AMAZING selection of local Belgium and hard to find regional bier. Friendly staff and very eclectic decorations on the inside, from floor to ceiling all you see is beer ephemera. A must see for any enthusiast.

They have a decent-ish selection, but they're egregiously overpriced. If Gent weren't so deprived of good watering holes (I guess deprived when compared to cities like Brussels, Antwerp, or Bruges) this place would have probably gotten a two star from me instead of three.

Service is quick and snappy, as expected from Belgium, and the only food on the menu is a giant platter of cheese and sausage. I definitely don't recommend trying to finish it if you're on your own.

Had multiple beers over the course of a few hours, with the highlight beingthe yard of Pawel kwak. Not for the standard of the beer but for the experience it delivered, and the ceremony of handing over a shoe as collateral for the glass and holder. Atmosphere was carefree and fun and as a cage decends full of shoes the bell rings and you know another yard is being served. Selection was overwhelming and excellent. Will return again.

Awesome selection. Awesome location. Warmed up with a St. Bernardus Abbot 8 then proceeded to the Dulle Griet speciality: a yard of Pawel Kwak. Patrons must give up a shoe to rent the Kwak setup. Also must sit inside for the Kwak. On another visit had Kasteel a Rouge while wife had a Kriek and buddy had a Westmalle. We had a salami and cheese plate, standard fare. Nice to sit outside and people watch in the Friday Market square. Gent is a beautiful city that I hope to visit again. I would definitely visit Dulle Griet again (and again).

An old beer bar in the heart of the city, not far from Mad Meg the enormous red painted cannon that is a city landmark. They had a beer list of over 250 options and were open late! They had a lot of sours and I ended up trying the Boon Marriage Parfait Geueze which was quite tart and refreshing--and lower in alcohol. A large group of folks from Bristol, UK were crammed into the booth next to us and we talked a bit about beers (of course!) We watched each of them get the special house beer Max of the House, served in a yard glass (think Kwak glass but three times bigger). Since so many of these glasses used to go missing the bar takes one of your shoes as collateral for missing or broken glasses. So watching a rowdy group of Brits all wearing one shoe and trying not to spill from these tall glasses was quite a treat!

Located right at Ghent's "Friday Market", but unfortunately I was here on a Tuesday. Good medieval scenery around the market, and following that are lots of tourists like myself. Many tables of De Dulle Griet are available on the sidewalk, and is (obviously) additional seating inside the dark lit bar.

The beer selection is large, with about 250 selection. Several beers pouring from the tap (westmalle Dubble, La Chouffe), many more fom the bottle (Tongerlo, Rochefort, Dupont, Silly), and most are served with their own glass. The two biggest problems regarding Dulle Griet regard the fact that there are no beer menus if you're sitting outside (you must go inside), and you have to pour the beer into the glass on your own. That said, the prices are competitive, and it's a bar that I wouldn't reject during a future visit to Ghent.

Just a few short steps from the main town square in Gent, this uniquely traditional Belgian beer-focused bar sits promptly on the cobblestone street-scape at center point along the narrow block, and highlighted by a bright yellow neon that denotes the bar. Just up a few steps and into the space, a long narrow bar that's cluttered with glassware, beer propaganda, trinkets, and literature greets with a somewhat claustrophobic yet oddly comfortable entry.

The table that fronts the storefront window was available with a hodge podge of chairs and benches. As the space was surprisingly patronized on this lazy Tuesday night, the quest for the rare leather-backed beer menu was in short order. A gaze across the main room reveals a tall and narrow configuration with exposed beams and rafters, dusted decoration that includes flags, paintings, animal heads, and figurines in the quirky charm that only the Belgians can sell as whimsy and wonderment.

