I picked up a bottle of Thirsty Dog's Labrador Lager last week for $1.59 at The Lager Mill. I have been pretty satisfied with all the Thirsty Dog beers I have had so far so I thought I should try the only other beer from them that the store had that I haven't tried before, so lets see how it goes. No visible bottling date. Poured from a 12oz brown bottle into a imperial pint glass.

A- The label looks good, but I am Labrador owner so I'm a little biased. It poured a a pale golden yellow color that was fairly clear and it had a half a fingers worth of white head that quickly died down to a very thin ring that stayed till the end. The color was true to style but the head was pretty disappointing.

S- The first thing that I picked up was loads of sweet malts that impart a sweet grainy, and slightly bready aroma. After that comes a light amount of hops that impart a light earthy and grassy aroma. The aroma was somewhat on track for the style then the sweetness came which seemed to be way too sweet for the style.

T- The tastes seems to be almost exactly the same as the aroma. It starts off with loads of very sweet malts that impart an overly sweet grainy and biscuit taste that is a little similar to a Malt Liquor. After that comes a very slight amount of earthy and grassy hops that are easy to miss. The finish seemed to have hardly any bitterness and in it's place was lots of sweetness and a sweet grainy aftertaste. The taste is pretty boring and way too sweet, I'm not digging it.

M- Not too smooth, a little cloying, on the medium side of being light bodied, and it had a high amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel wasn't that impressive and it was a little over carbonated.

Overall I wasn't impressed with this beer and I thought that it wasn't a good example of a Dortmunder, the flavors were bland and there was way too much sweetness that seemed to dominate everything else. This beer doesn't have good drinkability, it doesn't hold my interest and is way too sweet, one is more then enough for me. What I liked most about this beer was the label, it's pretty sad that the label was the best thing about this beer, but that's the truth. What I liked least about this beer was pretty much everything else, there wasn't one part of this beer that didn't have some issues and the sweetness really hurt it. I wouldn't buy this beer again, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. This seems to be the first miss that I have had from this brewery, it just missed the mark on what a good Dortmunder should be like, and so far this is my least favorite Dortmunder I have had with Great Lakes Dortmunder gold still being my favorite, and this beer isn't even remotely as good as Great Lakes Dortmunder. I took a chance on this beer and it didn't turn out how I thought it would, oh well you can't win them all, better luck next time Thirsty Dog.

This beer pours a clear, gold color with thin head, no lace. The aroma has faint hints of dough and pine. It's flavor is grassy with a bit of citrus with a dry crisp finish. The mouthfeel is light-medium. Thirsty Dog Labrador Lager is an average beer, sessionable and refreshing. Slightly recommended.

Clear, light golden color. Moderate head that settles to a single layer of bubbles. Low lace, spotty.

Dry, raw grain aroma. Possibly some light colored crystal. Low, low hop.

Highly carbonated, giving it a crisp mouthfeel. I thought I had smelled the telltale signs of adjuncts. Here, I think the taste confirms it. Overall, a very dry beer. There's some bittering hop flavor in the aftertaste.

A: Beer pours a straw color topped by a nice white head that dissipates into a thin layer and leaves nice lacing.

S: Grainy, no hops at all. Unfortunately, that's it.

T: Tastes a little grainy with a touch of carbonation bite. Hops are little to none of a somewhat floral flavor. Despite my descriptors, it doesn't taste half bad.

M: Mouthfeel is not bad, light bodied and moderately-high carbonation.

D: It goes down easily, and it quite quaffable. I like it.

Live review. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into my Murphy's Irish Red pint glass. Bottle purchased as a single at Heinen's in Willoughby Hills, Ohio a few weeks ago for $1.50.

A Basic lager body with a bit more yellow color but a nice creamy head on top of that. 3.5

S Kind of a distant, very basic lager smell. 2.0

T Awfully basic lager taste of barley malt, very little if any hops. Dissapointing really. 3.0

M Thin to moderate. 3.0

D Good but this is not my favorite style. 4.0

Notes: The second less than stellar beer out of Thirsty Dog (had their Barktoberfest recently). These were the first two Thirsty Dog beers that did not really impress me. I found there Cerebrus 10 and Siberian Night to be exemplary.

12 ounce bottle - $2.49 at Total Wine & More in Greenville, South Carolina.

Appearance: Dispensed a gold body displaying good clarity with about an inch of white suds.

Smell: A light touch of softly bready, cereal sweet maltiness. Even lighter in the hop department, just a faint bit of lemon and dried herb. Subdued yeasty vibe throughout.

