Thanks to Tara for bringing back this 500 ml brown bottle from Germany. Best before date 09-05 on front label.
Pours dark brown, cloudiness you expect from a weizen. Large off-white head when poured. Aroma of caramel, and fruit, and strong yeast. Strong yeasty flavor with similar malty, caramel. Wheat flavor I was expecting was less noticeable, overpowered by yeast and heavy sweetness.
Will be interested to try other examples of this style

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a dark hazy brown colour with a decent white head.

Smells quite malty, yeasty, and fruity - surprisingly strong bananas.

Tastes very malty with quite a sharp yeast tang.

Overall a pretty nice beer but not the best of the style.

Beer bottl (50cl.), tasted in 2005.

Appearence : Dark color, with huge tan foamy head.
Smell : caramel, ginger and clove aromas.
Taste : sweetish taste with clove, good spicy (due to Bavarian yeast).
Mouthfeel : bitterish finish with ginger
Drinkability : a good hefe weiss dunkel beer brewered by Paulaner

on tap at the Castle very fresh sample;

Taps a clouded amber ( much like Schneider original) with a decent 2 finger sticky meringue cap that laces the glass as it drains.

Aromas are well defined big banana, peach and clove with some malty sweetness..very pungent.

Great wheat malt spine, fruity-spicey character medioum body with more substantial mouth feel than their pale hefeweizen.

Starts semi-sweat with a honey and fresh biscuit discernment then the great fruit and spice tastes arrive to make a more complex mixture on the palate. Fishes semi-dry with a spicey biscuit after taste.

A top tier commercial hefeweizen

Appearance: Brown-orange, huge head.

Smell: Clove, sweetness.

Taste: Very wheaty, a little spice and yeast/clove flavors come through on later tastes.

Drinkability: OK, kind of generic tasting. Not a lot of interesting flavors going on.

After many lagers here in China, a grocery store had some more interesting beers. Paulaner Dunkel Weiss was kind of a disappointment though. I like their Hefe and was hoping for a yeasty flavored treat, but the yeast flavors took a back seat to the wheat in this beer. Still pretty decent but I probably won't have in a bottle again (maybe on tap!).

On-tap at Paulaner im Tal in Munich. Served in a Paulaner Weizen glass.

A: Cloudy copper colored brew. A rocky and dense cream tinted head has great retention and leaves lots of lace. A very nice look indeed.

S: Lots of ripe banana initially. Toffee and plum aromas added an extra layer of sweetness. A healthy dose of clove kept things in check.

T: Starts out with a toffee sweetness that's followed by a dry biscuit flavor. Bitterness comes on with a sharp clove bite. A plum fruitiness resides in the background. Finishes tart and dry, with lingering toffee and clove flavors.

M: The grainy body has a high level of prickly carbonation. It feels just about right for this style.

D: This is a nice Dunkelweizen. It has nice complexity of flavors and a low ABV that makes it an easy drinker. Overall, a solid discovery.

This beer is very murky and has lots of carbonation. The head is very thick and stable on top of a brown beer.

Smell of overripe bananas with clove and phenolic from the yeast. The wheat is very noticable and a nice caramellic smell adds to the beers complexity.

Taste has an average dose of banana and clove, layered on the grainy wheat backbone. The dark malts add a caramel and roasty, biscuity touch, even some candisugar, which obviously isn't in there. The yeast is quite fruity and gives a nice extra to the beer. Mouthfeel is a little sticky and somewhat sweet. A nice and decent beer.

-really spicy clove,pepper flavour upfront
-a zesty citrusy tartness coming through with some dark fruit
-slight buttery banana features
o.k. carbonation
-mild,bready finish

Finally a Dunkelweizen that tastes like it

Coming out of the bottle, a hazy nut brown color that looks opaque in the glass. A brilliant two thumbnail length white head rises to the top. It retains well and leaves a velvety film and lacing that smoothly drips down the glass. Nice looking brew.
The aroma opens up with moderate banana and bubblegum with a hint of citrus. There is also the aroma of toasted brown bread spiced with light clove. Later on I will describe how other aromas become unlocked and how the initial aromas become accentuated.
First impressions in the mouth are that it is smooth and medium bodied with a rich malt backbone. It is easy to drink yet hearty. It paired nicely with my dessert (baklava) yet I can see its versatility working with BBQ. As I drink further, flavors of brown bread with spicy noble hops develop. There is also a refreshing citrus finish.
As I put the glass up to my nose, aromas of banana coated with zesty citrus become more intense. Ditto the brown bread aroma. Furthermore, call me crazy but I think I detect lemon merengue pie. As I take more sips, the malt flavors continue to open up, including caramel sweetness and wheat smoothness.reveals hints of sweetness. The yeast flavors bring forth banana, light bubblegum and clove.
I was impressed by this brew as it makes me want to know more about the style. Indeed Dunkelweizen is becoming a favorite.