The scarce menus look like they've been uncovered from an archaeological dig with its dusty leather wrap and page inserts that show labels of advertised beers rather than a description. A request for the Alexander Rodenbach was met with denial as several of the most rare advertised items on the menu were no longer available- I have a feeling that they don't update their menu often. But the Westsmalle Tripel and Boon Oude Gueze were spot on and delivered in proper glassware and well presented. A fellow traveler in our group orders a large Bosteel's Pauwel Kwak which requires a deposit for the specialized glassware- the deposit: one shoe. Not both shoes, but one shoe that was reliquished, placed in a well-type of basket and hoisted to the top of the rafter by the barkeep, only to be retrieved upon the return of the glass. The acitivity of watching the basket and the sounds of the pulley became very cheap entertainment for us throughout the evening.

The trip to the upstairs restroom reveals several other, and more intimate and quaint, rooms further toward the back; each with seemingly unique identities and comforts. The circular stair would certainly not meet the building code requirements of the U.S. as their climb and descent was rather tricky after a few strong ale.

But the beer selection was both dedicated to the flavour of Belgium and varied in their artistry and palate preferences. Offerings included nearly all of the Trappiste brewed ales, an array of sour ales, fruited ales (one particular banana beer wan't served to one young gentleman because he was not a girl), strong dark ales, blonde ales, strong golden ales, and many obscure ales that were not known to me. Better offerings that are familiar include Bosteel's Tripel Karmeliet, Steenberg's Gulden Draak, Leffe, Slaapmuske Tripel, and the like. As with beer pricing around Belgium, I found the bill very favorable as I am willing to pay close to 50% more for the same bill in the U.S. As most of the ales were fresher, more vibrant, and zestier than I am used to, I found the price well worth the beer!

As with most European service, our waiter was less attentive than we wanted as our glasses ran dry and we had to exert some effort to regain his attention. Afterwards, the standard wait time for a properly poured ale was appropriate.

Although there are several beer cafes in the area that borrow similar demeanor, atmosphere, offerings, and service, this bar exudes charm, quality, and quirkiness. It's truly Belgian in every way.

So on he pub crawl, I was told we had to stop in here. Old wood, old signs, tons of glassware, and beer stuff. A back room table that looks like it used to be a courtyard, but now it is covered. A nice selection of drafts and bottles, but you can pretty find all of this in any pub, except for one thing. The 1+ liter of beer that comes in a big carriage glass. I had to give them my left shoe so they could put it in a basket and hoist to the ceiling to keep for ransom for the beer glass. Kind of strange to only wear one shoe, especially when you have to go upstairs to the bathroom, I worried that I might fall, then thought about I and stand in a public bathroom with one shoe on, I suppose these things happen. Nonetheless, a novel idea and a neat place.

This was the only bar I visited in Gent so I can not compare it to to others in the city. The space inside was nice and cozy but also had some room to it. There was a room in the back with a few tables and that is where we ended up sitting. They had fake hop vines and beer memorabilia decorating the walls. The selection was decent and the prices were reasonable too. If I were to visit Gent again I would come back to this bar. I believe in the warmer weather they have outdoor seating which is nice because the bar is on a big town square.

I visited this beer bar after reading reviews of it here on BA. It was the one beer bar I went to today in Ghent. The location is ideal in a big square full of bar and restaurants. The atmosphere is very much like that of a biergarten. It had lots of different beer signs, posters, and beer items including several different types of glasses on display. The ceilings are lined with numerous types of beer mugs. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this place-definitely felt like a European beer bar.

Our server was very friendly although the service was a bit on the slow side.

I had a Duchesse de Bourgogne and my friend had a de dolle Oebier.

The selection was extensive and it was hard to make a selection.

I'd definitely recommend this place if you're in Ghent.

A: Very cosy place (altough it is pretty big), with classic beer memorabilia with some nice traditions, fairly international clientele.

Q: beer is always of exceptional quality.