Taste: Sweetish tasting cereal malts. Very modest hops expressing a little lemon and light florals. Near nil bitterness. A bit of sweetness remains on the somewhat languid finish.

Mouthfeel: Light-bodied. Medium-low carbonation.

Overall: Uninspired. Not so great in the flavor department, could use more crispness and it's overpriced to boot.

12 ounce bottle. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a clear gold color with about a half inch off-white head that stayed around a little while. There's a small amount of lacing. The brew smells like bready and sweet malt, and some light grassy hops. It tastes like bready and sweet malt. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it's a bit creamy with a moderate amount of carbonation. It goes down easy enough. This certainly isn't one of the better Dortmunder Lagers I've had. It's not a bad beer by any means, but there's nothing about this that would make me want to buy it again.

A very light copper, very clear, with little head that has no short retention.

Nice smell, some flowery scents, but also some orange undertones.

No one taste jumps out at you, just the flowery, earthy hops.

Despite the minimal head retention, this beer has good lacing. The feeling in the mouth is more medium-bodied than you'd expect from the color. It's got a crisp, refreshing feel, and ends with a touch of bitter in the swallow.

A very indifferent beer. Not bad, not great, just middle of the road. Reasonably drinkable.

from Half Time cooler,Pours mid-yellow body with some white foamish head. Aroma is a bit of strong yeast, some malts. Middling mouthfeel. Tastes so-so,minerally, somewhat apple, grassy hops though 20 IBU, not overally drinkable. You have to be in the mood for this, maybe that's not having a beer all week and it's hot.

12oz bottle into a Boston Lager glass pours a crisp, very bubbly orange with a decent eggshell head that diminishes to a thin layer and leaves nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is crisp sweet malts with a Worther's Original like caramel scent to it. The taste is an overabundance of sweet malts, not quite cloying, but almost. The beer is medium bodied with decent carbonation, but the sweetness gets in the way. This is one that smell's WAY better than it tastes, not anything I would have again.

Picked up a single from Abe's Cold Beer. Pours a clear gold amber with a short white head that leaves a bit of lacing. The malt is disappointingly plain with a mild bready cake taste and aroma. The hops do a little better and bring both floral citrus and a little grassy herb forward and long into the aftertaste. Smooth and drinkable, but unremarkable aside from some pleasant hop character.

A: Pours a crisp clear golden color with light thin head.Sadly no retention.

S: Aroma is of malt, sweet grassy, and a bit of Earthyness.

T: First thing you get is a wash of sweet buttery flavor, followed by light earthy taste then the malts hit. Followed by some hops.

M: Medium bodied with little carbonation.

O: Overall a very easy, drinkable beer, would have more of these ... Thirst Dog. Mmmm

12oz bottle poured into pint glass.

Pours golden straw, with a thin white head which disappears quickly. Seems very carbonated. Aroma has all the typical notes of a lager, light slightly sweet, and bready. The taste is very fruity at the tounge, which turns to a bready bitterness in the finish. This is middle of the road for me, I've had lagers that are better and worse. Overall I would like to see the bready malt kicked up a notch to balance the sweetness.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of grains and malts. Taste is crisp, grains, some malts, a tad sweet, just a touch of hops. Feels light in the mouth and overall is an easy drinking and pretty good beer.

In Cleveland and tried the Labrador from Thirsty Dog. The beer poured clear golden color with some white foamish head that left some lace. The smell is a bit of strong yeast, some malts. The taste is typical of most Dortmunders, some fruit, grassy hops. The mouthfeel is light in body and good carbonation. Overall it is a decent beer and can be sessioned easily.

12oz bottle served in shaker pint

A: Bright golden color. Mostly clear. Decent sized ivory head displays fair retention.

S: Very mild. Sweet malt, a little grain, and faint hops.

T: Crisp and rather sweet, in a moreish way. Very approachable flavors. Not much by way of hops, but enough to prevent imbalance.

M: Light bodied with a slightly creamy feel. Carbonation is appropriate.

O: Pretty accurate to style. Quite quaffable.

Pours a brilliant deep golden with a lingering, frothy, cream head.

Grain, sweet corn, and lightly toasted bread form the initial aroma. Earthy, slightly floral hops are subtle.

Flavor reveals more floral hop notes at the forefront, which rest on a grainy, lightly toasted, crackery malt backbone. There's a sour apple note at the base that is offputting. I have no idea how old this beer is, so hopefully it's an age thing.

