Poured 0.5l bottle into a Weizen glass.

Appearance: Amber color. Hazy. Tall and lasting off-white foamy head. Medium carbonation is visible.

Smell: Yeast, banana, hints of clove.

Taste: Follows the nose. Dominant banana, clove in the back. Little bit of bubblegum. Slightly spicy aftertaste. Well balanced.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, medium carbonation.

Overall: Very good example of the style.

A - Beautiful color; very nice head; good lacing; amber, golden, hazy. Minimal carbonation, though, making for a great mouthfeel, but one of the few limitations of this beer.

S - Wheat; sweet; barley malt; banana.

T - Banana, slight hint of spice.

M - Very smooth yet crisp; very nice mouthfeel; comforting and warm.

O - Great drinking experience. You really can't go wrong here. If you like hefeweizen, this is one of the gold standards. I poured it from a can that came out of my German Christmas advent calendar.

Appearance – This had a gorgeous Hefe Weizen appearance. The body was a thick and very hazy orange and the head was monstrous, foaming up rightly. It settled slowly into volcanic pits on top of the bier.

Smell – This is as authentic as it gets. The aroma is pure, unadulterated yeast with some light, fruity notes. You can almost literally chew on the aroma of this weizen.

Taste – This is awesome. The big yeast notes from the nose jumped right into the mouth at first sip (it’s still quite cold). I’m actually mashing my teeth as I drink. I’m sure the flavors would come out even more if I had the patience to let this one warm . . . but I don’t.

There’s a slight uncomfortable sharpness in the hops, which probably is all that’s keeping me from 5ing the taste, but this one is excellent on all accounts. The finish is dominated by the soft, luscious fruits that make up a traditional Hefe Weizen. The banana is wonderfully mixed with some peaches, cherries, and a splash of fresh orange.

Mouthfeel – Medium-bodied and quite big for a weizen, but the story here is the full, fluffy consistency. It’s almost like eating bread dough, it’s just that good.

Drinkability – I’m picking up a case this weekend and vow never to let the supply get below three or four. This is a must have staple for anyone who enjoys the style.

Comments – This is right on par with the WEIHENSTEPHANER with much better availability.

Update – I initially rated this with a 2003 vintage so thought it would be interesting to re-review it after being on the site now for a year and a half. I did a mini taste test with a few other weizens when I had this one, a 2004 vintage.

It really is a terrific example of the style. I feel like I’m going back in time to when I lived in Bayern whenever I drink a Paulaner Hefe Weizen. I personally favor a bit of uneven flavor bias towards the yeast for this particular style, so this one is right up my alley.

Hefe-Weissbier pours a hazy darker copper color with a big lacing head. Nice creamy aroma with hints of banana. Taste is spicy and creamy. Like any other hefeweizen A little weaker, but nice body, and a bit of a flat feel. Overall pretty decent beer.

Dark, burnt orange. Hazy, with a massive, four-finger head that collapses to thick suds.

Banana esters. Subdued.

Spicy, banana & clove with a pronounced brown bread taste. Plenty of malt flavours.

Soft mouthfeel. Some spiciness. Medium carbonation. Slightly chewy.

Despite drinking at room temperature, a great weizen. To date, my favourite after Weihenstephaner.

A go to beer. Actually surprised I hadn’t reviewed before.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass. Beautiful white head with nice lacing with a cloudy golden yellow body. Very distinct banana and clove smell and taste.

Have had it fresh and know that tastes better than what I have in front of me.

Presentation: 16 oz slender euro style brown bottle, freshness date is on the bottom right corner of the front label. The label depicts a scene of perhaps the era in Germany when Paulaner first started brewing.

Appearance: The head is extremely amazing, it foamed up real quick at first and seems to want to tower on top of the glass. Champagne like bubbles raced to the top while the rush of yeast clouded the deep orange copper toned brew. After a few minutes the white head dissipates slightly yet it leaves thick foamy rings of lace down the sides of the glass.

Smell: Fruity of lemon juice and rind, nutty yeast and a touch of clove give it plenty of depth. Hints of spicy pepper corn and a trace of medicinal phenols add to the character.

