Poured from a 320mL bottle into my Ayinger Celebrator pokal.

Sienna to bronze gradient, not quite clear with a half finger of buff cream on the surface. Average retention; fine, delicate lacing.

Bready, jam-on-toast aroma with faint milk chocolate hints as well. Malt-forward with barely discernible hops.

Melanoidin-heavy, deep, rich maltiness on the palate, growing sweeter into the finish where it is eventually joined by a low earthy bitterness from the hops. Hints of fruit laced black tea and caramel at times, and hints of alcohol. No off notes.

Medium-light bodied, gently warming, and clean with moderate carbonation.

A clean, not-quite-sweet, deeply malty exemplar of the style - I prefer Optimator (darker) or Celebrator (more potent), but this is probably the best value among the easily obtainable imports.

11.2 oz. bottle

Pours clear red amber with a creamy off-white foam head. Smells like caramel, toffee, toasted malts, rich brown bread, red and black grapes, red apple, some chocolate, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like dark caramel, toffee, roasty toasted malts, rich brown bread, some chocolate, red and black grapes, red apple skin, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium-light bodied, creamy and slick with moderate carbonation. Overall a really nice doppelbock.

Pours a deep amber coloration with a medium frothy head. Smells of sweet, caramel malts with a hint of honey and an underlying boozyness. Taste is dominated by sweet, caramelly, biscuity malts with just a slight hint of hoppy grassiness. Starts out pretty mellow, but turning a little harsh in the aftertaste. Pretty one-sided, there is not a lot of complexity to this, even though it is still nice in a sweet, malty, but not overpowering so, way. Actually, the longer I drink this, the more I feel that it has a kind of unplesant boozyness to it and is also just a little too sweet. Highly overrated, IMO, but I've seen people say that it actually used to be better and has deteriorated over the years.

Slight sour character and alcoholic overly present.

A bad/old keg?

Bottle from Pioneer Supermarket on the UWS.
Tan-amber with yellowish head, nose of toffee, caramel, brandy, taste follows the nose with lite toasted malt notes and maybe a hint of yeasty banana, this beer is full bodied and nicely carbonated. Caramel malt candy.

Poured from fridge temp. Pours dark brown and semi-transparent. Good light head. Nose is caramel, toffee, candied sugar. Taste is really nice. Toffee and malts really come through. Some maple and oak, as well as some bread notes. Mouthfeel is full and coating.

Pours an almost clear deep amber/pale brown producing 3 fingers of khaki, frothy, somewhat lasting head that leaves small rings of lacing & a island-like surface cap. Aroma is fruity, toasted brown bread, grainy & wheat?-like, caramel, molasses, raisin & roasted nuts. Taste is sweet, fruity, bready, toffee, burnt brown sugar, roast, hints of dark fruits. The finish being peppery, fruity & sugary caramel. Aftertaste is a slightly sweet, burnt caramel, fruity & spicy with a minor bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation, smooth, creamy, slick, oily & chewy with an aftertaste that is a little chalky. A good example of a slightly above average dopplebock.