Body and carbonation are moderate, with a crisp lager finish.

Very sessionable, basic, refreshing lager. The floral hop notes are nice, but that tangy acetaldehyde note kind of ruins it.

12 ounce bottle into lager glass, no bottle dating. Pours lightly cloudy deep gold color with a 1 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a large amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of cracker, biscuit, honey, pear, apple, herbal, floral, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of bready malt, earthy hop, and yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of cracker, biscuit, honey, herbal, floral, light pepper, light pear/apple, and yeast earthiness. No bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of cracker, biscuit, honey, herbal, floral, light pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance and robustness of bready malt, earthy hop, and yeast ester flavors; with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and lightly bready mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a good dortmunder style. Good balance and robustness of malt, hop, and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A pleasantly enjoyable offering.

A: The beer is clear deep yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a thin white head that faded away, leaving only a bit of bubbles on the surface.
S: There are light to moderate aromas of fruity yeast in the nose-apple juice stands out in particular.
T: Like the smell, the taste has flavors of apple juice and notes of biscuity malts. There are some slight hints of grassy hops and bitterness towards the finish: these become a bit stronger as the beer warms up.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and clean on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is a bit of dryness in the finish.
O: This beer seems to be a bit heavier compared to other beers in the style but it is still very easy to drink.

A: The beer was poured with a slightly tan half finger of head on top of a crystal clear copper body.

S: The beer has a malty aroma as well as a fruity and hoppy aroma.

T: The taste is rather sweet, but there is a bit of a fruit flavor as well as a bit of hop bitterness.

M: Slightly lower than desired carbonation and a decent body that is thin to medium body.

D: The beer comes of as slightly too sweet and with an almost cloying finish that really ruins the drinkability. Also, the lower than desired carbonation hurts drinkability.

Appearance: Pours a clear golden color with a two inch cap that leaves a few shards behind

Smell: Bready, with a fruity, slightly lemony hue

Taste: Bready, up front, with the faint lemony hop flavors adding some balance to the sweet cracker malt; finishes a bit more to the sweet side than I thought it would

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with crisp carbonation

Overall: A decent enough Dortmunder, though I would like to see a bit more hop balance

Not entirely translucent, a pale amber/gold. Foamy white head is shortly lived.

Due in part to the shortly lived head, the scent on this beer is pretty vague. Some spiced malt hits the noce.

Spices, malt, and a dry bitter hop hit the moth.

The yeast might be a little heavy on this, which would explain the bready taste and the fog.

Goes down smooth enough.

Definately not my favorite Dortmundner. I've only tried three so far, but the other two I've had blow this one away. (Great Lakes and Two Brothers)

Appearance: pseudo opaque amber with an egg white head. Sticky lacing. Looks good.

Smell: toasty sweet in the nose. Honey, caramel, maybe a splinter of diacetyl, floral moments, and flashes of bitter-sweet fruit tones.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Light, sweet and a touch bitter up front. Honey-like sweetness. Fairly balanced with malts just barely weighing in heavier. Delicate. A peppermint spice hops flavor sits quietly in the middle, almost unannounced. Honey is king of this brew.

Notes: A bit too sweet for my current interest in drier German-style lagers. I was hoping for a little more bittering hops.

A: The name fits, pours a nice golden yellow, like the Yellow lab on the front. A this white head sticks around for a short amount of time.

S: Malt and a sweet caramel.

T: It has a nutty, sweet, malt flavor. A bitter bite at the end.

M: Very crisp, but also a little creamy with nice carbonation.

D: Good. Can drink a bunch of these, low ABV, enjoyable taste.

12 oz. bottle with no freshness date: the lager poured a clear, very deep golden to almost amber with a nice, foamy slightly off-white sustained head. This one is about as deep golden as Great Lakes Dortmunder gold.

The disappointment with this beer is the smell. When I removed the cap from the bottle, I could detect no aroma at all. After pouring into a stein, I did detect some perfumy aromas but little else.

This is right on style: heavier than a helles with an emphasis on malt. Overall, a hefty lager with just enough hop to balance the sweetness. There is a little grainy flavor as well. The lager remains refreshing as it warms in the glass.

This lager has a heavier body than most dortmunder style lagers with a slightly thick and sweet mouthfeel. The carbonation is very restrained for a lager.

The malt profile and refreshing flavor is ideal for a hot summer day. I could enjoy this one any time of the year. It is good to see more breweries producing this style.
