LOOK: Tiny bubbles, black, big head

SMELL: Charcoal, faintly acrid, Mexican chocolate, burnt raisins

TASTE: Slick, creamy, smooth, medium body, tart, burnt toast, semi-acrid, mild oat sweetness, modest hopping, grapeskin; burnt, dry-ish finish

Dedicated to the collapse of “The Old Man of the Mountain,” granite ledges in the White Mountains of New Hampshire that looked like an old man. A bit off kilter but still noticeably within the style. We’d hoped for more balance, but the burnt flavors wanted to take over with each sip.

Climbed the carriage trail with this one on 7/26/2004. 16-oz. pour at the Woodstock Inn Brewery in a shaker glass.

An eighth of an inch, creamy, mocha-colored head, and very tight; thought we might be able to stand a quarter on top of it, and one of my so-called friends, Jim, tried to do just that, much to my chagrin. Deep, unfathomable, jet-black hue that Kumar said reminded him of the dark side of the moon. Jumpy blackberry and junipers on tongue, with a creamsicle sweetness following afterwards that dissipated quickly with little clinging. Further notes of charred oak with some roasting peat that were pleasant additions. A medium-bodied, and very clean, stout.

On tap at the Woodstock Inn on a recent vacation to NH.
Nice looking oatmeal stout, dark, essentially opaque, with decent creamy tan head. Aroma is of cocoa and vanilla. Taste is initially OK, but yields to the same problem as the Pemi's Pale Ale -- an unappetizing musty, buttery flavor. Here it is at least offset by some decent nutty and chocolate notes. The mouthfeel is good and the drinkability is average. Best of their beers I tried, but not saying much.

Blue Echo and I swung by the Woodstock Inn and Brewery after hiking up Cannon Mt. We were in the mood for something dark and hearty, and the oatmeal stout seemed the best bet. The obsidian brew was poured into a takll shaker glass, with a lingering nitro-tap head. The brew looks like a beer for guiness fans, but packs more flavor and body. The aroma is of burnt grains and the flavor profile is a bit more complex, but not outstanding. The dominant notes are burnt malts, oatmeal, and nuts. There are some subtle chocolate and toffee flavors and a bit of a sourdough finish. It's a solid, full bodied, and drinkable brew.

I tried a pint of this last night on draft.

A---It was a muddy dark brown with a little white head.

S---Esters, burnt malt, butterscotch.

T---Fruity ringwood yeast and a little roasted malt in the front then finished very sour sour.

M---It was full bodied and silky smooth.

D---The creamy texture of this stout is its best attribute. The roasted malt seems like an afterthought. I tried most of their offerings last night and this was IMO the best.

While they were putting a new keg of the brown ale on, I had a couple of these. It started out well. Nice dark brown to black color with a thick, sticky, tan head. A roasted malt/coffee aroma, kind of muted. The taste was similar to the aroma, but it had a harsh feel, as if it had been burned. Not a very enjoyable beer.

Poured into an imperial pint glass. Poured a completely black, looked slightly translucent, with a thick 2 finger foamy head. Small amounts of carbonation rose from the bottom. Aroma was a fruity floral sweet, backended by an oatmeal bread. Taste was extremely bitter, very small bit of milky lactose to finish it up. Felt good in the mouth, maybe just a tad thin, but not bad. Overall was disappointing. Outside of the bitter flavor was a decent stout, but the extreme bitterness killed it. Best by Sept, 2012.

Had this one on 12/26/06 at Harlow's Pub in Peterborough,NH

AP: looks hefty, deep and dark. Pitch black color, with a remarkably smooth and even mocha-frothy head. The head very dense and very smooth, much like an Irish Stout i.e Guinness and Murphy's Draught style.

Nose: Nutty scented malt with cream, mild chocolate and oak scents.

Taste: The first hit is a mildly bitter roastie malt and nutty flavor with slight vanilla current, charcoal...much roastieness!!. There is also some red wine like sourness as well in the finish.

