12 oz bottle, purchased from a reputable bottle shop, 7/2011, and well stored.

Poured into a Dogfish Head Snifter, Signature glass

Pours a nice 3/8” head, which slowly reduces to a thin cap, easily revived with a swirl of the glass and this “re-heading” lasts as long as the first pour.
Very, very deep, brownish/black, color. You cannot see thru it.

Big aroma of rich roasted malt, dark unsweetened chocolate, cocoa, some light yeast, a mild smell of nuts. There is a lot going on here, quite complex.

Distinct, rich roasted malt and chocolate entry on the palate, big mouth feel, a very nice RIS style of bitterness throughout the pour, as the ale warms a sense of incredible richness dominates the flavor. Excellent light carbonation in keeping with this style of brew, despite the weight of this ale it does not bloat you.

Very long finish of dark chocolate, black roasted malt, cocoa and some mild bitterness. Excellent!

Wow! Tried this even though some of my circle of “beer enthusiasts” did not think it was that great. I don’t know what they were drinking but this beer is right up there with the BA favorites.
It seems to me that a lot of people drink RIS entirely to cold. It doesn’t really start to open up and release its charms until it reaches 55 degrees and just gets better as it warms even more.
I believe that this is the equal of Old Rasputin for sure and will give several of the top choices in RIS a “run for the money”.
Very rich, complex, and flat out delicious. Nowhere is the 9.7% ABV even remotely noticeable, would you please pour me another!

Pours black with brown rim.

The smell is roasted coffee, molasses, brown sugar, and a touch of alcohol.

The taste follows the smell pretty closely. On the front a slight bitterness that mostly seems from the malt. The middle comes and goes fairly quick with brown sugar. The back lingers a roasted/burnt malt and straight black coffee for a long while after each sip.

Pretty awesome overall and I plan on buying more for sure.

Pours very dark, into more of a soy sauce hue than the usual. Head is decent and holds up for the duration of the drink.

Not the nicest smell in regards to the hops. They come across as a bit bad and musty. The malt bill however seems very rich and lures you in easily.

The taste in one word is roasty. It really doesn't have much of the bitterness that's usually associated with roastiness though. The roastiness battles with the caramel malt and the only winner is your taste buds. The drink is exceptionally balanced and it skyrockets the drinkability. I can drink this stuff almost as easily as a lager, while not being able to miss the flavor. The chocolate flavor and coffee seems quite abundant as well. Had I knew this was so impressive, I'd have picked up more for sure.

The mouthfeel is moderately full and the carbonation does a decent job improving the body while not intruding much at all. The finish is fairly dry with slight stickiness.

Overall, this one really caught me by surprise. Most of the time when I see the ratebeer and BA stickers in stores I disregard them or even laugh at them, but this stout flew below my radar until this point. I expect to get more of these and see how they age.

A: blacker than black with a nice finger width tan head. Looks nice.
S: I get some sweet chocolaty note accompanied by loads fresh coffee. A tad bit of booze peeks through as well. All told, its smells fantastic and begs to be tasted.
T: starts off with some slighty bitter dark chocolate and slides into coffee and some sweet chocolate notes. This fades into a boozy and slighty bitter finish. It is extremely tasty.
M: full bodied and slick, light any imperial stout should be. Not filling like you may expect.
O: A fine beer. It doesn't try to be something its not and doesn't stray from what makes it great to live up to the imperial name. Its not overloaded with hops, chocolate or coffee, but manages to find a great symmetry between the three. A tasty, flavorful brew that will be purchased again.

Nice frothy head that dissipates into a thin ring on the edges of the glass. This stout is the black hole of beers...darker than dark. Smells like dark chocolate brownies just out of the oven. Lots of coffee notes to it. Tastes like the aforementioned chocolate and coffee but also very strong molasses flavor to it. Nice carbonation as well. Definitely taste the coffee with a touch of that alcohol kick on back end of this one that lingers a bit. Wonder what a bit of aging might do for this one.

Pours black with a big chocolate head.

Smells of coffee, cream, and oatmeal.

Tastes sweet with loads of creamed coffee and chocolate. Creamed coffee in the finish. Nice bitter pine and coffee finish. This is pretty damn tasty.

The feel is appropriately creamy and full-bodied.

Overall this is tasty as hell and very drinkable. Great brew!