S: There not the frindliest of people (altough very funny sometimes, in a rude way, i dare you to ask for a heineken), but their work is correct

S: good card, mainly belgian but with some foregn beer

F: typical Belgian bar food

I always find it hard to review theses places when it comes to prices. The basic things are pricey, so are the rarers brews, but for those you should be willing to pay. For the cheapskates here they do have a beer of the month, 2 for the price of one which, which makes that beer quite cheap)

De Dulle Griet (Mad Meg) is right on the square. It wasn't that high on my list but it was nearby and we headed in to see what they had.

The beer selection was good and the atmosphere was classic brown bar. We grabbed a table and got to ordering. My buddy was intrigued by the house beer that was served in the big coachman's glasses. He ordered the blonde and then the waiter asked for his boot. After a double take, he repeated the request. Evidently, the glasses are very expensive and to keep people form running off with them, they keep one of your shoes as colateral. So he gave the man his left boot, a basket was lowered by pulley from the ceiling, the boot was placed in the basket and it was hoisted far above our heads. I ordered the Buffalo Stout which required no loss of footwear.

While my friend was making his way through his coachman's glass, I finished my stout (sweetish and fruity, nice stuff) and ordered a bottle of Liefmans Goudenband, one of my all time favorites.

There was quite a crowd gathering now, especially one party at the bar who looked like they were meeting for a drink after work. They asked us if they switch places with us given the size of our table and we obliged. They were grateful and bought our next round.

I ordered a Delirium Tremens (another old favorite) while Dave asked the bartender to bring him something unique. He was served a Leutebok, a good bock beer but the unusual part was the glassware. Imagine a goblet. Now remove the everything from the stem down. That's the glass. You can't sit it on the bar like that so it comes with a wooden stand. Sure it was a bit gimmicky but the beer wasn't bad at all.

We drank our beers, chatted with some fellow Americans from Pittsburgh and then walked out, now quite toasty, into the twilight.

Good (not great) beer list, good service and a friendly crowd. Probably the most fun I had in Gent.

Small place, tons of old stuff thrown about. I particularly liked the religious nook over the bar. Very narrow, winding staircase to the toilets - careful if you're drinking Trappists! Order a Maxi (1.5 liters) and the bartender takes one of your shoes, deposits it in a basket, and hoists it to the ceiling - you get it back when, and if, you finish your beer. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. We met locals who swear by this place. Decent enough selection without many surprises. Young crowd, but they behaved. Worth a stop if you're in Ghent.

Elaina and I stopped into De Dulle Griet after an enjoyable visit to the Gravenstein. There is a lot to love about this bar but let's start with the one big problem...service.

I ordered a John Martin Guinness since I hadn't had one in Belgium yet. The bartender said, "the tourist wants a healthy drink like a coca-cola." Then his coworker brought me the beer and an absolutely filthy glass. We would have left after just one but alas it was pouring rain so we stuck around ordering a couple of their house beers. When I asked for the Gentse Tripel the bartender yelled out to the other, "A Tripel for the Fag!" So...a big fat zero for service.

Now to the good things about De Dulle Griet...

It's named after a cannon that was apparently named after Mad Meg, a badass Flemish chick who pillaged hell.

It claims to serve more than 250 beers and from the look of things they certainly serve at least 150. These beers include plenty of Trappists, a few house specialties, and a great variety of well chosen, high quality Belgians.

They have several different large drinking vessels. Want a giant bolleke? You got it. Feel like drinking a meter of La Chouffe? No problem. Just take off your shoe and hand it to one of the asshats behind the bar. They will put it into a cool contraption and hoist it up to the ceiling where it will remain until you return their expensive glassware.

The atmosphere is great. The ceiling actually resembles the Brueghel painting that shares the same name. There's a dead boar, wagon wheel chandeliers, and the walls are covered in ancient looking beer junk. Also, going to the bathroom is a real adventure.

Still, it's hard to get past the service. I would really love this bar if it had even just inattentive or slow service. I could deal with that but these dudes were asking for a fight. Lucky for all of us, this was the first bar of the day and I was stone sober. Had I been drunk, I would have clocked one of those bartenders.

