Notes: Known as "Munich Lager" or "Original Munich Lager" outside of Germany.

Our Original Munich Lager is a true classic with its clear and bright gold sparkling hue, crowned by a pure white head. A beer which always goes down well: mild, elegant malts, with a hint of sweetness and a soft hint of hops in the background. This Munich beer is ideal to accompany spare ribs and spicy dishes. Just try it!

From a 500ml bottle.
L: Rich, golden colour with light carbonation and a half-inch, foamy head that reduces quickly to a smear.
S: Clean, grassy, pilsner malt. Noticeably malty.
T: Grassy, herbal, more than a hint of lemon.
F: Medium body. Low carbonation. A little stickiness. Lightly drying. Very smooth.
O: Great summer beer. The real deal. Serve this at your bbq instead of Peroni or Stella and your mates will thank you. Due to its low carbonation it would also make a good accompaniment to a curry in place of the ubiquitous Cobra or Kingfisher.

On-tap @ The Landing in Hillsborough, NJ.

Enjoyed this one during their Oktoberfest celebration. Pale gold color and clear with a creamy white head. Bready, grainy malt aroma. Just the right amount of herbal hops for balance. Slightly sweet in the finish with a touch of bitterness. Medium-light body and so incredibly soft and clean. Too easy to drink. I could have several of these in a row with ease. A textbook Helles.

Great German Helles lager. Found this when I was exploring various Biergartens in Munich.

12oz bottle into a pilsner glass
no bottling dates

A: Very light pale straw yellow, a few carbonation bubbles can be seen rising to the top of the glass. 1.5 fingers width of bright white head has decent retention before dissipating down, and leaves almost no lacing. 3.75

S: Floral, sweet, some hop spice, a metallic quality. 3.5

T: Hop spice, some sweetness, floral, subtle bitterness. 3.75

M/D: Light body, carbonation appropriate, very easy drinking. 3.5

O: Solid beer, but not my favorite Helles Lager. Can’t hate on a classic though. 3.75

I used to enjoy this often while stationed in babenhausen, Germany while in the Army in the mid 80s. I miss those days. Good German beer while spit shining boots.

Appearance - 3.0
Clear pale gold in colour, head is a sizable and creamy white. Retention and lacing are both lacking.

Smell - 3.5
Very clean, aromas of biscuity pale malt and lemony hops.

Taste - 3.5
Crisp, clean and a little boring. Malt and hops are well balanced and there are no off flavours, tastes of grain, a little husk, lemony hops give moderate bitterness, finishes dry with little flavour.

Mouthfeel - 3.5
Moderately carbonated with fine bubbles, quite light in the mouth although a little watery.

Drinkability - 4.0
A brilliant summer beer, very refreshing, although most beer enthusiasts will tire of it quickly.

OVERALL - 3.45
Quite a good beer really, possibly deserves to score higher, I just found it a little boring. Weihenstephaner makes a better, tastier helles lager.

Had this at the Paulaner Restaurant in Zhengzhou.
This is a tasty lager, very malty. Lots of wheat and bread flavors. Not a noticeable hop bitterness. Light and easy drinker, good choice for a hearty dinner. I think this pairs better with a broader range of food than the Hefe, although the Hefe is more refreshing.

A clean, easy drinking lager. Somewhat malty flavor. Low hopping allows for malt aroma to come through. Head was low and tight with a little lace on the glass. Pleasantly bitter finish. A nice, crisp, light and malt-oriented lager. I will definitely order this one on tap when available.

I really like their weiss beer, so I decided to give this a try. Poured golden yellow, with pretty decent head that lasted a while. Not bad, but no real characteristic that stood out. Very drinkable, however. Very smooth and would make a good session beer.

Welcome to the CANtinuing saga of New Beers From @jkblr Sunday (Week 755)! I have been running though his CANs as quickly as I CAN in support of The CANQuest (tm), but now, even my stamina is waning.

From the CAN: "The Traditional Munich Lager"; "Premium Import"; "Protected Geographical Indication".

I have to cop to using an oversized glass for this one, but it all seemed to work out. I beCAN by Crack!ing open the vent before CANmencing a slow, gentle C-Line Glug into the massive 2-L glass stein. 8=O This resulted in a most impressive two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, bone-white head with excellent retention. Color was a gorgeous Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5) with NE-quality clarity, enticing The Gelt Gang of Mammon, Croesus & Midas to break away from NFL Week 17 programming & join me in the kitchen. Nose was very biscuit malt-driven, but it was not sans a modiCAN of grassy, hay-like hops. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was toasty, biscuity and very pleasant with just a kiss of the hops. Mmm. This was the kind of crushable beer for which Munich is known. I would happily down 1-L or 2-L if I were there. It is nice that they deigned to put it in a CAN for me to enjoy in the meantime. Finish was semi- … Hmm. Semi-sweet or Semi-dry? I leave it to your palate to decide. YMMV.

Appearance: Medium golden color, faintly hazy, with a quite large off-white head, slight carbonation, and excellent lacing.

Aroma: Pronounced bready malts and honey notes with light but persistent hops.

Taste: Begins with slightly sweet malt and hints of honey, the light but substantial malt flavors carry throughout the taste. Toward the finish, mild but lingering herbal hop bitterness appears. The finish is clean and crisp.

Mouth feel: Quite smooth and rich, excellent for the style.

Drinkability/notes: A very pleasant and drinkable beer, which exudes quality and seems well met for hot summer weather.

I'm starting to think nearly all German wheat beers taste similarly good... Paulaner is no exception in that category. In the lager department, though, some German beers are more exciting than others. Now the Paulaner Original is a good, easygoing brew, I must say, but I think the Weihenstephaner, Spaten, and Hofbräu lagers have a little more Bavarian character.

The appearance and smell in the Paulaner Original are fine and what you'd expect. It's good tasting - no long, lingering finish, just grains, malt, a little lemony spice and clean feel on the palate. I can't say I'm not impressed; any beer that tastes just like it should taste works for me. I'd get this again... it's a good anytime beer.

L: clear golden color with a small top of head disolves almost immediately. Some lacings on the glass.

S: grains, bread and crackers, some light herbs

T&F: follows much of the aroma, malts in the start with slight hop bitterness in the finish with some herbs and spices in the back. Easy drinkable, clean with a crisp bite in the mouth. The mouthfeel was the best with this beer.

O: a easy drinking decent german lager. Nothing really exiting about it, but would work out good in a session with friends.

Clear gold color, a lots of crbonation visible on the sides of the glass. Head rises and fades fast, leaving a ring of foam. Smell is grassy and pretty standard for a euro lager. Taste is also right on with the style. Brilliant grassy flavors, give way to a slight metallic twang, and a little hop presence. Mouthfeel is well carbonated, and alright. Drinkable, yet unimaginitive and somewhat boring.

Appearance - Light gold with fine carbonation. 1 finger of head which reduced.

Smell - Delicate corn-like malts, backed up with a touch of fruity hops.

Taste - Very mild, but the quality and near flawlessness of the malt and hops is quite noticeable.

Mouthfeel - Extremely light bodied, like a Helles should be. Possibly the lightest beer I have tried. Smooth with a good carbonation level.

Drinkability - The only thing preventing this beer from getting a 5 in this category is that it is a little too bland to enjoy over and over again.

Overall - Definitely on the lower end of the flavour scale of European lagers, but still a quality Helles.
