Bourbon Barrel Aged Siberian Night Imperial StoutBourbon Barrel Aged Siberian Night Imperial Stout
Notes: We took our award winning Siberian Night Russian Imperial Stout and aged it for 11 months in fresh bourbon barrels. The result blew us away. The dark chocolate malt yields a milk chocolate flavor that blends perfectly with the vanilla flavor from the barrel. The bourbon aroma adds the finishing touch.

Picked up a 12 oz single from TW-Greenville SC on 7-19-21 for $2.99. No bottling date; consumed 10-19-21.

Beer poured black as night with a nice tan head with the original pour.

Nose is full of roasted malts, bourbon, and leather, very nice!

Taste is a large roasted malt base with a nice warming infusion of bourbon that brings out the chocolate from the malt base along with a touch of leather and vanilla. Finishes nicely balanced and not sweet.

Mouthfeel is medium to large bodied and silky smooth like the non BA version i had yesterday.

Overall the barrel aging was beneficial making the base brew more flavorful. Definitely will watch for this next go around assuming the barrel aging release in annualized!

Pours a deep dark black color with beige edges and a half finger of head. The nose has soft bourbon notes. The bourbon is not as present in the flavor profile as the nose might indicate, but it's still there adding a sweet note to the chocolatey taste. The mouth feel is slightly sticky.

My only negative is that the big roasted notes of the base beer seem somewhat muted here.

Poured into my snifter glass out of a 11 oz. bottle. This beer pours a very dark brown, practically black color with a silky looking tan head that's about an inch thick when first poured and that settles eventually to a very thick ring lining the inside of the glass along with some cluster swirls of film layer surface foam. Decent lacing. Aromas of roasted malts, some chocolate, coffee and vanilla notes, and a nice bourbon oak presence. The taste is pretty much exactly the same, starting out with a nice roasted malt presence followed by chocolate and vanilla notes. next up is some milk sugar goodness and then the flavor profile is rounded out by some oak bourbon and a bit of a boozy note. The 10.9% ABV is very well integrated here. The coffee bitterness and a bit of an earthy hop presence comes out more as the beer warms up a bit. An excellent flavor profile. Has a slightly crisp, mostly smooth, frothy, full bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. An excellent beer. Very drinkable for the style.

I got a bottle of this beer off the single shelf from my local Giant Eagle store. It poured an opaque dark with no head and no lace. The scent had wonderful Russian stout notes with bourbon highlights. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with strong molasses, vanilla, subtle cocoa with bourbon flare. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall its a solid beer.

12 oz bottle with no date (pretty sure its a 2018) poured into a snifter at 56 degrees F:
L - Black as the siberian night (I've been there), head dissipated quickly
S - bourbon, and a bit of caramel
T - the bourbon hits you immediately and then the malt flavor slides in. Wonderfully balanced
F - Medium mouthfeel with slight carbonation throughout
O - great beer, 2 or so years in the flavors are still blending very well

Looks like this is from 2018. Disappointing, I don't generally think barrel-aged stouts aged particularly well.

The body and barrel notes were kinda thin, but there is plenty to like here. Some fudge, bourbon soaked cherries, and vanilla are all very nice. The finish is a bit hot with woody bitterness.

12 ounce bottle into a snifter. Assuming it’s from 2018, had 11/28/18.

Pours an opaque, deep brown with a one and a half inch thick foamy head with good retention and lots of foamy lacing. Aromas of dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, molasses, bourbon, some oak and char, some vanilla and cocoa, light licorice. The flavor begins with bourbon- much more than the nose, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, char, molasses, roasted malt, oak, lighter coffee and vanilla than the aroma, some caramel and cocoa. Smooth, a little creamy, a good full body, well carbonated.

Great barrels that don’t overwhelm, a great aroma, lots of different smells and tastes. This is best fully warmed. Very enjoyable and well worth a purchase.

