While I listed this as an oatmeal stout, it's actually a bit different. Unlike most, which are using the oats for a texture component -this is actually brewed using malt from oats. It's pretty unique, and AFAIK one of a kind for the moment.
This is thick, black, and dense. The 1/2" head is deep brown. It looks like something much bigger/stronger than it is. I'd say it's a dead ringer for a thicker imperial stout.
The nose, on the other hand, has no traces of booze. Instead you get roasted notes and semisweet chocolate. Pretty much like a normal American stout, but (intentionally) lighter on the hops.
The flavor carries that same roasted note (coffee, cocoa) and you can't help but pick up some faint oatmeal flavors...which sets this apart. Not too sweet, but definitely far from dry, and the hops are there, but minimal in order to let this new malt flavor shine.
The texture is amazing. Thick and silky, but because of the low ABV, drinking this is just too easy. The only real downside is that the thickness actually fills you up faster than you might want.
This is unique and wonderful. I'd love to see this return as a regular winter seasonal and I have to wonder if this is something that might really catch on.
