On tap into a weizen glass.

A-The beer was mostly murky and the color of overripe bananas. There was about one finger of dirty-white head that faded to a ring pretty quickly. Some lacing on the glass.

S-Pleasant aromas of banana, wheat, and a touch of clove spice. A little musty smelling.

T-Mild flavors here: wheaty, light malts with a touch of spice from the yeast, and some banana fruit. In other words, the taste followed the smell.

M-Easy drinking with a light to medium body and (for the style) very little carbonation. A touch watery.

O-This was a fairly simple beer. The flavors were not unpleasant, but were just middle of the road in both character and complexity. I would have preferred a little more carbonation and a touch of citrus flavor or something else to liven things up.

It made lots of head, thick and persistent. And it has a brown hazy color, and floating yeast residuals.
Yeast is predominant in its aroma, also some hints of cloves and wood. It has a medium carbonation with tiny bubbles and a medium body.
Tastes reminded me of ciders with some caramel and hints of plums, though not overly sweet. Here the yeast is also a key player. Citric taste, more lime than orange. Slightly bitter and a bit toasted. Interesting beer.

Glass: Weihenstephan weizen glass

Paulaner's dunkelweizen is, to me, one of the standard-bearers for the style. The aroma is pleasant and complex, as is the taste, both featuring prominent bread-like, yeast, spice, and fruit flavors. Wish this was readily available in the US, as it is easily on par, though different enough from, Weihenstephan and Ayinger's offerings.

Pours a towering head of small, off-white to light tan bubbles, that yield a fairly frothy appearance as a whole. The head is omnipresent throughout the entire glass, with significant washes of lacing that are renewed with each sip. The body is an opaque brown color with hints of orange in it; light brings out lighter orange and singed brown hues from the body. Carbonation is easily visible along the sides of the glass, and quite active.

Aroma is heavily yeasty, with similarly deep-seated whole wheat bread and spicy, nutmeg-like phenols. Banana-like esters and some apple cider are present in the shadows of the major scents. In general, quite nice, could be a bit more complex and expressive, but not by very much.

Overall flavors are whole wheat bread with heavy yeast; some tangy, spicy, nutmeg-like phenols; mild, but noticeable banana-like esters; slight apple cider. Front of the palate detects bread, some yeast, mild banana-like esters, and tangy apple cider. The whole wheat bread-like flavors are surprisingly present in mid-palate: I was expecting stronger nutmeg-spice and fruity esters. Those flavors are there, quite detectable, just balanced by more bread-like flavor than I would have thought by smell alone. The mid-palate is actually quite good, the wheat bread mixing with the spices and banana esters, each seeming more present than the other with each passing moment. Back of palate has a significant blend of banana esters, nutmeg-like phenols, and apple cider qualities: the resulting mix is quite delicious. Aftertaste is sweet with hints of apple cider and bananas, balanced by a slight bitterness, tart, perhaps from hops, wheat, or esters: perhaps some combination of the three.

Beer is medium-bodied with high to medium-high levels of carbonation. The result is a beer that is slightly fizzy, but quickly calms to a foamy, creamy, generally smooth mouthfeel. Modest wheat twang/tartness from mid-palate onwards. Finish is dry, with some residual stickiness across the palate. Quite up to style, and rather satisfying.

500ml bottle served in a mug glass.

A: Pours a amber to brown color. Cloudy. Forms a big aired beige head. Low retention but a thin layer remains forever and some lacings are formed and left in the glass

S: Slightly sweet. Spicy. Banana and cloves. Caramel, wheat, fruits, yeasts and earthy hops. Biscuity

T: As the nose. Sweet upfront. Candy sugar, banana bread. Notes of cloves. Heavy wheat. A little bit metallic. Slightly bitter end

M: Watery. Light to medium body. Medium carbonation. Smooth and bready in the mouth. Malty aftertaste

O: Good drinkability. Smooth and pleasant beer. Paulaner quality. Recommended
