500ml bottle. MHB: 16.03.12.

The pours is more reminiscent of coke than beer. It literally looks exactly like cola, the head sticks for a bit longer but other than that exactly the same, and I don't like it.

The smell is raisny with some slight hop presence and some dough.

The flavor an body is also reminiscent of soda, perhaps a root beer. This is utterly confusing.

This beer just sucks.

.5L, best before 4/20/12.

Pours a murky chestnut brown with reddish highlights. The head is off-white and creamy, retaining nicely at a finger and with good lacing.

The aroma has nice notes of cocoa, toasted malt, and fresh bread.

The flavor is okay. At first it seems very nice and dry-chocolatey, but then nothing else develops on the palate. A bit thin and watery overall. Slightly metallic finish. The mouthfeel is soda-like and just weak sauce.

Not the worst Schwarzbier I've had, but still average at best. Drinkable.

A hazy brown colored beer. An off-white head with good lacing and some curtains.

Smelling of bread, dates, coffee and licorice.

Tasting of dark toasted bread, figs, coffee and some soy sauce.

Medium carbonation, a soft texture. A small body with a somewhat dry finish.

Very average.

I bought this beer a few weeks ago when i was in Berlin. There was a nice shop which had a lot of the local beers, mostly Pilsneners bult also some black beers like this one. I had one of their beers a few months ago which was not so good. Hoping this one is better.

Poured in my small Struise glass the beer looks ok with a sizzling creamy head which disappears in a minute or so, a little retention. Fluid is like cola with no carbonation.

Smell is a bit odd but with some hints of coffee far away. Taste is a bit watery with the ingredients well hidden, too well if you ask me.

Review: 0.5l Bottle of Stortebeker Schwarz bier: ABV : 5%

Lovely looking bottle, logo of a ship, really well done and stands out.

As expected got a striking black colour on pour, but also interestingly some shades of dark red. Got a porter style tan head, which was large and very creamy. Head maintains well. Some nice lacing. Not a bad looking beer.

Lovely initial smell, was really pleasant, of roasted malts, some fruits and sweet coffee. Also got some dark chocolate on the nose. A nice balance of rustic smells. Good start.

On taste is very similar to porter, and very, very smooth. No real feel of the alcohol, at least initially. Nearly too smooth for my liking as I do like to feel some alcohol now and again, especially in a slow burner like this. No bitterness.
Safe, nothing extraordinary
Black chocolate found. Tastes light. Nice though all the same. Caramel taste apparent as well.
Nice large mouthfuls.
It is a nice beer to drink and I did enjoy drinking it.

Strong in the end, after the two bottles. Good and can do the business, but not going to set the world alight in terms of strong tastes as it is a little thin, but if it just added a bit more it could be a stand out beer as it does lack a little depth or flavour, a pity

I see they won the best black beer in Europe, a “European Beer Star” in 2010 and 2011. Frankly, that is taking the piss, lol!

Pours a hazelnut brown to black color, together with a beige, bubbly lacing, coating the edge of the glass.

Has aromas of dried walnut shell, bread, rock sugar and a note of milk chocolate. All in all the nose comes well together promising a sweeter, malt relying beer.

Has a soft mouthfeel among a lighter body, which features many Dunkel qualities in a well put together way, ranging from bready to toffeeish sweet.

Begins with slightly tart milk chocolate, coming along with a soft bread and earth malt foundation, which turns sweeter, revealing toffee qualities right before the swallow. Gets added a portion of rock sugar during the finish, balanced by earthy marzipan and bakers chocolate, preventing the beer from becoming overly sweet.

Solid beer, with a pleasant finish, absorbing a lot of the prominent sweetness, adding a nice depth to the taste.

The colour is dark brown (80 EBC), the liquid is clear. There is some yeast sediment in the bottle. The two finger head is pale beige. Good retention, some lacing.

The smell is dry and roasted, almost burned. Some raw rye sourness and hints of cocoa. It is clean and balanced, maybe a little weak.

The taste is roasted/toasted with malty flavours of dark rye bread/Pumpernickel and a touch of salt liquorice. The body is light. Light clean bitter notes and hints of raspberry jam in the aftertaste, as well as some chocolate and wholemeal bread. Yeast in the short finish.

The carbonation is medium strong, the large bubbles short-lived. The liquid is rather light.

In a blind tasting, I would definitely have taken this for a 3-4 % English or Danish porter. Not as refreshing or hoppy as the best Schwarzbiers.

Störtebecker's Schwarzbier redeemed them a little. I'd had this beer a few years ago and had been impress. But today, it was malty, but on tap, was too sweet malty, roasted flavors yes, but too sweet. It could also have been bitterer. Though my memories are faded after 2 years and I expected more, a 3+.

BB 07-03-06. Nice head and a black beercolor makes presentation stylelike. Nose is sweet malty without showing much roast. Pineapple arome, sweetish, cardboard but overall not that much to detect as sweet malts. Taste is also malty sweet but thick and full with low dosed bitterness. Litle burnt taste but missing bitterness as it is IMO missed litle in the whole brew also. Mouthfeel is even cause off thickness ov brew in my opinion litle dull and pale but certainly drinkable.

L: Pours very dark with minimal, tan head. Very dark but not opaque. Some light passes through when held up. No appreciable viscosity.
S: Coffee, toasted malt, dried fruit. Expected more of an intense flavor, but just falls flat.
T: Mediocre. Some toast/dried fruit one would expect from a porter, additional aftertaste that is not that pleasant.
F: Oily, aftertaste and feel lasts for a while. If the aftertaste was more pleasant, I wouldn't mind as much.
O: Was hoping for more. It's Ok.

Heavy light beer, 0,5 liter bottle bough on a recent trip to Germany.
Very dark brown beer with a thin but creamy head.
Roasty malt grain and nutts in the smell and taste.. It's light on the abv. but it does go for a full flavour.
Overall: good balance between sweet malt and roasty bitterness. Nevertheless this is a beer that lacks depth. It's a bit common. It's ok, but nothing special.
Drinkable.

A decent schwarzbier from Germany. Poured deep brown, some reddish hues with back lighting. Faint head faded quickly, but left a fair amount of lacing on the glass. Mild roast grain flavor, but no aftertaste.Seems a bit more watery than some of the others I've had.Still a good example of the style, and nice to have a dark, cold winter day.

A: a very very dark red color. not much head.

S: Rubbing alcohol, rubber, sweet. and something else behind it that i can't discern.

T: Not heavy on flavor. Initially it tastes a bit like a watered down berry vanilla soda. Slight bitter coffee afterward.

M: heavier bodied, yet doesn't sit too heavy inside you.

D: pretty ok.
