Poured from the tap into a pint glass. This beer pours a brownish black color with a small off-white head. The aroma has a strong wood smell that I am not a fan of. The flavor is slightly bitter with a slight aftertaste. I am not a big fan of this.

Draft at Foxfire Grille, Snowshoe Mountain, WV. Has a fairly grapefruity hop aroma with a dash of roasted coffee thrown in. The body is dark brown to black and the finger sized tan head fades immediately. Fore is grapefruit and mild roast. Thin body. Sort of a black pale ale, but not a particuarly good pale ale....and a fairly crappy stout.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass. Had on tap previously with a rough note to review back in July 2013, bottle says brewed and bottled in Baltimore so let's see here.

Nice deep walnut brown dark body, little highlights of red but not much. Head is a nice creamy espresso brown, three fingers and settles to a good bowled puck with real nice lacing. Pretty solid looking.

Aroma brings a mild char, but more of a nutty sense and a bit of brown ale like toasty quality. Not much sense of creamy character coming off, but some decent sweetness and chewy grain like hints give the impression something might be coming in that vein.

Palate comes more towards porter lightness and a flavor that hints at faint char and a bit of ash. Light with not much creamy depth, but some good charring and toasty notes in the mid palate, almost getting towards piping tobacco quality in flavor also. Washes a little to light for an oatmeal stout, a bit of metallic twinge in the finish but very small and not really distracting.

Overall ok, interesting to go back and revisit this.

Buckeyeboy provided the elusive WV tick! Thanks buddy! Standard black with good dark brown foamy head... no real lacing, looks a little thin on the pour. Dark malt with a little char in the nose, not enough sweetness to balance IMO. Flavor mirrors the aroma and could again use a little more malty sweetness to help tie things together... Lighter than expected body too unfortunately.. Still a decent beer, just could use a little dialing down.

12 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a perfect pint glass

L - It looks black until held to the light and some ruby red highlights come through. It is topped with three inches of tan head that leave some lacing on the glass.

S - I smell some dark chocolate and roasted malt giving the slightest burnt toast aroma.

T - The taste is similar to the smell. The roasted malt comes through more. It has a modest bitter finish.

F - Medium

O - It's better than their Seneca Indian Pale Ale. It's decent and quaffable. It pairs nicely with Loretta Lynn's "Coal Miner's Daughter."

Good, smooth beer. Low carbonation (at least the one I had). Overall, I would recommend this beer. Mine was in a can, not the bottled variety.
