Got this one at Bert's Bierhuis in Utrecht.

From a 500ml bottle into a German pint glass.
Note: Drunk right after the Helles lager.

APPEARANCE: Pours a two finger, thinner looking, fizzy, light tan head with decent retention. Clear maroon brownish/red with lots of active carbonation. Head quickly fades to a thin, bubby wisp. A few bubbles remain until the end but leaves no real lacing down the glass. Looks relatively flat by the end.

SMELL: Milder nose for the style. Some grainy malt, dark bread and sweet caramel. A decent dose of raisins in there as well, with touches of toffee. It’s quite nice actually, but simply too mild for the style.

TASTE: Same watery problem as the helles bier. Some grainy dark bread as well as caramel and toffee notes, but simply too watery through the middle into the finish. A mild yet lingering aftertaste with notes of sweet caramel and some bitter, floral hops, but just too water and not flavorful enough.

PALATE: Medium body with soft, medium carbonation. Creamy enough, though not quite as creamy as the helles, goes down smooth with a slightly dry finish. Probably the best part of the beer.

OVERALL: This is just not a good brew. I generally like this style, but this one was simply a watery, flavorless dark lager that was pretty ugly to boot. A worse Dunkel than their Helles is a Helles. There are quite a few good dark lagers in Munich, but this is not one of them. Pass.

This lager poured a deep, clear red with a decent head that left a nice amount of lacing clinging to the glass. The aroma was overpoweringly malty. On tasting the beer, the first thing that hits is the malt flavor, sweet and strong. There is no hop to balance out the malt and no other discernable flavors whatsoever. The body was moderately heavy with a good amount of carbonation.

In summation, I found this beer a little malty for my taste. I enjoy a sweet beer, but this was over the top.

500ml bottle best before March '12.

It pours a nice looking dunkel reddish brown but the head is sudsy and dissipates immediately with no lacing.

The smell is mostly grainy with some caramel and a hint of raisin.

The taste is sweeter and surprisingly more bitter than most dunkels. It isn't the perfect balance though. It is hinged upon more cloying-like sweetness and more flavorless bitterness instead of that sweet but subtle sweetness and balancing hop flavor that a good dunkel should exhibit. Nevertheless it isn't bad, but it certainly could be more refined.

Got it on tap on Belgrade beer fest.

A-Dark ruby color,low carbonation,nice white foam,lasting till the end.

S-Some caramel malt, average for the style.

T/M-The caramel really comes out here. Not too complicated and nicely balanced.Lightly carbonated, smooth for drinking.

O-This is average dunkel, must admit that hefe dunkel is much better.

.5L, best before March 2012 (that's what brewing solely with hop extract will afford you, a long shelf-life).

Pours a rich, clear chestnut with a small beige head. Lacing and retention are below-average.

Aroma has notes of sweet coffee and nutty malts, some hops.

The flavor is malty, with crusty and toasted bread flavors. Touch of chocolate. It's a very plain beer, but it's very clean. Some hop tang on the finish. The mouthfeel is medium-light, with soda-like carbonation.

As a Dunkel this stuff is not that impressive, but drinkable. Much better examples of the style to be had.

At Paulaner Marienplatz Munich. Excellent Dunkel. Don't think I'll find an IPA so this will have to do. Pretty good actually.

First had: on tap at Brauhaus Schmitz, Philly, PA

Poured a clear, reddish-brown with a finger of foamy, off-white head that dissipated fairly quickly, leaving a thin layer of bubbles behind. Toasted malt aroma, nutty, with hints of grains and dried fruit. Toasty malts in the taste, bready, nutty, with a hop bitterness coming through just a bit, giving a pretty dry finish. Medium mouthfeel, and quite drinkable.