MF: Very dry, Full body. Ultra smooth and thick feeling.

DA: This is a very easy to drink style and one of my favorite's. This one looks and feels good, but the overall flavor was sub par at best. For me to NOT want another Oatmeal Stout is very strange.

Pours a fairly solid black color with a creamy tan head on top. Smells a bit sweet, roasty with chocolate, caramel butterscotch and earthy hops playing supporting roles. The taste is kind of a mess. Roasted grains atop a mountain of butterscotch gives a really unpleasant burnt toffee kind of taste to it. Medium body and level of carbonation with a sweet burnt mouthfeel. I couldn't finish this one and the rest of the bottle ended up down the drain. If your going to play with ringworm yeast do a diacetyl rest or something to quell that horrible buttery aroma and flavor.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass. Good till December 2012.

A real aggressive head, lots of large bubbles, makes six fingers deep of suds, holding up and staying around for a good period, creamy and very weak meringue like looking. Color is a real deep cookie milk/dark chocolate brown head. Body is a very dark walnut black, maybe a hint of red in there too.

Nose is a mild fruit, hints of raspberry and plum, a dense malt body and mild roast. Pretty solid bouquet here.

oh dear lord.. This is umm... sour as all friggin and infected. Massive sourness and not in a fun, genuine, fruit or intended way. Mouthfeel is what it is perfectly fine, but I can't even say more because I can't even hold this liquid in my palate for 2 seconds without spitting it out. Medicinal sour, beyond tart. There is NOTHING stout like or even beer like resemblance in this at all.

This has got to be one of the most unpleasant experiences I've had in a beer in ages. I could not even swallow this beer. Yikes totally undrinkable.

Poured at Woodstock Inn Brewery

Appearance: 1/4 inch head, dark brown in color, opaque

Smell: roasted malt and chocolate

Taste: light and creamy start, with coffee and dark chocolate coming in the middle

Mouthfeel: low carbonation, medium body, sweet start with bitter middle and dry finish

Overall: Probably one of the least oaty oatmeal stouts I have had. Maybe it gets lost in the cask. Not a bad beer, but considering how many outstanding beers come from Woodstock, not one of my favorites either.

Pours deep brown with a tan foamy head that reduces to a ring. Nice.

Really nice nose on this. Dark roasted malt, charred notes, a little molasses.

Wow, what a letdown. All the nose notes are present on the palate. Charred smoky dark roasted malt, but there is a sour edge to this. Not bad bottle sour, but sour grain. The bitter coffee fights thru and it finishes deep and bitter, but that sour kills this. My scoring is really kind.

A tad thin, and over-carbonated. The tingling on the tongue makes the sour worse.

Overall, plenty of potential, but plenty of disappointment. I like these brewers, and have been to the brewery a number of times. But this brew is a real dog. $5.00 for a bomber, and I feel cheated.

From a 22 oz. bottle with an expiration date of May 2012. Sampled on March 9, 2012. The pour is about as oily black as an oatmeal stout should be with an adequate mocha head. I'll give the apperance a 5. The aroma is enriched with dark malts, oatmeal, and coffee grinds. The body is thinner than I would like in a stout. The flavor also has a coffee-like character with a bitter and moderately dry finish. It is not all that bad.

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass. Pours pitch black with a light brown head. Smells of chocolate and coffee, with very slight fruitiness. Tastes of raisins, and other fruits, more sour than expected; very slight chocolate. Beer is lightly carbonated with light/medium body, but a bit of a sour aftertaste. Overall, a slightly above average beer.

Black with a smooth blanket tan head. Great retention but not the perfection I expect from a nitro tap.

Smells like dark roast malt. Tastes like it too. Light body, a bit water if you're looking for a dense, chewy stout.

My favorite from Woodstock Inn. It's neither complex nor chewy but I love it as a sessionable stout when the mood hits for dark beer.

A fine way to wash down a Moosilauke summit.