Note: The following day, when walking past De Dulle Griet the skies opened up and we were forced to flee inside for shelter. The place was dead and a new, female bartender was working so I hoped to have a better experience. It was better but not by much. She rushed us to order and was uninterested in making suggestions, but...at least she didn't spit in my beer or kick me in the groin as I half expected her to. Also, the prices are quite high.

Visited twice during New Year weekend (08-09).

First visit early afternoon fairly quiet and we sat/stood by one of the big barrles in the front room. This bar room has all manner of items hanging from the ceiling, puppets, flags, hats and other rubbish. The bar is impressive all wood and carved, the waiter helpful bearded and fat.

Second visit we had to sit in the third or back room, obviously once an uncovered courtyard, now covered and heated. Diffferent waiter, same results, no problems and a swift friendly service. The middle and back rooms are less cluttered with items but still let you know you are in a bar where beer and having fun is the most important thing.

Good selection of beers both on tap and in bottles, a very nice bar.

I visited this place on Sunday November 2nd 2008. It consists of a three roomed atmospheric pub (back two rooms non-smoking) with a very good beer list.

We managed to find a table in the second room, but had some difficulty being served as the place was quite busy. I did stand up at the bar (in the front part) but the two behind the bar ignored me, so I returned to the table and waited for the guy serving the tables to serve me. This was the only downside for me; the guy was very busy and was coping as well as he could, but they could have done with another person serving. The two behind the bar did not seen overworked! Anyway, I suppose he gets all the tips.

The taps were; Barbar, Delerium Tremens, Dulle Griet blonde, Tripel Ename, Gentse Tripel, Lindemans Kreik, La Chouffe, Leffe Blonde, St Bernardus Prior 8 and Westmalle dubbel. Excellent!

Overall, a very good beer bar in Gent.

I discovered this bar while being in college in Gent, this is by all means not a college bar though. The crowd is very diverse, tourists and locals all seem to like the place. The last time I visited was Christmas 2007, the place was packed with holiday shoppers but the service and atmosphere was far from stressed. The interior is really nice and somewhat chaotic, but what really made it nice was the woodstove behind us.

The choice of beers is impressive and their prices are very reasonable. I try to go here every time I visit Belgium, just because I know they will have something I haven't tried yet.

WARNING!!!
we went back in July of 2009 during the Gentse Feesten, avoid this place during this time!!! Their beerlist got shrunk down to 10 beers for this whole period, making it just a very average loud cafe. I do not want to change my rating because I heard rumours they do this because of issues with theft of glasses when it gets this busy. Still, this was our only destination in Gent that day and it was a huge let down

My wife and I found De Dulle Griet during our afternoon in Gent. After some shopping and site seeing, this was the perfect refresher.

Nice old wooden bar on the left with it seemed like a huge pack of waiters serving a medium sized crowd. There were 3 or 4 nice big tables on the right so we grabbed one. Looks like they were made of wine barrels or something like that. Since the waiters were all wearing Westmalle aprons, I thought I would have 1..or 2. Ended up with a blonde that was good as well.

When we were about leave they were lowering a cool old basket from the ceiling over in front of the bar. It had the shoes of 2 people that had ordered large glasses of Kwak and they had to give shoes as a deposit. Funny to see as it was a husband and wife with a few kids.

This one of the largest, smokiest and most crowded stops in Gent.

There are several rooms with bench style seating and a bar in the front. Fortunately, the size of the establishment was able to accommodate our group of eight, despite how busy it was.

The beer selection is large and well done. We were able to enjoy a number of unique beers at respectable prices.

The service was excellent. Oddly enough, the waiter was the same waiter that two of our group members had met over a year ago. He remembered them coming in for two beers. He even remembered the time of day.

If it is a big selection you seek, then this is one of the better stops in Gent. There are far better places to go for a nicer atmosphere.

Dulle Griet was easy to find, just look for the neon sign out front.

