Update 5/22 They always tell me that they are going to order something that I request and give me a day that it will be in and oftern times they don't follow through. Lowered the service .5 pt for this. Still the best place to get beer in Morganton.

Update 1/27/06
The last time I reviewed this place was when he was getting started. This place has improved signifigantly in two areas. First the selection has improved to what I would consider an average beer store. Second the prices on some of the beers are real bargins. So I update my beerfly and improved the scores on selection and prices.

First of all let me state that this is not the kind of place you plan road trips too. But if you are in the area you can find quality beer here. In fact it's the only place to find quality beer in the area. This is a Tobacco 1st store, wine 2nd, herbal paraphenalia(sp)3rd, macro swill 4th and they just happen to carry some craft beer too. One wall is beer coolers. This is mostly yellow, fizzy macro. They are some Sweetwater, Carolina, and Sierra Nevada beers in it, along with some Ole Hickory Brewery mini kegs. They have some Samuel Smiths on a shelf. Most of the craft beer is in a walk in cooler in the back of the store. Some Belgium Styles. Hinnepinn, Duval, Three Philosophers, Chimay. Also the complete line of Highland. Lots of Flying Dog, Dogfish Head, Harpoon. Many micros in the cooler. The owner is nice, always willing to help and chat, but not that knowledgable. When you walk in he points to the Belgiums and says, "Here's our high octane stuff" Everytime! The prices are a little high on some of the beers. This dude basically has a monopoly on the craft beer scene in Burke Co.

I've visited this place a couple of times, with my most recent visit on 10-17-05. If you live in Burke or Caldwell counties this place is pretty much the only place to get any type of craft beer. The grocery stores in this area only carry macros, maybe Sierra Nevada PA and probably Sam Adams lager. On my last visit, a cooler in the back had most of the craft beers. I did notice a display up front that had most of the Sam Smith beers. I saw Hopdevil, Anderson Valley Eye of the Hawk and IPA, Ommegang, Hennepin, Three Philosopers, Duvel, Marsedous 8, Spaten Oktoberfest and Optimator(Yay!) in the cooler. The prices were very reasonable for what they had. Actually, the prices were lower than either Peabodys or Brawleys. Service was good. The owner says that he plans on carrying more craft beer as he has been selling quite a bit of it. That's good news for BA's in the predominantly redneck foothills of NC.

If you live in Morganton this is pretty much your only choice for micro's. Chad, the owner, is getting new stuff in constantly. He is new to the micro world but is willing to listen to suggestions about which beers to carry. Mostly the Tobacco Barn is what the name implies, tobacco. But he has the only worthwhile selection of micro's in town. I will be going back to this place. I don't know exaclty how many kinds I saw yesterday but I think there had to be at least 25 kinds. Around here that is impressive. I must give Chad a thumbs up. I hope his business does well.
