Unfilteted dark rye beer, made from barley, wheat and rye malt
Appearence :
Smell : Caramel, ginger aroma
Taste : sweetish taste with ginger
Mouthfeel : creamy peppery liquorice finish
Drinkability : A very good beer to drink with pork-butcher's meat

Pours clear and brown, low head retention. Aroma of caramel and melanoidins, some faint alcohol.

Sweet and malty flavour, caramelly and some nuttiness. Light finish and some nuttiness. Medium high carbonation, slightly thin mouthfeel and a faint alcohol warmth.

Aroma suggests more than flavour delivers. Detectable rye qualities are nonexistent, which is regrettable and probably due to bottle age. Overall tastes like a sub-par dunkel.

Paulaner Roggenbier is best served at proper cellar temperatures (50-55F) from a standard weizen glass or krug. This Roggenbier pours up very lively with ample carbonation which creates an inviting creamy white head that sits atop a turbid copperish-brown body. The aroma is zesty with lots spicy phenolics (e.g. allspice, cloves & cinnamon sticks) and ripe fruity esters (e.g. bruised bananas, soft red plums & blood oranges). The typical weizen character is prevalent, but there's also a distinctive underlying rye breadiness along with some floral Noble hop notes. The flavor starts slighty yeasty and spicy (i.e. caraway seeds, fresh ground cloves, candied ginger) then gives into some fresh rye breadiness that carries a definable burnt caramel/toffee character. The abrupt finish is acidic, dry with some stone fruit astringency. This medium bodied specialty is often refered to as a Hefe-Ryzen and rightly so, as malted rye typically constitutes 50% or greater of the grist (some versions have upwards of 60-65% rye) such as this one. This one is definitely not as complex as the original Schierlinger from Thurn und Taxis, but certainly a well-crafted effort nonetheless! Suggested pairings include a simple Pastrami on rye, a traditional BLT (Bacon Butty) served with fresh stone ground mustard or a classic Reuben (of course!) with a side order of Pommes frites (French fries/chips) and a Kosher pickle spear. Here's to the Roggenbier Revival!

500 ml bottle, bought in Germany. Deep copper colour, large beige head. Intense aroma of red fruits, dried fruits and jam / marmalade, also notes of cloves, oak and sherry. Flavour is moderately malty, slightly acidic with some vinous qualities, red fruits, caramel and rye bread in the background. Moderate carbonation, soft mouthfeel, smooth and pleasant to drink. A very nice rye beer.

BBE 12-05. Nice yellowish head and darkbrown beercolor. Nose is very banana fruity, litle diacethyl also(?) and the rye is dominating in maltyness.Litle roasty in back also. Taste is as nose is quiet empty; banana, ryemalty, maltsweet and watery. Not that much smell, taste and mouthfeel to find in this brew and to me rather disappointing.

Beautifully clear and chestnut/amber colored. No real head at all, just a quarter inch at the pour and then only a thin eggshell ring and a 2" circle cluster of dust in the center. Bits of carbination can be seen rishing up around the chalice here and there. Very aromatic... nice and crisp, sweet and malty, with the rye just punching through. Very noticable carbination, it just feels good, nice and tight. It kind of just foams up across your tongue a bit. It really is fairly light , but with the carbination, it feels more like a medium body.
I really have no experience with any rye's, so I do not have anything to compare this one to... but the flavor in this one is nice. Very balanced, crisp and clean. It is almost gone as soon as it was there. Maybe a slight taste of having had a bite of rye bread, and then rinsing it down with a sip of brew. The rye is just noticable, but not screaming out at you. Malty and just a bit of caramelly sweetness. Maybe just a touch of herbal tea flavor? This would be a great session if it was readily available over here! Very drinkable, it just goes down very easy, could sit back with a bunch of these babies!

Thanks so much to Horst for hand carrying this all the way from Germany just so I could have my first rye experience! I cannot believe I actually waited so long to try it!
A p.s. just for Horst, my sharing partner says it was very well made, bone dry and he really has nothing to compare it to, but went into this thinking he would not like it but did!

The beer pours a reding amber color with a thick white head, a thing of beauty. The aroma is exceptional. There are all the elements of a dunkel weizen here, but with the addition of rye that adds a unique aroma as well as taste. The taste is good. Again, the caramel wheat flavor overcomes you, but the addition of rye adds an extra element. The mouthfeel is good. It is a medium bodied beer that has the right amount of carbonation. It is a great drinking beer; a style that I have never tried before. Thank's Chris, the weekend warrior, for bringing this one from overseas.

Hmm well its a very nice brew very dunkelish. Pours a red toned caramelish brew small head. All the aromas are very much weizen as is most of the flavour: this beer is very similar to the common paulaner naturtrub but has a slightly stronger taste and mouthfeel which makes it only slightly different and maybe better for some.

Dunklewiezen-ish, in that it has some very banana-ish flavours, with slight hints of craamel and toffee, dry finish, lightly tart, and pretty tasty all round, relatively soft, with some earthy notes. Bready/doughy at times, with some stickyness, dry-ish finish, pretty tasty.
