Smells of lemon, pine and slight citrus. Instantly get the lemon, pine and grapefruit tastes with honey tastes and sweet bready malt s as well. It leaves a piney bitterness on the back of the tongue especially as it is warms.

This beer turns into an amazing beer as it warms as all the complexities come out. Sweet yet very hoppy this is what a double IPA should be. This one should get more attention.

This is exactly the beer I have been hoping for from this brewery (or any other in San Diego). I love double IPA's, am a total hop head, but I think exploring yeast in a big way is the Next Thing in craft beer. I love a beer I have trouble seeing through. This one is totally opaque equals complex/deliciious. Flavor is opaque, transparency is the lack thereof.
It's a little sweet, but IPA's always have been.

Pours a murky dark orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Thin swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of citrus fruit, citrus zest, and grapefruit juice aromas. Taste is much the same with earth, candied citrus zest, and grapefruit juice flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that has solid citrus forward hop qualities that are slightly better in the smell in my opinion.

Serving type: bottle.

Put this one on your pancakes at IHOP. It's syrupy sweet with an overwhelming grapefruit flavor. There is a warm toasty flavor that is interesting. It's just so fruity I'm not sure when or how you would drink this stuff.

Seriously hot, alcoholic, and spicy on the tongue, lips, and palate. An equal opportunity over-the-top brew. Quite aromatic with citrus and some pine, a hint of turpentine. Quite attractive in the small nonic, however, with a crisp white head and lovely darkish amber color. It's an interesting off-kilter entry in the DIPA crowd, if that's your thing. Ow, it's just plain hot.

From the 22 oz bottle bought at Olive Tree in Ocean Beach. Still waiting for an epiphany for Lightning, and maybe some new brews. I don't see many recent reviews, and I almost never see Lightning beers on tap on their home turf.

A - Pours a hazy golden-orange color with a finger of frothy white head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of grapefruit, citrus, pine, and grassy hops with caramel and biscuit malts, and a bit of booze.

T - Starts off grapefruit and citrus hops with some bitterness and some caramel malts. Through the middle, pine and grassy hops come through with more bitterness and a bit of biscuit malts. The finish is a mix of grapefruit, pine, and grassy hops with resiny bitterness with some caramel malts and a touch of booze.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a dry, bitter, and lightly sweet finish.

D - Very drinkable. Good hop profile with good bitterness throughout.