Pours pitch black, nearly impervious to light. Nice 2 finger foamy kaki head that slowly fades. Nice chocolate aroma, a little yeasty. Flavor is rich chocolate, dark roasted malt, coffee, bourbon, bitter espresso finish. Carbonation lends itself to a creamy texture. Overall a good BA Stout, aged very nicely. A bit on the sweet side.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of black chocolate notes with some woody notes with vanilla and bourbon notes clearly identifiable. Taste is a mix of chocolate with some residual sugar notes offset by strong woody notes with some vanilla and bourbon notes with light warming alcohol notes also perceptible. Body is about average with oily texture and good carbonation with light warming alcohol notes. Wonderful BA imperial stout and it really shows that it spent some time in quality bourbon barrels.

Thirsty Dog - BBA Siberian Night

Dated 6/06/17 - poured into a chianti stem at 50F

Pours a thin-looking, deep dep brown, that rests pitch ink black in the glass, with zero light penetration. A finger of foamy chocolate milk colored head rests atop, eventually sizzling out to a collar. 4.5/5

Nose is rich and fudgy, chocolate malt, huge vanilla, big barrel presence, high-rye bourbon, and that big, beautiful dark fruit aroma that I've only gotten from BCBS. Most big BA stouts bring coffee to the nose, which I'm not a fan of, and they lack the rich dark fruit character. This has zero coffee, and big notes of dried cherries, currant, blackberry, and boysenberry. 4.75/5

Palate greets you with an immediate dark chocolate fudge flavor. Moderately sweet, with a balanced touch of roast. The barrel treatment is immediately evident, and delightfully forward. All of the vanilla/bourbon/oaky/char/spice notes that a bourbon barrel should relay. While the barrel characteristics are still dancing over the palate, these juicy, deep, dark fruit notes surface. Prune, dried cherry, currant, blackberry, blueberry, boysenberry, plum. All those fruit notes that the nose hinted at, become a fulfilled promise on the palate. For this reason, this is truly very reminiscent of BCBS. It's not quite as sweet or thick, syrupy, and viscous, but the flavor profile is quite similar. 4.5/5

Mouthfeel is slightly thick and viscous - enough to where one needn't complain about thin-ness or "watery". It isn't syrupy, but it has very nice body. There's also a pretty decent carbonation level, for having spent nearly a year in a barrel, and then over a year in the bottle. The not-quite-syrupy feel of this actually aids it in being a little more drinkable than say a super thick stout like BCBS. I find very little flaw here. 4.25/5

Overall, this one honestly surprised me. Quite pleasantly, I might add. I've had many a BA stout, and fairly often, I'm left disappointed. BCBS is the holy grail for me. It has everything you could possibly want. This right here, is hardly two steps behind. It's lacks the serious wow factor and complexity that BCBS has, but it's still nothing to scoff at. This is a seriously great BA Imperial stout, and it deserves high regard. Damn near - if not - world class. 4.5/5

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into an Alesmith tulip

L: Inky black pour. 1 solid finger of brownish head leaves a thin rim of lacing.

S: Charred grains and sugars. Bourbon, vanilla, and cocoa. Rich and boozy.

T/F: Rich... sweet burned sugars and roasted malts. Bitter dark chocolate and espresso... boozy... strong presence of bourbon, oak, and vanilla. Warming... modest carbonation... on point for the style.

O: A rich and delicious big barrel aged stout. Has everything you'd want from the style. Most worthy.

Plum-tinted black with a thin finger of soupy mocha head. Messy lacing.

Light aroma of creamy chocolate and a hint of vanilla.

Smooth tasting: vanilla, chocolate, a touch of almond, toffee and cherry. Not at all hot.

Medium bodied with a lightly creamy feel and modest carbonation.

For something called Siberian Nights, I was expecting a bit more alcohol heat to warm me up. Still a quality beer, perfect for someone who prefers a light touch on the barrel aging.

In a world full of world-class barrel-aged stouts, this one is just too unrefined & hot to pass the mustard. The bourbon overwhelms the other flavors, and it tastes like cheap bourbon to boot. By no means awful but lacks the depth & robust profile you want from a top notch beer these days.