We sat outside and were greeted by a fairly rude waiter (it seems to be there claim to fame). We asked for a beer menu and were told to go look at the window. With 250 beers, staring at a window at night is a royal PITA. We picked out several as we figured they would be out of something. We were correct, they were out of some so we settled on something safe and decided to only have one due to the banter and brashness of the staff.

The service was quick and attentive, but with the attitude just did not cut the mustard with this weary traveler. A bit fresh and notably smart with everyone, including passers-by. It was not appreciated and certainly not desired. No tabs here, pay as you go.

The beers were fairly pricey with zero bargains in sight. The best thing about the experience was the bathroom. The tight spiral staircase to get there was a challenge in itself. There are many more interesting places to enjoy a beer than this and if it fell into my path I might give it another try, but I certainly would not go out of my way to have someone be rude to me again.

Dulle Griet has an interesting vibe about it. There’s always a mixture of young and old patrons sitting side-by-side sharing a common good beer appreciation. There’s cool beer related stuff lining every inch of wall inside and a great relaxing square if you want to sit outside. There’s an insanely steep, Alice-in-Wonderland staircase that leads up to the restrooms that almost feels like a ladder. I keep wondering how many people have broken their neck here.

The beer selection is awesome. I understand 150 although who really knows … and who cares as long as they don’t run out of good ones.

The wait staff is a surly bunch but once you get to know them it seems to crack their grumpy shell a bit. We sat outdoors last May and had Delirium and La Guillotine accompanied with Cheese and cold sausage. The simplicity of this combination with the mustard and parsley salt is incredibly good. When we ordered our waiter finished our sentence “Can we have some” … “cheese and sausage!” then walked away abruptly. We tried not to laugh unsuccessfully. It’s like some live comedy routine with these guys. I think they enjoy these customer interactions as much as we do.

Highly recommended place to visit. Cheers!

If atmosphere is what you’re looking for, you must experience the Dulle Griet. From the moment you walk through the front door, you’re immersed in an unbelievable collection of breweriana hanging from every corner of this quaint little pub. Speaking of hanging, that’s what your shoes will be doing if you order the famous “Drink Max”, an enormous beer served in an oversized Kwak style glass. Once you place your order, your shoes are put in a basket and hoisted to the ceiling. When you finish your beer and return the coveted glass, you’ll get your shoes back.

If the “Drink Max” is a little more than what you were looking for, there’s no problem. The beer selection is extensive with several daily specials. The menu is limited to cheeses and cold cuts, but for some reason they just seem like the best cheese and cold cuts you’ve ever eaten. It must be the beer. And if you’re still hungry, just stumble over to the restaurant Amadeus where you can feast on the best all-you-can-eat ribs and baked potatoes.

Right on the Vrijdagmarkt, it's easy to find, just please don't ask me to pronounce that...

This place is split in sections, with the bar up front, a small section with booths in the middle, and more seating in the back, with a small section upstairs that seemed to be closed. There were a few people outside having a drink, but I didn't trust the weather enough to push my luck. Besides, it's beautiful inside. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the place wasn't very crowded, just a few students having a Beer or two. Nice mugs hanging from the ceiling everywhere.

Service was a little slow, in fact the waiters were having dinner in the booth section while we waited for the bill! Nonetheless, he was friendly enough and didn't seem to mind that we cut short his dinner.

No food, just snacks, like sausages and cheeze.

Very good Beer selection. Another great stop on my bar tour of Belgium!

The menu is big and looks great! I only popped in for 2 beers so i didn't stay long enough to get a good feel for the bar.

Dulle Griet has circus-like decor with a brick bar with big barrel tables. They are located on the markt, and have a nice selection of bottles in a big space. They were known for their hoisted net over the bar for depositing patron's shoes as means of deposit for using the once precious, now popular, Kwak glass. The service at Dulle Griet can be at times appear disinterested, but that's OK, it's about the beer selection, location, and atmosphere that brings me here.