Poured basement temp into flared glass

A: buoyant head; solid black (what else?); great carbonation
S: wowza, huge noseful of currant and fermenting fig; malt comes in as backup
T: oh my, what a lovely flavor, everything you expect in an RIS and more--cigars, deeply roasted caramel; hops are a striking presence, lending a great deal of complexity
M: disappointed by the relative watery feel

Wow, this is one of my favorite RISes, up there with Rasputin.

Thanks to jmpizzo for sending me this one!

Pours an opaque black with a 3 inch puffy dark khaki head that fades to a small cap. Thin foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt and milk chocolate candy. Taste is of dark roasted malt, milk chocolate, and slight coffee flavors. A mild roasty bitterness quickly fades after each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Overall, this is a solid RIS all around. I am glad I got to try this one.

12oz bottle, no dating

Pours a thick, ink-black with dark brown head, which slowly dissipates to a tan ring of lacing around the glass.

Sweet, milk-chocolate nose, just like a Hershey bar.

Flavor is heavy on cocoa and vanilla; milk-chocolate sweetness with a hint of dryness toward the finish from the roasted malt.

Thick, creamy body without being overly heavy.

Excellent Imperial Stout. Well-balanced, not too sweet nor too dry with an overabundance of hops or roasted malt.
Definitely the best offering I've had from this brewery.

A nice stout overall. Mostly tastes like a roasty American stout as the alcohol is barely there and it's thinner feeling than most RIS.

Pours nice black with small head but good webs of lacing. Semi tan head. The smell is the best part of this beer, super roasty but it's all covered in a maple sweetness and some dark fruity notes. Also a marshmallow that's toasted comes to mind from the aroma.

The taste is solid with anise notes and coffee roast. A little chocolate powder as well with a dry butter lingering finish. Not super thick but nice over the palate. That licorice anise note is interesting and almost dominates for me. Good carbo.

Overall solid stout but not amazing like so many are these days. Definitely worth a try.

Poured into a tulip. This one pours very dark brown with about a finger of mocha colored head. Good retention and some sticky lace.

Artificial chocolate aromas right up front. Somewhat roasty but mostly just fake sweet chocolate. Sweet chocolate on the pallet with a little bit of an espresso finish. A little bit of a dark fruit flavor to the finish.

The body is medium and the carbonation is soft. Overall not bad but nothing really special here. Seems to be a run of the mill sweeter RIS.

Appearance - Very VERY dark with a beautiful light hazelnut-colored head.

Smell - It smells a little metallic-y at first, but when the head goes away you catch a very roasty smell with hints of chocolate and coffee. The alcohol isn't very noticeable by smell, and you also catch a very light dusting of flowery hops.

Taste - This beer has such a complex taste. It starts off very malty, with some tones of smokey as well. Then you get hit with tones of dark chocolate and coffee, as well as a little nuttiness. Very low tastes of alcohol, and it finishes very chocolately, but still bittersweet.

Mouthfeel - Very low carbonation, it feels thick, yet still smooth.

Overall - I'm a big coffee fan, so I loved this beer. I loved the complexity of the flavors and how it wasn't overly bitter-tasting. I would highly recommend it.

A: Black as the darkest night with a mocha frothy head of foam and brilliant lacing. This is exactly how a great stout should look.

S: Big roasted notes on this one followed by a dark chocolate bar and a slight hint of coffee. The beer smells great!

T: I get some pretty sweet flavors out of here. Of course the chocolate and slight espresso taste, but I also get cherries and vanilla. The alcohol doesn't hide either, you get all of it at once.

M: Full bodied and it seems low carbonated, but I am sure the thickness of the beer hides some of that and its closer to moderate carbonation levels. Its a tad dry, and not oily at all.

D: Sipping beer, 'nuff said.

Jet black with a light brown head. Small head that doesnt last very long.
It smells of light, sweet roasted coffee with a bit of sweet baking chocolate.
Tastes great. Milk chocolate with smooth iced coffee followed by a little bit of sweet dark chocolate. Caramel malt comes through a bit but the chocolate is the dominant flavor.
The carbonation is great, finishes really smooth and silky. Alcohol is barely noticable and there isnt a dry quality on the finish at all. Medium bitterness.

Overall this beer really impressed me. I wasnt expecting it to be such a great tasting Imperial stout with such a fantastic body. Definitley highly recommended.