Taste: Impeccably smooth with a malty medium body, carbonation has dropped down to a moderate level after the active pouring. Sweet tart nectarines and mild banana come to mind from the fruitiness, very abundant malt flavour with suggestions raw honey and sweet rolls. Light prickly spiciness that intensifies the close the finish gets. Hops are passive a give a touch of bitterness at most.

Notes: Funny, on the website it say that their Hefe-Weizen should not be served with a lemon because the citric oils kill the head, this is true so if you don’t care about good head and must add a lemon wedge to a perfectly great beer than please don’t let us or even the brewers tell you otherwise. Remember the beer gods are watching you. Loss of carbonation after the pouring was this beers only draw back, I got over that real quick.

Hazy golden with big head from aggressive pour.
Smells of banana and citrus.
Taste is clean and wet, not too sweet. Only a little hop at the finish.
Lots of carbonation. Refreshing and drinkable. Great for warmer days but solid enough for year round.
Overall textbook perfect Hefeweizen. Nothing weird or unusual but perfectly true to style.

Very cloudy burnt orange/gold in color with an enormous fluffy head. What a pleasant aroma...lemons and cloves. A pleasant tasting beer as well...lemons again, yeasty, a little spicy, and crisp. This is a solid hefeweizen. I'll be buying this again when summer rolls around.

Presentation: 12oz bottle in a Weizen glass

Poured rich & smooth with a subtle energy. Nose is classic Hefe but subdued. Ripe banana peel & clove are semi-sweet & subtly up front, very round & soft. Grass, straw & hay provide a floor for them to stand on. With some time to air it grows slightly estery with faint summer field wild flowers. In the background is some lite honey. There is a sweetness to the nose that is slightly atypical, yet nice.

The head, comprised of a fat finger's worth of loose, lively, softly snappin' pearl white foam fades rather quickly to a thin sheeting with an edge ring that does not lace. Body is rather striking & darker than most Hefes I've seen - a very warm, lite golden amber hue that fades from brassier near the head to more golden in the base. A steady stream of lazy bubbles rises thru it as a backdrop.

Crisp, clean, semi-sweet taste, sharper than the nose hints at. It has a cider-like dryness that, combined with the clove quality, really lifts the mouthfeel overtop a soft banana base. Overall the effect walks the line between crisp & sharp and soft & round.

It grows a little maltier on the palate with a wet, soft, muted crunching dryness, leveling out significantly as the base malts grow in presence. It finished very clean with a cider feel & banana sweetness that is very nice & chewy,,,a most enjoyable after taste if you like banana bread!

A nice, easy to drink, safe Hefe Weizen. I've had better and I've also had worse. This is a tweener for mouthfeel, and was also somewhat sweeter than most I've had. As a result, the banana bread aftertaste is wonderful. This would be a good pairing with a fruited salad like a Waldorf, chicken, pork with apples, any non-citric fruits/desserts, lobster, etc. This is a safe bet that I would drink again, and I would love to try with some banana bread! Check it out.

Pours a cloudy gold with a large white head that had great retention. Moderate amounts of lacing is left on the glass.

Typical Hefe smell. Plenty of cloves and banana aromas.

A nice balanced flavor. The clove flavors do not overpower everything else that this beer offers. Nice fruit notes are noticeable.

Does not have the creamy texture of other great Hefeweizens. I think it is a bit overcarbonated and a little harsh.

Very refreshing and easy drinking beer. Disappeared from my glass all to quickly.

Appearance - The appearance is quite alluring. The color is light and golden though very cloudy. It has a consistent carbonation and heavy head

Smell - The beer smelled beautiful. It is a very mild, hop, wheat, and fruit aroma. Slight hints of banana and orange. A creamy sense of fruit.

Taste - To me this is a perfect example of a hefe-weizen. It holds true to its style and deserves respect. The hopps and wheat seem to balance perfectly with the fruit notes.

Mouthfeel - It beer is definitely smooth and delicious. There are no overwhelming notes. There was a medium body with medium carbonation.

Drinkability - This beer is amazingly enjoyable. The beer is smooth and tasty. I would buy this beer again any day.
