fontainas, but that is probably a fluid situation. Favorite bar I found in Brussels.

Moeder Lambic has been a beer bar for 25 years, changing hands a few times over the years. Currently it is owned by Jean Hummler and since 2006 has been increasingly devoted to craft beers and lambics in particular. Jean has close ties with many of the local craft and small brewers, even with some brewers in Italy, Spain and the US. Last time we were there, Jean Van Roy from Cantillon stopped by with a hand delivered shipment. This is THE place to be for serious beer geeks in Brussels. They have a newer separate location near the city center as well.

We ended up in the brick and old wood lined basement for a special tasting with Jean. There is a large oaken table and bench style chairs in the center of this dimly lit cave. The walls around you are lined with hundreds of well organized bottles of mostly Belgian beers. No Stella here my friends! The dripping of distant water, the flap of cobwebs in the limited breeze, all added to the ambiance of something unique and special we were to embark upon.

Without trying to make anyone jealous, we tried a slew of insane sour beers that night including many rare Cantillon bottles. All of those are available upstairs at the bar as well.

Went to this bar on my recent trip to Brussels. We were coming back from a day trip to Westvleteren/Bruges and walked down to this place from our hotel in St. Gilles. So glad we did.

I arrived at around 10:30 and wanted to dig in to some food. We got some cheese, a cold sausage and some bread. All of it was excellent and complemented the beer quite well.

The beer selection was small, but outstanding. I had two beers that were Moeder exclusives, a Kriek from Cantillon and a De La Senne collaboration. Both were excellent.

The atmosphere was small, but cozy. The bar has a ton of inviting wood. There were stacks of Belgian comics behind our table that kept us entertained. The bar played 90's American rock, which turned into an impromptu karaoke event for the drunk Europeans at the table next to us. Overall, a fantastic atmosphere for a corner tavern in a suburb.

If I go back to Brussels, I'll definitely head back to the Moeder Lambic in St. Gilles. Excellent natural beer in a laid back and inviting environment. Hard to ask for more.
